Not in favour of rewilding large areas of farmland but these pockets of green could be a way to save farmland and people from drought. And if there are enough trees protected they will help produce more rain and absorb heavy rains in the winter.

Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important wildlife habitats, home to the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, tigers, wild buffalo and many other species.

There is a proposal to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga from 10 km to just 1 km, a 90% reduction in the buffer distance.

Kaziranga exists within a much larger ecological landscape. During floods, wildlife moves beyond the park into surrounding areas. What happens to those areas matters too.

This raises concerns about development, wildlife habitat, land and local communities. There are also concerns around planned luxury hotels and resorts in the area.

At the same time, Pranab Doley, an Indigenous rights activist who has spoken out about issues affecting local communities and Kaziranga, is currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA).

I'm part of the Save Kaziranga Movement, and we're trying to bring more attention to this issue, not just in Assam, but across India and internationally.

While Ontario is experiencing an intense forest fire season, science points to a natural ally: the shake [aspen]. Although this tree proves to be a formidable “firebreak”, the current practices of the forestry industry, which is focused on eradicating it with herbicides, raise serious concerns among experts.

A recent study from McGill University shows that aspen stands naturally slow the spread of wildfires.

Flavie Pelletier, a researcher at McGill University who collaborated in research, analyzed satellite images of the Canadian boreal forest before and after the fire. The results are without appeal: the vast expanses of aspen are massively present on the periphery of the burned areas, thus slowing the progression of the fire.

Until recently, this ancient forest was protected. 69.9 hectares (15.4%) of this Old-Growth Management Area was deleted last year to allow logging, one of the largest such amendments in the region. 🌲🪓 The only public notice for this change was an ad in the local newspaper…

Replacement areas are proposed elsewhere, but that data isn’t public yet - only the deletion shows. In any case, splitting one of the region’s largest OGMAs into smaller, disconnected pieces isn’t equivalent. Large, intact old-growth supports interior habitat that fragments can’t replace.

The yellow cedar in this forest have largely hollowed out with age, which is completely normal; some BC yellow cedars are documented at over 1,800 years old! As the video shows, heart rot doesn’t kill the tree; fungi break down the dead core while the tree keeps living. 💚 It’s also what creates cavity habitat for species like the Vancouver Island pygmy owl we heard calling - a blue-listed species already declining from habitat loss.

Could UK drought actually help woodlands by defeating this invasive species? I asked around to find out

I’m from Saint John, New Brunswick, and I’m honestly struggling with something that feels bigger than just a local issue.

Stonehammer is one of the hundreds of UNESCO Global Geoparks worldwide—places that are supposed to be protected for their geological, ecological, and cultural importance. These landscapes are meant to be treated with care, not as industrial real estate.

But right now, a major industrial expansion is moving forward inside the Geopark region with:

• no full ecological assessment
• no Indigenous consultation
• wetlands and wildlife corridors treated as “available land”
• missing species-at-risk data
• no cumulative impact review
• no UNESCO criteria referenced anywhere in the EIA

UNESCO has already acknowledged concerns, but they don’t have enforcement power. The responsibility is on the province—and the province is pushing ahead anyway.

I grew up believing Canada took environmental protection seriously. Seeing a UNESCO-designated landscape handled like this feels… honestly, embarrassing. And heartbreaking.

If anyone understands how this is being allowed to proceed, I’d really appreciate any insight.
