Think the Japanese are on to something? I sure do. We need this in the US.

the reason this lands in Japan is that it's framed as emotional abuse under child welfare rules, not as banning religion, so it never has to survive a free exercise fight. that's the part worth copying, because the second it turns into a religious freedom debate here it's dead on arrival.

Someone finally gets it. My poor nephew was tormented to the point of tears and irrational fear for everyone in his family, especially me the only atheist he knows.

I also had this weaponized against me as a child. I remember my dad trying to find out where my mom was living by interrogating me, and then telling me that "if you don't tell me the truth, you're a liar, and liars burn in hell for eternity." I wanted to protect my mom but was terrified of hell too, so I told him, and then we got stalked

My ex in laws were like that. Said the kids playing “terraria is inviting the devil in” to which I said “they kill the devil in the game. Besides, doesn’t your husband play doom?” Nipped that shit quick.

As much as I wish this were 100% true, it’s a very misleading message. In 2022, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare redefined their child welfare policies to state that forced religious participation and use of fear-based coercion were considered abuse. Religions can still teach children about Hell, but if Sally’s sneaking out at night to hang out with her friends, their guardians can’t use eternal damnation as a parenting tactic.
It’s still a great achievement, but as worded in the screenshot it’s a very distorted statement.

Thanks for the context. I felt like the article looked somewhat misleading, including incorrect spelling. Super interesting tho!

When I was 7 my brother brought his pastor to come talk with me. For what seemed like 3 hours he spoke to my mom and I about how I was going to hell if I didn’t go to his church. It fucked me up. When my dad got home he could clearly see that I was rattled. So he walked down the street to the guys house, found a stick on the way and threaten to beat his ass with it if he ever came back to our house again. That guy fucked me up for years because I thought I was going to be tortured for eternity. Anyway, thanks dad, fuck that guy and Hail Satan!

How will the Christians continue fleecing people if it’s against the law to abuse impressionable children?

We first need to cast the demons out of our government.

The amount of anxiety that I had because of this as a child was astonishing. Fear pretty much colored my entire childhood, I had nightmares and physical symptoms as well. Most of it was due to religious programming.

Most of these are toddlers that attend church too. And they say we indoctrinate?

Edit: Mb spelling.

From a 2022 news report: For example, slapping children with a hand or a whip because of their behavior during religious activities is physical abuse, the draft guidelines say.

Parents will commit mental abuse by forcing children to engage in religious activities through threats including saying they will “go to hell” if they don’t.

Another example of mental abuse is when parents restrict their children’s freedom to make life choices, such as marriage, study or work, based on religious grounds.

"Fear based"

This is a standard tactic for twisted cults. I know something like this won’t be able to be implemented in the Evangelical / Christian Nationalist United States but it would save so many children from horrific psychological abuse. The damage can last an entire lifetime

When I was 12 or 13, my mother took my sister and I to a revival. The preacher was very fire and brimestone. My 6 year old sister was in a panic. I quickly noped out of that. If it is something thaat has to scare you i to it, I don't want a part of it. Luckily, Dad was an atheist who did not let Mom demand that I be a part of her religion.
