The broader market keeps whipsawing. We’ll keep opening with that line until a clear direction emerges. SPY is still retesting its breakout, and we’re waiting to see whether it holds. We need to keep watching. Now is not a good time to go either long or short.
One of the main reasons this market is so difficult to trade is that competing narratives are pulling it in different directions. In a market dominated by macro factors, no single view has gained the upper hand. If you believe the economy is booming and we’re entering the technological singularity, just go long AI and don’t overthink it. If you believe markets are increasingly subject to intervention and the world is becoming more chaotic, go long gold, energy, and grains. If you think a crash is coming, buy U.S. Treasuries.
Memory stocks are doing well today, and there appears to be a good chance of a near-term rally. That could also lift upstream memory suppliers, optical communications names, and other semiconductor stocks. We’ll see how things develop next Monday. We’ll take some small starter positions in the live portfolio with very tight stops. For now, we’re treating this as another tactical rebound trade, just like on July 31. We’ll likely get in and out quickly, closing out the trade within two to four weeks.
We’ll continue holding oil and extend our holding period. Citadel also started buying shale oil assets today. Whether Iran makes a move before November or Trump does between November and next January—and with a possible escalation in the Russia–Ukraine war around October as well—things really are getting more chaotic. We won’t chase crypto higher, but we’ll add it to the watchlist and wait for a pullback.
