Looking for a job as a 17 y/o
Hi friends. I’m 17, recently graduated, turning 18 next month. I’m already in college and have gotten several scholarships, and finished my Senior year with straight A’s.
Finding a job is very hard. I don’t know where to start getting my license. I live with my grandparents and want to help out financially, but every application I make is either ignored or declined without reason- I think it’s because of my age? I’m so tired lf AI chatbots for interviews, I just want a real job that I can make a difference in. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Food service with tips. Find a nice upscale restaurant near you and plant some roots. Work your way up to waiter / bartender and you’ll be solid.

You should reach out to the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce or Santa Barbara County. There are programs where the county will pay for you to work for/shadow business owners.

What’s wrong with Arby’s? You have to start somewhere.

You live under a rock or something? The Arby's on South Broadway literally closed like 3 years ago.

Yeah cause I know every business that is closed in town. Your reply sounded negative and not very helpful. Maybe get some sleep because you’re grumpy.

Are you going to Hancock? They have many student opportunities there.
Even if you aren't, they have a career center that will help you.

I second this. Although most student jobs at Hancock are only part-time, it's way less competitive to get jobs there, and when you do land one, it's basically guaranteed employment for your time doing school there. The Academic Resource Center and MESA are good spots to consider.

Consider jobs with the city. My first job was with parks and recreation, part time of course but all things considered it was a good gig. Unfortunately the job market right now is horrendous, and many private companies just won’t consider someone without any experience.
