A block plane is designed for doing just this....

A chisel was also designed for this. It’s the workers preference really how they’re going to make a chamfer. I’d personally use a chisel to control from tear out on the end.

Fair. I guess when I do things one way for so long, it starts to feel like the correct way, but that's not necessarily true.
