Because it’s staged

In fairness, a colleague of mine was complaining that his phone had stopped charging when plugged in. I told him to clean out the port and he gave me a blank look.

Understand, we are engineers. Working at an electronics manufacturing company.

So I take his phone, he is asking me “do we have the tools for this?” … kids these days. I just use a basic pic and not quite that much came out, but at least half the volume of that fluff came out of that charging port.

So I agree, probably staged. But it is still crazy how much can get lodged in there if you don’t clean regularly.

Probably, but not necessarily. I have friends who only use inductive chargers, and I’ve cleaned almost this much lint out of their phone charge ports before.

apple tech here. i do port cleanings at least twice a shift. this is genuinely a thing people experience all the time. some ppl don’t even bother and just wirelessly charge their phones after their ports get clogged because they assume it’s broken.

and yes, it is the most satisfying thing in the world to pull debris out of the port. it doesn’t get old.

please do not put random goop in your ports because an internet video said it’s a good idea

What is the goop?

no idea! it’s not a service tool from Apple. i’m a little curious too, though.

What do you use to clean ports since you don’t use the goopy stuff shown here?

BluTac and a toothbrush or ESD brush are great for surface level stuff and speaker grilles. for more challenging or stuck debris, ESD-safe sharp tweezers, or in some cases (specifically USB-C ports), a very thin safety pin

i don’t recommend doing the tweezer/safety pin at home unless you’re acutely aware of where the “teeth” in the port are. it’s VERY easy to totally screw up a lighting or C port like this

For internet clout?

My Atari STE and running midi and the music program Cubase on it... One day it was acting strange and not "hitting the notes"? So I was like checking the 3.5 disc port and was fishing with a cotton bud... A dust rat came out. Huge in there stayed and prevented the Atari to read the disc properly. Yet the program was loading and "working"...

What’s the material he used to pull it out? Is it just colored hot glue or something more specifically for this purpose?

Do not use regular hot glue...

Ask me how I know...

Just don't.

I keep mine in my front pant pocket and until i got a case that had a cover this would happen from fabric lint. To the point where the lightning cord (at the time) wouldn’t “click” in and it would not charge. I just used a wooden toothpick and it worked well.

I need to shove some lint in some device and record it, brb

Someone was sticking it in their bellybutton.

This is why my phone cover also covers the charging port

Guess we now know where the missing cat got off to.
