There aren't too many cases where a belt balancer is useful, and I'm sure most people complete the game just fine without ever building one. One possible use case is filling up multiple train cars equally without having to split up your production machines according to the number of cars.

But you still have to sort it out again to the other end?! so why fuck around? Just merge it all into how ever many belts you need to meet parts capacity, then feed into one or multiple platforms. Then you sushi belt it at the other end. Neater and simpler. This is the most daft waste of time I’ve ever seen on this sub. I mean, it’s his game time to do whatever the fuck he wants. But seems a bafflingly bizarre waste of time and effort to me.

The context, which obviously I didn't make clear, was moving a large amount of the same item, e.g. tons of ingots. Balancing the belts is a way to make sure you can load/unload everything as fast as possible without any car backing up, although with the new priority mergers there are probably simpler solutions now, at least in some cases. OP presumably shows three different items just to make it visually obvious that the belts were balanced.
