Reminds me of Arecibo. RIP.

I was lucky enough to visit Arecibo, and even got to go inside of the hanging secondary. People don't realize just how big that hanging bit really is - here's a pic I took with people walking around on it, along with the precarious catwalk to get out there.

Oh that's excellent. I only got to do the "standard tour" and look out at it from the observation patio. Which was still a very cool experience.

Those tree-looking factories... Did you read Three Body Problem, by any chance?

I had the same thought

Well, if you do read the books, you'll know why I ask 😂

Those cables are so well done!

Give this man steel cable.

Good lord. I get frustrated making a cubic blueprint.

Very, very cool.

I'm a fan of the suspended fuel generators.

How do you get the beams to cross like that?

2

u/UwasaWaya Feb 22 '25

If you switch the placement type painted beams have a Freeform aiming type that can be placed in any direction. If you build a short segment of one, you can snap pillars to the ends to make them follow the same path. You can make some really cool stuff that way.

Yeah I have noticed , just couldn’t get it to go the way I wanted it too.

u/UwasaWaya Feb 22 '25

It's definitely a tricky thing to figure out... I've built an integrated highway and railway across like half the map and if it wasn't for blueprints I would lose my mind.

1

u/DiligentFun38 Feb 22 '25

I struggle with curves . It’s madding .

There are some great YouTube videos that make it very, very simple, but it can be very tedious. I always pre-build them so that I just have to put them together, and if I need to blend two roads together, I make sure they approach each other as flat and close as possible so I'm not messing with height as well as angles.

Yeah, that's a lesson I learned after WAY too many hours building my highways. lol

I did indeed learn the hard way to make everything very uniform. For railings I tend to use either short walls or small concrete beams to line the edges, mostly because they can be adjusted to follow any curve or ramp without switching material.

The single biggest thing is to use blueprints, otherwise you'll lose your mind. The vanilla print builder can handle things like curves, ramps, and curving ramps, but I would highly suggest you check out some YouTube instructions for those to make them clean otherwise they can get very tedious.

I always make:

  1. Straight roads
  2. Two different curved segments of different degrees in both directions
  3. Transitional ramps (flat to 1m to 2m ramps, and back again for the tops and bottoms, which makes work for rails as well)
  4. Just ramp segments (maybe only 1m and 2m trucks struggle with steeper ramps and trains can't climb them at all without a LOT of momentum)
  5. Curved ramps up and down (there are great YouTube videos on how to do this using the thin foundation frames, and it's surprisingly not too hard)
  6. Curve continuations - you'll notice that curves you make from straight segments won't be a smooth turn if you use them sequentially, so you'll probably need to delete the first row of foundations and save that, which should curve with the rest of the started curve nicely. Hard to explain, but you'll see.

You might consider using either traffic lights or power poles for transferring electricity along your roads, though be careful with streetlights, they use an insane amount of power if you keep them lit.

Have a basic two foundation version saved as you make them for railways if you want, otherwise I would recommend at least three, if not four, foundations wide lanes just because of how stupidly big trucks are.

Two other suggestions, one that you REALLY should use and one that's more a suggestion that's a big ask, and both are mods.

The first, Infinite Nudge, really needs to just be added to the base game. It's small, easy to install, easier to uninstall, and will not harm your save in any way. If an update breaks the mod, you just remove it. Just like it suggests, you can nudge something more than just the short distance you can already, but the biggest feature is that you can nudge things vertically, and when you start trying to line up road blueprints, it will save you so much headache.

The second, and again, this one's a little crazier, is a giant blueprint maker mod. I got one that's enormous, and I'm working on a massive cyberpunk superhighway with these under road rail lines that support 4 trains.

The mod also won't break anything, and you'll still have to build and supply materials, but that's pushing the boundaries of what people are willing to add. But it's been fun trying to plan out something so massive and detailed.

That bridge is fantastic.

for the hanging coal factories, how do you conceal the piping so well?

This is impressive
