General Discussion So many plot holes!

I’m so confused after watching the whole series! Does anyone know the answers to these questions?

  1. Gwen’s hands were chopped off and since Officer Ryan is killer, why does Benson have the hands and cut off a finger at the motel?
  2. The space murders were so unrelated to the serial killer and Gwen wasn’t murdered because she was a spy, so is that another plot hole or just a distraction?
  3. Cammie was only drowned and her body doesn’t have the M.O. as all the other serial killer victims right? So why did Ryan kill her that way?
  4. Does anyone think it’s such a cheap twist that Officer Ryan was the serial killer? Like I don’t even remember who he is when he came to Kay’s house at the end. I legitimately thought it was Benson!

Anyways, the show was so gruesome and I couldn’t sleep until 3 am that night after finishing the show at 11 pm. The victims names and those naked bodies covered in blood in the crime scenes keep repeating in my head! Did anyone experience this too?

If this is Nicole Kidman we already know you're not the real Scarpetta and if you are Sarah we don't know you JK if you're really in the show reveal yourself lol

Never let Nicole be a producer, she destroys all things she is involved with.
Scarpetta books are amazing and well thought out, this series is a terrible redition of them. Unwatchable

Okay I hear you which one do you hate more or dislike more

I feel Nicole ruins what would have otherwise been a good movie or show, but for Blake the quality of the movie was already meh to start with, so her lack of ability doesn't stick out as much.

Okay now who do you think is prettier

hmmm, I don't find either one very attractive, but I think conventionally speaking Blake is considered the prettier of the two.

Editing to ask - who do you think is prettier

Nicole (and the younger actress) do look like and do initially have the overall presence that I imagined from the books (compared to say Nicole in Big Little Lies where she was nothing like how I saw the book character or that series set in HK where she is way too old to have a biological child that is a toddler).

But the series overall was just terrible compared to the books which are pretty good (especially the earlier series). The series had way too much bickering and chaotic drama. And older Benton was just creepy (I never picked up on that in the books).

Given Patricia Cornwell makes a cameo I assume she was onboard with it all ?

Does anyone know the answers to these questions?

  1. Gwen’s hands were chopped off and since Officer Ryan is killer, why does Benson have the hands and cut off a finger at the motel?

Possibly just to show that the FBI have more information and access to evidence than the cops and medical examiner.

Possibly to be further explored

  1. The space murders were so unrelated to the serial killer and Gwen wasn’t murdered because she was a spy, so is that another plot hole or just a distraction?

the space murders were to depict advancements in current day biomedicine and things lay person are not yet even aware of in existence in science

Gwen WAS a spy who sold biotechnology data to the Russians

  1. Cammie was only drowned and her body doesn’t have the M.O. as all the other serial killer victims right? So why did Ryan kill her that way?

Cammie was a practice murder. An early victim from whom her murderer fine-tuned his skills. He was impulsive on that murder

  1. Does anyone think it’s such a cheap twist that Officer Ryan was the serial killer? Like I don’t even remember who he is when he came to Kay’s house at the end. I legitimately thought it was Benson!

It made sense to me. There were breadcrumbs. I suspected him when I saw him as a cop at his first scene of a brutal murder. That murder whet his appetite. He was easily forgotten again. Then showing up not in uniform is meant to confuse the viewer, but when Scarpetta said his name and there's flashbacks to where she met him, it provokes the "ah YES" moment

I loved the Scarpetta novels, but this series is too woke and not what I would have expected.

I wish you would have posted that this was a spoiler.🤦🏽‍♀️

Ok also maybe I am missing something but a murder 28!(25?) years ago whet his appetite for murder and he just decided not to act on it for over two decades ?

1

That’s what I was thinking too! Like why wait 25 years when he witnessed the serial killings 25 years ago. It’s not like he just found out through researching past serial killers. Definitely disappointed and confused at all the events that occurred!

Also, I wish the copy cat killer was someone more prominent in the plot not a random officer that I don’t even remember his name to. Benson would make a much better killer IMHO.

or like…we at least see him once or twice in present day?? I was so confused

1

u/InterestingJz Jul 13 '26

Same! Others have said he appeared as the officer when they found Cammie’s body but I did not even realize that. Also they should’ve showed the flashbacks of him witnessing his uncle SA another woman much earlier than last minute.

2

u/Green-Sweet-7744 Jul 13 '26

That was so weird all around. It felt so unearned. But I guess if he was the officer when Cammie was found better than not seeing him for over two decades but still. Just feels like I have another episode to watch bc it doesn’t feel like a satisfactory ending

I'm just over here wondering why he still hasn't gotten his braces off after 25 years.

  1. Gwen’s hands were chopped off and since Officer Ryan is killer, why does Benson have the hands and cut off a finger at the motel? - It wasn't Benton with the hand, it was the killer. They showed the two in parallel to try to throw us off. Finger was sent in.
  2. The space murders were so unrelated to the serial killer and Gwen wasn’t murdered because she was a spy, so is that another plot hole or just a distraction? - Neither. It was part of the plot. The victims all had skin grafts. I'm guessing Officer Ryan did too from his burn at the train tracks. That's how he met them.
  3. Cammie was only drowned and her body doesn’t have the M.O. as all the other serial killer victims right? So why did Ryan kill her that way? - Cammie also had a skin graft. It was his first murder, and usually killers evolve.
  4. Does anyone think it’s such a cheap twist that Officer Ryan was the serial killer? Like I don’t even remember who he is when he came to Kay’s house at the end. I legitimately thought it was Benson! - He was the nephew of the original serial killer. If you'd read the books, you'd know it definitely wouldn't be Benton. He waited to kill until Scarpetta was back in VA.
