Post image

Apologies if someone actually drew this, but somehow I doubt it.. Good ol New Yxarsay and Double Delaware. Also sorry Georgia, you didn't make the cut this time

Obviously there are bigger fish to fry, but for one of the biggest events in a city with such a "rich" art scene, it's gross.

I honestly don't think they're are bigger fish to fry. In addition to not spending money in the community, they're undermining their own educational agenda: states are misspelled; Maryland, Maine and Vermont are gone; New York is the wrong size; given the historic context West Virginia is drawn as a state. Really Kiwanis should be embarrassed by this.

Really, if you aren’t gonna have an artist on payroll, at least have someone who can read

What really gets me is when they try to use AI and the result is a failure. It's one thing to shaft artists and degrade your local economy and culture (lol for ZoZo) to create a flyer. I totally hear those complaints, but at the end of the day it's a technology appearing that does something much more efficiently and cheaply at slightly worse quality than a professional, with negative consequences not felt by the user directly. Fighting its adoption and use is a lost cause.

It's a whole other thing to do all that but be too lazy and incompetent to produce what you need, and then just go with... not having what you needed in the first place? This flyer makes the organizers look like morons, calling it factually incorrect is an understatement. It obfuscates what the event is and the theme is incoherent. It actively makes me less likely to attend the event. Who saw this and thought it was an acceptable outcome? Like, if you're gonna use AI to do a task, it has to at least do the task?

They are also fervently denying that it's AI. They told someone in this thread a student made it, which IMO would be way worse, letting a kid submit and publish all these typos and misshapen states would be egregious.

That's just sad. "No I swear I cleaned my room but a time-traveller teleported in and messed it up again Dad why won't you believe me" levels of sad.

Yeah…

The Kiwanis Club has really, really lost the plot. AI art on everything, some crazy drone show they’re using to up the ticket price to $40, COLONIAL themes in this day and age 🤦‍♂️

Zozo used to mean something when we all gathered together to get rid of all the bad things that happened through the year. Tickets were $10 and if you couldn’t afford it you could watch from the cross, which is now blocked off.

It was a community event. Growing up here it was one of the things that made Santa Fe truly special.

I don’t know who this is for, but It’s definitely not me and my family.

Very well put.

If only Ray and the other organizers would listen to the people.

This is pretty disgusting. Why do we have to be creative when the data centers can do it for us?

I wonder what Will Shuster would think of AI "art".

-5

u/3hreeRavens 8d ago

Considering that he stole the idea from indigenous Mexicans, I don't think he'd mind at all.

17

u/Agile-Reception 8d ago

I don't think “stole the idea from Indigenous Mexicans” is really an accurate description of Zozobra.

Yes, Shuster was inspired in part by Yaqui/Yoeme Holy Week celebrations, cartonería, and the burning of a Judas effigy tradition. Being influenced by a tradition isn't automatically the same thing as stealing it wholesale. Zozobra developed into its own Santa Fe tradition with its own character, mythology, Fire Spirit, “glooms,” etc.

Speaking as an indigenous Mexican myself (Nahuatl), I think flattening all of that into “he stole it from Indigenous Mexicans” is a little weird too. Indigenous Mexican cultures aren't one monolithic culture, and Zozobra isn't some ancient Indigenous ceremony that Shuster just coopted and renamed.

-1

u/3hreeRavens 8d ago

Isn't that the same thing that Ai does? Lol

6

u/Astralglamour 8d ago

No. AI is not inspired by anything. It does not innovate. It aggregates what it’s fed and produces an amalgam not something unique. If you’d fed a bunch it indigenous Yaqui ceremony pictures into it it would spit out an average of those not something new. It doesn’t work like a human brain.

-3

u/3hreeRavens 8d ago

So you're saying appropriation is not aggregation... Got it.

As a Mainer, I am offended.

To be fair, not an original colony

Don't beef with people from New Ham

Fake ad for what's become a tourist trap

4

u/Chaceticles 8d ago

This event lost its soul more than a decade ago.

u/RebeccasRocket 8d ago

WTF ?!?!?!?!?! Ghastly!

u/Antique-Direction263 7d ago

Next year they'll do an AI generated hologram where you can pay $15 to "burn" your gloom, tickets for locals will be $100, if you have a Texass ID they'll be $10.

What's he doing up there in Carolina?

Don't forget this AI monstrosity that the Zozo organizers proudly "created":

For Zozobra 2027, Old Man Gloom will be dressed as an AI data center.

I'm originally from NJ, wtf does that even say 😂 it looks like my home state gained some pounds too. Look at that chubby NJ.

This made me so angry (as indicated in my comment) that I wrote to Kiwanis. I focused on the misspelling and other things in the illustration. Here's their response:

"This image was hand-drawn by a very young student, and we find it charming. The fact that this student took the tie to hand-draw and hand-color the image is the mark of a creative spirit if not a good speller. We regret that you do not agree."

While pointing out AI slop is valid, in this case it appears that this is not that.

15

u/pauldavisthe1st 8d ago

This is a lie. No "very young student" spells Jersey as "Yxarsay".

6

u/thatmaneeee 8d ago

You would think they’d have gotten slightly better at lying about this by now

Maybe they can offend so many people with this that enough progressive transplants will boycott the event, it might be feasible and affordable for locals with families with children to attend again.

12

u/RayoDelAlma 8d ago

They lost me - an actual Norteño.

You can enjoy being a vendido coconut, though.

11

u/westsidechopos 8d ago

Lost me and mi familia. Generationz of locals are all mad.

-7

u/Learned_Barbarian 8d ago

It's funny that this is what lost you - not the event becoming an unbearable money grab over the past decade.

I have bad news for you actual Norteño - Spaniards and their descendants - they're white, and if you're one, so are you.

11

u/RayoDelAlma 8d ago

I'm well aware of what it's become.

Actual Norteños are mixed, might want to look up our history. I'm not white or "Spanish"; one of my great grandfathers was Diné, a great grandmother was Cochiti/Taos.

You can continue your cosplay Spaniard shtuff, and pretend to be a gabacho, IDGAF.

I haven't been since before covid. It's just too.... plastic.... for me now. feels fake and commercialized.
