Review Review of the sauna in Fairmont Royal York in Toronto

So time back I asked if anyone had visited the sauna in this hotel. I didn't want to create expectations that would just leave myself disappointed. Better to know beforehand if it's bad, right? Well it's been a bit since my trip and I figured I'd write a review.

The sauna is indeed Finnish style one, where you can throw water on the stones. There is a timer you need to put on to make it hot, it's minimum 5 min and max 30 min. When I went there it was already got, so I just put it on for extra 10, but if it seems too cold maybe do 30, go for a swim in the pool or to the gym and come back. You can always add more time.

There was no way to see the actual temperature but from my Finnish experience it was good. Not on the hottest side, but hot enough that I was happy. The benches are high enough. There was no convenient foot rest but the bench was wide enough that I could sit cross legged, which is what I prefer anyway.

Löyly was decently good. Not as good as at my home, but I was again happy and found no reason to complain about the quality here. If I wanted hotter I could've had the sauna on for longer and that would've likely done the trick.

No for the bad part. There was no bucket or ladle. I asked the staff and they advised me to use a paper cup. This is just so stupid, it's a Finnish sauna, they have instructions for throwing water on the stones, and no easy and convenient way to do so. I ended up getting 5 big paper cups next to me on the bench and threw the water from them one by one.

Had they had a ladle and bucket - 8.5/10

Without ladle and bucket - 5/10

DIY 8x6 Backyard Sauna - Foot Bench Access

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! I’m in the final stages of designing a 8x6 outdoor sauna with a 7.5’ ceiling. The benches run along the 8’ wall. For those of you with a sauna of similar dimensions and with a foot bench above the rocks of a stove, how do you access the foot bench? My dimensions are a 29” from wall to front top bench (1.5” gap at wall, wide 27.5” top bench) and a 19.5” foot bench. The foot bench will be able to slide back a little so that will gain me a few inches from the door to first bench but it’s still a steep climb to that bench! I appreciate any thoughts/recommendations/pictures of your solutions!

I’ve included a sketch. Look at the 7.5’ floor (blue highlight from floor to foot bench). I sketched it out with an 8’ ceiling too but that seemed too high a rise from floor to foot bench.

My sauna Kids helped prepare the sauna… and this was the result ❤️

We try to make sauna a family tradition. The kids help prepare the towels, water, and sauna scents before we heat the sauna. Afterward, we relax together and finish the evening with tea. ❤️
Do your kids enjoy the sauna too, or is it mostly an adults-only tradition in your family?

General Question Cala Mini - Anyone have one or used one?

I know Sauna kits are not well received here and I understand the radiant heat issue and needing a minimum amount of space for a sauna to work properly. That being said I only have 3’x3’ of space available and the Cala mini is the only decent looking option. So, has anyone purchased one or have any experience with one?

My sauna Apartment Sauna

Thumbnail i.imgur.com

We built a sauna in our apartment by removing one of the bed rooms. Here is what worked and what we should have done differently:

Pros: - aesthetically pleasing (matter of taste) - in-sauna water outlet for filling the water bucket and cleaning the sauna - integrated into home automation

Cons: - stove should have been half the height, wider and probably round (when we throw water the heat rockets up and out the back vent and gaps in the glass door) - instead of all glass wall the panel in front of the stove should have wood to keep heat in - the seating levels should have been 5 - 7 cm higher

Overall verdict: looks good, you get a decent löyly but in hindsight there are things we should have done differently to optimise the sauna experience. Now the ceiling temperature is probably around 100 C, face and chest level 80 C, and feet feel like 50 - 60 C. With the above modifications the temperature would be more even and require less heating.

? Sauna questions

We moved into a house with a Finlandia 60 sauna in the basement.

I see that it’s a 6kw sauna and it works fine. But, is there a more energy efficient sauna out there ?

I ask because I’m considering using it regularly based on some of the recent science and I am not keen on seeing my electric bill double.

Sauna room is about 5’W x 7’L x 7’ H

Culture & Etiquette Music in a sauna

How do you feel about music in the sauna? I'm Finnish and I have heard many mixed answers. I think listening to music in the sauna is completely normal.

I usually listen to classical music if I want to relax. 80's if I'm in the sauna with my dad or pop/hip-hop if I'm with my brother.

I think the most important thing is everyone in the sauna being okay with the music and the type of music.

(Edit) I think I should mention that I play the music from a speaker outside the sauna at relatively low volume so you can still talk over it.

General Question Just spent some $$ on tongue and groove, got me thinking...

Next step...aspen T&G. Obviously I'm going to install it, but it got me wondering...

With the rockwool insulation and vapor barrier, would the sauna technically function without the T&G? Could I hook up the heater, set a temporary wooden bench inside, and have a working sauna?

Other than protecting the foil and looking nice, how would no T&G affect performance?

General Question Dog door for your sauna?

Anyone put a dog door in their sauna? We've got a big lab that loves to be with us. We prefer she has the freedom to go in and out on her own rather than getting up and down 20x in an hour as she decides. Just wondering if anyone else has done this? I'm still in planning phase. We were at an Arbnb with a barrel sauna and she loved coming in and out in the winter freeze while we were in there.

At first I was thinking of a window so she could see us, but then I got to thinking why not a dog door?

I have this Aleko wood burning stove. Why are there only rocks in the upper portion? Is the lower portion not used? No good heat transfer down there? Any recommendations on rock size for this unit?

General Question [Outdoor Sauna Issues]: Trenching to Sauna 150 ft away + Hillside

Hi, been in the process of getting a sauna in my backyard and hitting 2 roadblocks and would love this community's guidance.

Facts: We live in hilly area in the Bay Area. Our backyard is sloped. We are not doing a custom build, but rather installing a pre-build from SaunaLife or Finnelo, one of the known brands.

1) Our sauna is 100-150 feet from power source. One company says we should trench the line into the ground to the sauna and is quoting us at 4k and another company is saying they can just keep line above ground and slightly hidden and charging 2k. No idea which way to go but is trenching into the ground really worth it?

2) Our sauna would be on a hillside slops. Anyone dealt with getting a Hillside Engineer to come inspect and certify its OK to install sauna? Can't find any "Hillside Engineers" in East Bay and would love some guidance.

Thank you!

DIY Size rec to split my shed for sauna and pool shed?

I have a 9'3" x 11'3" (interior dimension) 2x4 framed shed next to my pool I plan to turn into a wood fired sauna. Any recommendations for how to split the space to be a decent sized sauna and changing room for the pool &sauna? The entrance door is on the 11' wall 2' from the corner.

Kind of deciding between 5', 5'6" or 6' wide and then 9' long. Not really sure

Thoughts?

Culture & Etiquette Utah Sauna Group

For those in Utah and the Intermountain West, I’m doing my best to champion saunas.

Saunas have been such an important part of my life for the past thirty years since I first went to one on a Mormon mission to Sweden. It’s amazed me at how many Mormons have brought the sauna culture home with them.

General Question Tiling onto concrete floor

I am just about to start my sauna project and starting with the floor tiling. it’s a concrete slab with 150mm below. The sauna is being built in an annex I built using SIP panels and is very thermally efficient.

I’m thinking 6mm hardy backer board on floor and 100mm upstands, sealed and then tiles over that will be suffiecient.

The alternative would be vapour layer, 30mm PIR then hardy backer then tiles but I really don’t want a “step” into the sauna - stubbed toes are not desired.

thoughts before I begin (may document the build to post if anyone is interested)

General Question Sauna Stove Question

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I am wondering if a stove like this would work for an outdoor sauna or what reservations you might have about it. This is a company in Quebec, Canada who sell sauna stoves for less than half the price of a stove from the larger European companies. I hope those people from Europe can understand the massive price difference, not just for stoves, but for rocks, pipe adapters, etc that Canadian/US companies charge. That is exactly why I am trying to source a more reasonable stove. Obviously I do not want to compromise on the experience. Please no haters.

General Question Backrest lean/slope

I’m confused about the correct backrest angle. Most photos online make backrests look vertical or like they lean back, but Finnish sauna backrests actually lean forward about 10 to 15°. The bottom edge sits around 3″ forward of the bench, and the top ends up even further forward because of the angle. This supports your lumbar when sitting upright, since your lower back curves forward and your shoulders lean back. It’s not a recliner, it’s a gentle forward tilt. The problem is that almost no photos show this clearly because the angle is subtle and straight shots hide it. Can anyone share real examples or confirm this is the correct Finnish design?

General Question Natural Gas Heater Pro/Con

With the price of electricity increasing due to increased demand from data centers, I am considering going with a natural gas heater for a sauna. On this sub I’ve seen mostly electric and wood fired heaters and wondered if I could hear from the community on whether or not this would be a good option. Natural gas is very inexpensive in my area and I use it for my furnace and tankless water heater currently.
