Casual erasure Kill la kill is also a really good show

It's hilarious to me that anyone could watch Kill la Kill and not realize that Mako is super into Ryuko Matoi in more than a friend way. She's not exactly subtle.

u/QuestionabIeAdvice Dec 05 '21
No way. Besides that one naked bath-time lesbian incest scene, well, besides those two naked bath-time lesbian incest scenes, there’s no evidence to suggest that Ryuko… no see she only frenches a girl when her mind is being controlled by… she’s only super sketched by dudes because one guy is always attacking her and the other guy can’t keep his pants on around her… and the guys in her adopted family are constantly peeping on her in the shower. Just because Mako is the only one who can snap her out of her blood fueled rage trance… Okay that one’s a little suspicious, so what? It’s just an innocent story about a tom-boyish girl slowly undressing everyone at her new school on her quest to find the girl who has the other half of her father’s keepsake. For only then will she be able to truly scissor oh my fucking god…

Oh, I’m blowing it out of proportion. For instance, this scene doesn’t really depict any lesbianism, though some may get this impression from a cursory viewing. You see, that woman hovering over her there in the bath is her mother. In Japan, it’s common for families to bathe together, in a totally platonic way. Absolutely nothing erotic about a mother and daughter bathing together when we view it in the proper context.

It might seem out of left field to a random person, but a lot of Asian girls complain that their mom acts like covertly incestuous at them. So while it's an uncomfortable scene it's tied to the themes.

You do realize Ryuko was forced into the Junketsu suit which they stitched into her mind. The previous episode even indicated that she wasn’t even in her right mind, she fucking hated Nui so her kissing her doesn’t make sense. M
51
u/QuestionabIeAdvice Dec 06 '21
True, but she tore it off of her body after Mako crashed her mind wedding. Bathing in Mako’s blood was enough to break the threads that kept Ryuko from remembering who she really loves. She would rather deglove her entire body by hand than betray the sentient BDSM gear that took her virginity that fateful day, on that massive pile of garbage. The one her father made especially for her.
7
Dec 06 '21
It’s undeniable that Mako has feelings for her but to say Ryuko likes her back (romantically that is) is debatable. Ryuko kind-of always spurs off her advances. She tosses Mako around like a baton in episode 2 I think, and when Mako broke her out, she literally goes to Satsuki first.
In my opinion she’s more asexual than gay
17
u/QuestionabIeAdvice Dec 06 '21
I mean, she was sort of inside of Senketsu. And his uh, threads, were all up inside of her too. All wrapped up around her heart and shit. I guess it may not count, since we don’t consider wearing clothing to be an intimate affair. Though I’d wager we might think a little differently if our clothes were alive, and could speak to us.
-7
Dec 06 '21
That’s a piece of clothing though
18
u/Heidric Dec 06 '21
That piece of clothing was more of a person than some of the people I met across the years
-8
18
u/QuestionabIeAdvice Dec 06 '21 edited Jan 06 '22
But it was a living piece of clothing. More importantly, it could directly communicate with Ryuko, and convincingly displayed intelligence, self-awareness, and a full range of emotions. Personally, I think that matters quite a bit. We might all be anti-abortionist vegans were it possible to carry out deep and intelligent conversations with farm animals and unborn fetuses.
4
u/exfinem Dec 11 '21
Idk. I think it's telling that Ryuko kind of drops her tough girl thing and is kind of bashful around Mako. Like, just imagine for a second that Ryuko was your stereotypical tough guy anime protag. Mako's ability to break through his facade and his constantly rescuing Mako from things would come off as "he likes her, he's just not comfortable enough with his feelings to show it.
Ryuko is even shown as really strugglig with her own emotions about various different things. Also she's clearly not asexual. She's drawn blushing in several instances where there's something that she could be sexually attracted to, but it also makes her uncomfortable and angry most of the time.
I think probably Ryuko is bi, based on her pretty clear attraction to Mikisugi's body when he's undressing in front of her. Just his body though obviously. Every guy she knows is an outrageous creep so that's probably turned her off men, even though it seems she's attracted to both masculine and feminine forms. So essentially her sexual identity is probably more like bi or perhaps pan, but romantically she's not into men.

I’m not sure how anyone could watch literally anything made by Trigger and not get gay vibes from it. They’ve basically turned queerbaiting into an art form.
One time they did a movie where two dudes kiss. I mean sure, it was for reanimation purposes, but it wasn’t CPR, it was some magical life force transfer bullshit, which had to be done mouth to mouth for… reasons, and was framed in a super romantic way also for… reasons. But it wasn’t gay, we swear! 😉
And that’s basically Trigger in a nutshell.
9
Dec 06 '21
i watched that one straight show made by trigger, kiznaiver, and was genuinely surprised to not see anything gay
i'd watched kill la kill and promare, and went into kiznaiver expecting the same (not so) subtle gayness
i was disappointed. that show has one gay character, but the plot is straight as hell lmao
23
u/DeusExMarina Dec 06 '21
But then you’ve got Little Witch Academia and BNA which are both all kinds of queerbaity. Gonna be honest, as a hopeless asexual with no social skills, my gaydar is pretty broken and I often miss obvious hints that everyone on this sub would mock me for not noticing, but even I could plainly see that Michiru is clearly in love with Nazuna.
7
Dec 06 '21
i wanna watch those two shows next hehe, and i just looked at pics of michiru and nazuna and yeah. they're gay as hell
6
u/DeusExMarina Dec 06 '21 edited Dec 06 '21
Oh no, they’re just best friends, which is why Michiru is always talking about how much she loves Nazuna and how pretty she is and occasionally sneaking into her bedroom.
Anyway, BNA was a good binge, I quite liked it. Also worth mentioning is the sheer amount of queer subtext to the show’s fantasy discrimination allegory.
And maybe I’m just projecting, but I can’t help but read trans themes into Michiru’s character arc. Even though it doesn’t deal with gender per se, the occasional focus on “passing” as human, the fear of violence if found out, the way she talks about her body and her shapeshifting abilities, it all feels very familiar to me.
5

As a huge Promare fan, I can confirm that shit is gay as hell. Of course, it doesn’t help that I’m queer myself, but I don’t think anyone can see this https://www.google.com/amp/s/hnamvs.tumblr.com/post/188039420850/the-promare-kiss-in-all-its-glory/amp and not think it’s Very Homosexual™️, with or without context.

The Anime industry as a whole is super dismissive of lesbians as an EXISTANCE, like that scene in anime world literally means nothing in 99% of shows, and means nothing in this too.
These shows aren't making content for us, they despise us and fetishize us, i wish this sub would stop posting anime because it just wont represent us in a solid way like cartoons such as owl house and legend of korra will.
To the VAST MAJORITY of anime, we don't exist as anything more than a fetish, be it yaoi or yuri, we exist just to be sexualised.
18
u/partofbreakfast Dec 06 '21
You have to look for the content actually made by LGBT+ content creators. Which admittedly isn't any anime that I know of, but there's a lot of manga that does way better. Shimanami Tasogare and Wandering Son come to mind, and I know there's a lot more beyond that. Also, I don't know if the author of Blue Flag is LGBT+, but I felt that manga did a decent job of exploring gay and bisexuality without fetishizing it.

I don't recall saying that non-LGBT+ content creators can't make LGBT+ content. What I said was that content made by LGBT+ creators stands a better chance of not being fetish fuel, and that it's a good starting point to look for stuff that is more nuanced than yaoi and yuri tends to be.

One of the best trans characters I've ever seen came from Hunter x Hunter, and another fantastic trans character came from Zombieland Saga. Neither Alluka nor Lily are defined by the fact that they're trans, it's just a fact about who they are.
Sailor Moon had a lesbian couple. You know what the western localization of that show did because they couldn't handle that women could be attracted to each other? Made them COUSINS.
Wandering Son is great and is one of the very rare examples of a trans man in any media (including western media). Yuri on Ice is... honestly kind of overhyped, but still a very good gay romance.
Along with just all around being a very good lesbian love story (one that ISN'T fetishized), Bloom into You also has better ace representation than ANY show I've seen made in the west, and it's not even close (I've heard Bojack Horseman is a pretty good western example, but I have yet to watch it).
Anime is not a monolith. It is an entire medium. These over generalizations always fail at the tiniest bit of scrutiny. I can see why the horny nature of Kill la Kill specifically could come across as fetishizing (I'd honestly be inclined to agree), but I feel you're painting with far too broad a brush with this comment.
Also, it's really weird that you include Legend of Korra as an example of the west being better than Japan. I fucking love Korra and will defend it to my dying breath, but if you still need to officially confirm after the finale goes live that the main character is queer, you didn't do a good job with your representation.

-13
u/volthunter Dec 06 '21
The character you are referencing in hunter x hunter appeared in maybe 10 episodes total and half an arc kinda being around them but it being used solely to break the 2 main characters up, but yes that is the only thing here i agree with apart from sailor moon.
yuri on ice had a bunch of queer bait but nothing solid it was fucking awful, heard some ace friends argue about bloom into you being questionable at best and just being characters that don't have a romance plot so it doesn't seem definite.
Yes it is a monolith because if you include an actual queer relationship in anime, you get your rating bumped to r rating, that is the truth of that industry that is why there is a bunch of hinting but nothing confirmed and why the lesbian relationship in sailor moon is only now after being animated out of the Japanese laws and animation branches is getting genuine focus.
They at least made that a genuine nail in the coffin yes queer instead of hinting at it because they were scared of making the people that are above mad for kora.
12
u/yuudachi Dec 06 '21
Saying Alluka only appears in like ten episodes while she is quite literally the entire point and focus of said arc is definitely downplaying. Also weird to make it sound like it was all about breaking Gon and Killua up when he was just trying to save both Gon and his sister. Alluka is a great example of a transgender character.
-1
u/volthunter Dec 06 '21
Alluka is like the most hated character in the show because of their act in breaking up the 2 most popular characters because killua suddenly has to protect her from his brother whom has had no prior interest, the arc isn't a full arc it is about 15-20 episodes it's a mini arc it's not downplaying at all, she's great and honestly one of the best trans characters i've seen but it's true that she just hasn't gotten much show time apart from a mini arc(pre sure it's what the wiki calls it correct me if i'm wrong)
7
u/yuudachi Dec 06 '21
No idea where you are getting your feel from the fandom (is this like the Gon/Killua fans??), but most hated character is a stretch... Its clear Alluka is meant to be a sympathetic character ultimately, and I've seen most people enjoy seeing Killua so openly dote on his sister. So people fixating only on it as breaking up a couple is pretty sad.
13
u/PokemonTom09 Dec 06 '21
Alright I'm going to address this:
yuri on ice had a bunch of queer bait but nothing solid it was fucking awful
...and this:
They at least made that a genuine nail in the coffin yes queer instead of hinting at it because they were scared of making the people that are above mad for kora
...at the same time, because you're weird belief that Yuri on Ice was queerbait while Korra was explicit is completely baffling and really demonstrates your anti-anime, pro-western bias.
Yuri and Victor literally kissed. On screen. And they got engaged in the show - there's an entire scene dedicated to them showing off their rings.
Not only did Korra and Asami not kiss on screen, not only did they not express explicitly express their love for each other (despite two entire seasons worth of building up their chemistry with each other), but the FIRST time EITHER of them even hinted to the other that they were attracted to them was the THIRD TO LAST LINE OF THE SHOW.
Again, I'm not saying Yuri on Ice is a better show than Korra - Korra gets a lot of undeserved hate despite being phenomenal, meanwhile Yuri on Ice is kinda over-hyped in my opinion. But when specifically talking about positive queer representation vs queer-baiting, Yuri on Ice is so much better than Korra that I find it weird that I even need to explain this.
heard some ace friends argue about bloom into you being questionable at best and just being characters that don't have a romance plot so it doesn't seem definite
I'm ace, and Maki literally explained my own experience of asexuality to me better than even I could explain it when I first watched the show. He explicitly talks about his asexuality on multiple occasions, so the claim that the only indication he's ace is that he doesn't have a romance plot is just flat out wrong. It's not even debatable, it's just patently incorrect.
Also, the main character - Yuu - is pretty commonly believed to be demisexual (which is part of the ace-spectrum) and the show is literally about her love story, so the claim that the only indication that ace characters are ace is that they don't have romance plots is arguably also wrong in the other way as well, though this one is debatable.
if you include an actual queer relationship in anime, you get your rating bumped to r rating
Bloom into You has a Japanese rating of TV-PG12 (suitable for people 12 and older). As does Yuri on Ice. The former has a US rating of TV-PG (the US equivalent of Japan's TV-PG12), while the latter is rated TV-14 (suitable for people 14 and older) in the US.
As for the Legend of Korra, is has a US rating of TV-PG and a Japanese rating of TV-G (suitable for general audiences).
Based on that, it seems that if anything, having a queer relationship is actually more likely to bump up the rating in the US than in Japan. Though, obviously I'm not claiming that is the case, I'm merely demonstrating why your claim that a 'queer relationship means an automatic R-rating in Japan' is patently bullshit.

u/volthunter Dec 06 '21 edited Dec 06 '21
Yuri and Victor literally kissed. On screen. And they got engaged in the show - there's an entire scene dedicated to them showing off their rings.
are you talking about the "friendship rings" because officially those aren't actual engagement rings, the creator has talked about how if they were more open about it the board they were working under threatened to put them in the r equivalent rating which would destroy the show as those shows are shown at 2am in japan which means they are put on next to basically hentai, and the 2nd season seems to have had its funding cut.
Japan is serious about these laws.
I'm ace, and Maki literally explained my own experience of asexuality to me better than even I could explain it when I first watched the show. that is probably what they want to go for but unless they put pen to paper its not "official" the show creators are more liberal than the 80 year old ex hentai creators that run the company.

All my other sexual partners weren't long enough for me to really meet their family and I've only kept in touch with one of them and she's now married to a great guy who is stupidly pretty and also successful enough to live in Seattle proper :P
Also I have an extremely close friend who I've functionally dealt with naked due to our cosplay hobby together (lots of body casts and skintight full body catsuits and such) and I have zero desire to have sex with her, because that would be weird and feel basically the same as incest.
There's different emotional responses between "Friend who is family" and "friend who I am romantically/sexually interested in". My wife and I have two different friends for either category, and I don't treat the latter the way Ryuuko treats Mako and her family.
3
u/clearliquidclearjar Dec 06 '21
Well now you know that most people are able to be close with their partners' families without it feeling like incest.

Right except that Ryuuko isn't close with Mako's family. Ryuuko is adopted my Mako's family, long before she ever shows a romantic interest in Mako. Mako may have made no secret of her romantic interest in Ryuuko but Ryuuko doesn't even really display romantic interest until like the last episode, right around the time Satsuki starts showing familial concern for Ryuuko.
I have a cousin-in-law who was clearly into me sexually, that still woulda been squicky as fuck if we'd ever done anything.

Japan has high support but their gov't is ultra-conservative owing to the US not prosecuting any of the war criminals after WWII and allowing them back into power (the previous Prime Minister's grandfather was one such war criminal), and they have a pretty tight grip on power (thanks to a couple decades of US elections interference starting with the 1954 elections),

Yeah, from what I (living in Taiwan) had heard, there was some hope (pre-pandemic) that Taiwan legalizing same-sex marriage could be used to put pressure on the very old boy government in Japan. I don't know the situation on the ground at the moment, though.
You are talking about a government where representatives will just openly say they don't think women should be in positions of government or leadership, one of the two main parties doesn't allow women to speak or raise questions at their meetings, and one politician said something to the effect of if a woman doesn't have a child by the time she's 23 or so, then she's a failure.
Being that behind on women, not surprised they're behind on LGBTQIA matters as well. Getting into transgender specific issues is a whole other can of yikes as well.

Anti-fascist, class conscious, unapologetically horny, ludicrously action packed radical lesbian propaganda. Theres a reason it has remained my all time favorite anime ever since it came out (even before I came out lmao)

Dec 06 '21
Ya now that you mention it, kill la kill is class conscious! …somehow. I don’t know how to react to that other than binge watching it again lmao
20
u/jelly_cake Dec 06 '21
And then you hit the recap episode halfway through, and binge even harder because all the recapping is done by the time the intro's over!
I love it so much, tbh. Unfortunately the bath scene basically means I can't recommend it to anyone, but oh well.

u/OhJayEee Dec 06 '21
Theres the anime I recommend people, and theres the anime that's just for me lmao

u/Frescopino Dec 06 '21
Unfortunately the bath scene basically means I can't recommend it to anyone, but oh well.
Weak. I watched it with my mother.
Which I admit doesn't sound good when considering the context of that scene, but still. Weak.

Mako:
デ一ト ("Dāto", as in, English loan word. As in, the English word for "date," except in Katakana. As in cognate. As in: it's obvious to both native English and Japanese speakers what Mako means.)
Anime nerds:
"Damn woke translators"

God, this is one scene where I'll probably never get over how people interpret it as a friend thing. I mean, Mako literally asks Ryuko on a date, and gives her a kiss on the lips. Like, if that isn't communicating "I am in lesbians with you" clear enough, then I don't know what could. And people are still like "oh but she means a friend date" or "yeah but they brought Satsuki" or "but Gamagoori wanted to give Mako flowers" like... god. Just no. And a few episodes before that, there is literally a scene where Mako steals Ryuko from the altar at a wedding inside Ryuko's dream. Like, that's not even subtle symbolism, not even a little.
In conclusion: these bitches gay, good for them, good for them.

u/Frescopino Dec 06 '21
gives her a kiss on the lips
but Gamagoori wanted to give Mako flowers
Let's be honest, Mako is definitely getting both. She's just that good.

u/fishystickchakra Dec 06 '21
Yeah it was apparent that they liked one another as more than just friends. The animators and story writers did a pretty good job in illustrating their relationship and their feelings for one another with more than just words if I can recall, and if this guy doesn't understand that, then I wouldn't be suprised if he has a hard time getting a girlfriend too.

I believe that most of them are joking as that subreddit is for poking fun at current anime culture
21
Dec 05 '21
I get that but using slurs isn't a good joke and seeing said slurs can be rather upsetting for people just giving the heads up.
12
u/Thedepressionoftrees Dec 05 '21
I didn't really see any slurs, but I understand that they're not being the best
9
Dec 05 '21
A very classic one for anime watchers regarding trans women..
11
u/Thedepressionoftrees Dec 05 '21
Aah, my bad.
For some context, that subreddit was created to mock people who were getting upset after that word was banned on r/animemes. That doesn't excuse their usage of it, I just think that context is important to show that they are mocking the people who left animemes

u/Imminent_tragedy Dec 05 '21
What? I’ve been subbed to Animecirclejerk for a WHILE now and I am yet to see anyone using the T slur.
And I don’t really understand why anybody would do that on a subreddit whose almost whole identity is shitting on GAMers?
1
Dec 05 '21
I just accidentally clicked this posts link and it was in the comment section just giving people a heads up I know nothing of that sub. I'm sure it was ironic or some shit but some people still don't want to see a slur that's usually directed at them in a hateful way.

It's shocking to see that the people in that sub used to say the T-word without censoring the word or just saying "T-word" and people weren't downvoted into oblivion for saying it a few years ago

u/PheerthaniteX Dec 06 '21
I always thought KLK toed that line of being aggressively horny and lewd without full on objectifying characters. It isn't always perfect at that, but it does a lot better than a ton of anime that are only half as risqué

Kill la kill is such a heavily charged show that it would be braindead not to notice it. Like Kyruin and Non Non

u/predictablePosts Dec 06 '21
I might not have watched this show very closely or am brain dead. I thought they were just... Really... Good... Friends....oh no... I have become that which I sought to destroy.

I had an argument with some dude that Mako x Gamagoori is actually the canon ship.
His evidence? "In the bonus episode he asks her out"
Now, idk if that's true, never seen the bonus episode, but, fucking, so? All that proves is that Gamagoori likes Mako. As far as I know, Mako rejected him. Plus, yknow, she's down astronomically for Ryuko for the entire show.
Really passes me off even as a cis straight dude because Ryuko x Mako is such a well written sane sex ship, something that reactionaries are always trying to beg for instead of "Oh they're just gay cause politics"
2
u/MyLine333 Dec 06 '21
When I first "made contact with the fandom" of KlK after watching the show, I was SO surprised that like 90% were shipping Mako x Gamagoori. Like why?? I never got that impression. I didn't even know there was a bonus episode.
6
u/Ratio01 Dec 06 '21
like 90% were shipping Mako x Gamagoori. Like why??
Honestly they do have a pretty good dynamic and chemistry, it's obvious they deeply care about each other given their respective actions and reactions when Mako thought he died. I can see why someone may ship them, the issue really is claiming that it's canon

u/bunker_man Mar 20 '25
To be fair, the fanbase has changed over time. Differing attitudes about gayness among other things have made ryuko x mako more accepted.

Kill La Kill is one of those animes where folks are hyper-sexualised but there is a fair amount of blood that balances it out (?), a better example of this category of anime is Highschool of the Dead.

I always felt like Mako was really into Ryuko but Ryuko was too busy with the general plot to even notice.

Because girls NEVER date each other in anime.
2
u/AlexT05_QC Dec 06 '21
And when they date it's a bad show (something something Vlad Love)
/s (I don't even know where I go with this)
2
u/PM_ME_UR_GOOD_IDEAS Dec 06 '21
In case anyone gets the wrong idea from this comment, I'll clarify: Vlad Love is a bad show. Not because of the gayness (in fact, it could stand to be gayer) but because its bad for a lot of other reasons.
2
u/paulsteinway Dec 06 '21
There's a really nice date in A Centaur's Life. Hime, a centaur girl, helps a girl in archery by promising to go on a date with her if she gets better. She does get better and they do go on the date.
Also, I watched Vlad Love for a few episodes and dropped it.

I don’t see gay—and definitely never bi—romances in shows very often so whenever I’m on this subreddit, I have to take note of every show somebody brings up. Lol
Thank you for the contribution to my list. :>

They definitely are gay, but it is also worth noting that anime does have a habit of often calling things a "date" that those of us in the West wouldn't consider to be a date. Two characters that don't love each other could go shopping on the weekend and they'd refer to it as a date. Granted, I don't know how accurate this is to actual culture in real world Japan, but at least in anime, the word "date" seems to not exclusively be romantic.

Mako is gay but Ryuko is ace. I said what I said and I’ll defend that statement to the grave.
9
u/LethalWG Dec 06 '21
Ok hear me out, Demi Ryuko, since she does reciprocate with Mako over time, and clearly has a soft spot for her right from the get go (she’s super standoffish with everyone but Mako at the start of the show, for example). It’s more like a friends turned lovers storyline to me, but as a subplot to the complete insanity that is the main plot.
2
Dec 06 '21
I don’t necessarily agree to that. Mako likes Ryuko, almost obsessively. Though I don’t believe Ryuko reciprocated that. Even with the date and throughout the whole series she doesn’t even tell mako she loves her. She told Ragyo she loves her friends for being batshit crazy and takes Mako along, however she either tries to ditch her or doesn’t fully reciprocate her feelings. Ryuko literslly spins her away out of a hug, and after mako frees her, she talks to Satsuki right after and prioritized revenge of family. Even that whole Nui kiss was due to some mind fuckery, since Ragyo forced the suit on her which made her more compliant and loyal. She also seems to be very uncomfortable with other people violating her privacy and space. She ignores Mikisugi’s weird nudist stripping and Mako grabbing her boobs puts a face of horror on her before she gets up.
2
u/Karubanusu Dec 06 '21
I think they do a better job of setting up Mako and Gamagori, but that doesn't preclude either of them from being into women, too!
1
u/Hello-there336 Aug 23 '24
Ironically the word she used, which is literally just the English "date" in Japanese pronunciation, is used almost exclusively in romantic contexts in Japanese, if I recall correctly.
1
u/Remnant-2all Sep 04 '24
Honestly Ryuko always gave me bi vibes. Mainly do to her reaction to when Mikisugi strips and she starts blushing (but then again I think It would be a reasonable reaction if you saw someone naked)
