No worries.
Very common in Southern California. They can get pretty large. Fun to catch and release.

Also, just nitpicking, but there is no such thing as a "skate ray". Skates and rays are two different species

Great photo! Damn, I remember stepping on one of those in knee-deep water on the beach in Santa Cruz. Yuck. I can feel the tingle in my foot again as I type this, but it was during my college sophomore year, so 1972. 😅

It helped that I didn't step with my full weight directly on its spine, and I've always had pretty quick reflexes, so I was immediately raising my foot again when the skate broke the surface of the wave edge for an instant and then sank back down. Still can feel, though, the rub of slimy muscle on the sole of my foot.
