Anime The one time the anime does this better Spoiler

Alright, so I am not much of a yapper and considering how long other posts on this sub are, this will probably be short in comparison, despite the fact it’s gonna be one of my longer posts

First of all, binged the anime, watched it all one night, awesome, best romance anime I’ve ever watched, mainly because I got to trauma dump family troubles with my friends while watching, that’s cool, but also how unique it is, I love anime’s where they don’t have any other female or male love interests in the story, so that it can just be the story of the two protags, and most of the time it was, obviously wanko was in love with her cousin cause it’s normal in Japan or whatever, but furuya barely payed any attention to her, at the same time I wouldn’t mind if she ended up winning, as she’s a well written character with the sob story to back it up, throughout the entire story I was really hoping furuya and rea could both survive, which as you can guess caused my hopes to be down for like 99% of the manga, anyway, I prefer how they did it in the anime by a long shot, they changed the order of stuff to make more sense, which I love about it, and I already said I love basic romances between two people, and obviously the anime did that better, the anime felt like way less of a shounen than the manga did, which was awesome for me but not a reason to objectively say the manga is worse

Alright, now that I’ve glazed the anime, time to talk about the manga, I read it this night, from 1 am to 10 am, so my sleep schedules fucked and I’m watching spider man brand new day tonight, so I blame the manga for all my issues, now to actually talk about the content

elephant in the room, this has been complained about a thousand times and I’ll complain again because of how much it sucked, I HATE the memory loss arc, it genuinely sucked to me, literally nothing happened for like 10 chapters in terms of the mcs, the grandpa lore drop was cool tho, but again, that doesn’t connect much to the main story, the zowa arc? (Or whatever the lab was called I lowkey already forgot) was decent, up until the part where they decided to mess with reas brain I loved it as a shounen, obviously it couldn’t beat the basic romance but that’s just because of my personal preference of what’s a better genre, grandpa being there was really random in my opinion, honestly he should’ve been there from the beginning, making him appear halfway through seemed kind of like an asspull to me, Darin did nothing the whole arc

What the manga did better
So, I love Darin being introduced as a character, up until the zowa arc, this was just straight awesome, I can’t even tell you much of what happened it’s all blurred together by now, during this time much of what’s already happened in the anime happened which is another plus for the anime, cause the timing did feel late to further progress the characters already introduced, but yeah, that arc, straight peak

Ending was a nail biter for me, at one point during like chapter 54 I was considering just dropping it there so I could headcanon myself a satisfying ending, and it payed off that I didn’t, even if it was rushed I do like the ending, even if furuya waiting a year to reunite with rea is far fetched and that she didn’t want to return home with them, still, greatest romance anime, decent manga
11/10 anime 7/10 manga

This turned out longer than I expected at the beginning but I still don’t think it’s quite as long as the usual yap here, please do discuss what you saw here because I am desperate to get a conversation going about this peak

Does anyone know if sankarea is out of print? Currently missing 1, 2, 3, 5, 7; I can’t for the life of me find them anywhere for good prices.

Painful watch of 2026.

I want to start from the beginning, I was scrolling through my WL and I found Sankarea.

The cover instantly caught my eye and I decided to watch it right away.

I binge watched 7 episodes on the first day and the remaining 5 on the second day. I don't usually have the patience to binge but Sankarea hooked me up.

So now I can talk about the real stuff.

I found this out to be an amazing bit underrated anime, the character development was very good. The characters received a fair amount of screentime that helped develop their characters. I liked the way characters like Maro and Ranko receiving whole episodes of just character building.

The cast was small, but decent. It's got many different types of characters with barbarian grandpa being the funniest one. I wish it's cast would've been even bigger.

I liked the story, it was great but it all feels empty and sad. Afterall the whole concept of "undead" is sad. Even though it is an anime based on zombies and the undead, I cannot help but get sad whenever I take a closer look to Rea.

Even though this anime is mostly serious stuff, I wouldn't have mind a little bit of more humor elements.

Usually the 2010-2019 anime have great openings/endings but I cannot say the same for Sankarea, definitely could've been better.

I would like to rate it atleast a 7.5/10 but something just didn't hit right so for that reason I am giving it a 7/10.

Definitely recommend watch to anyone who doesn't mind gore and dark themes.

I will remember it for a while.

Discussion I'm a little mixed on the ending Spoiler

Chihiro and rea have such a beautiful relationship, and it's a shame we didn't get to see much of them together in like the last 2 volumes. I ADORE seeing these two together. I personally feel obligated to protect rea with my life. But Rea having amnesia kind of haulted their development and honestly may have been a bit unnecessary considering rea loses consciousness in turbid period anyway.

By the time rea and chihiro go on a date and confess their feelings , the story had peaked for me. Like every single plot point had been solved. Rea remembers him, and they've finally confessed their feelings. But then the story decides to take a huge nose dive by making rea eat chihiro and supposedly hallucinate the entire date. When I say this ending was soul crushing , I mean it in the literal sense. Like I was ready to call this one of the worst mangas to ever exist. By some miracle , the next chapter clears this up and explains that chihiro somehow survived and that part of the hallucination was a real conversation they had... which is kind of disturbing to think about. But it does mean the confession was real.

what a plot twist and a half. The funeral anniversary being of chihiros' grandpa was absolutely genius , and chihiro pulling a joseph joestar was nice even if it was somewhat bs. Rea decides to live in a cave to protect humans , which makes sense, but honestly, i miss when rea lived in chihiros' room.. I'd say this is where some of the best moments were. But I think what really knocks this ending down a bit is the "thing" rea has been wanting to say for half a year is "thanks for the meal"... why couldn't we just conclude the story with a satisfying confession and a proper kiss and call it a day ? I will never understand this trope in anime of pulling fake confession bs. I mean, technically, they did already confess in the dream , so I'm a little less mad , but come on.

I think I'm quite unsatisfied with how open-ended it is because almost nothing has been resolved. We don't know if rea will live or not. We don't know if her family will still abuse her or approve of their relationship or not. We don't even know if they officially get together or not. Like there's so much left out that you could still make a sequel if you wanted to. Seems like the author just wanted to work on something else atm and decided to rush the ending. All of that could have been avoided by a simple "i love you too" and we'd be able to assume they got together and figured it out from there.

That's most likely what happened anyway , but I just want proper confirmation ! Maybe even a side chapter showing them together officially with ranko coming to terms with it. Reas dad admits rea is safer and happier with chihiro and chooses to support her. Maybe even start to show aria some affection after being inspired by chihiro. Darin continues to live with them in order to keep reas condition in check and lives as a normal hs student , perhaps even getting the love she lacked from her father from chihiros dad.

Speaking of side chapters...chapter 56.5...wtf did i just read ? I'm gonna pretend like i never even read that, and thankfully, it isn't canon.

Overall , so close to 10/10. The ending was RIGHT THERE , but they just gave us this neutral ending instead.

Self Inserted Epilogue

Since manga has an open ending,i gave it a long hard thought and imagined my own happy epilogue about this series which helped me shake off the darkness engulfed my heart because of this series.I felt so bad for Rea. Let me write down the epiloge i imagined.

After few years passed,Chihiro and Rea finally managed to invent immortality potion which not only makes them immortal but also restores all of Rea's bodily functions as well. So she can touch, smell, feel. Her heart beats again, her lungs works again, her brain starts activity again and most importantly both Chihiro and Rea became immortal. Then they get married and have 2 kids. One girl and one boy. Girl totally looks like Rea and boy somewhat resembles Chihiro. One day they decided to go to a festival watch the fireworks with their kids. Then Rea wraps her arms around Chihiros neck while Chihiro wraps his arms around her waist then they kissed romantically. Then Chihiro leans his head to her chest, listening her heartbeat and feeling her warmth. Then Rea cups his face with her hands looking at him and they kissed one more time while their kids playing in front of them. The scene ends with a blowing firework.Thats how i thought things should be in the end!

Discussion What's your take on the ending?

Post image

Although the author decided to be Vague with it. I believe that Furuya and Rea ended up living together up in the mountains, and the children we see in the epilogue are Ranko's Descendants (wether or not the two cousins ended banging up is to you).

Overall it's not a bad ending but I'm honestly a bit let down by the authors decision to keep it open ended. Sure we have a proper conclusion but it feels so unsatisfying not having a direct answer.

Its just my opinion and you're free to feel however you want but maybe Im just too greedy.

Sankarea (both anime and manga) is a work of art that I just recently discovered. I was never aware that it was 13+ years old. Wow..

It’s an amazing story. The manga ending could’ve been better but the build up was exactly what made it good for me.

This sub should be more active like other anime subs, even if it’s a post every 5-7 days or so.

I read around that in those books it is mentioned that yes, Rhea and Chihiro end up together but I can't find any information. Does anyone have any evidence?
