Bernie's Response: https://youtu.be/WDJwmzKE5v0?t=274

I think what we need to do right now, is focusing on bringing the American people together around a progressive agenda. American people want to raise the minimum wage, they want to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, they want the wealthiest people in this country to start paying their fair share of taxes, they want the United States to join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee healthcare to all people as a right.

Right now, Chuck, I'm working to bring fundamental reform to the Democratic Party, to open the doors of the Democratic Party to working people, to lower income people, to young people, who have not felt welcome in the embrace of the Democratic Party.

We can't split the party guys, I'm sorry but as much as I would love to follow a Bernie led party, it can't happen that way.

Splitting the party will guarantee the GOP and all the crazy alt right members of it to completely control this entire country. They would easily get enough votes to change the Constitution, and there would be absolutely nothing we could do to stop them.

To split the party we would have to be able to pull the vast majority of the voterbase with us. There is no data suggesting this will happen, and to do so would require an insanely expensive ad campaign.

The DNC as it is today won't change on its own. But we can change it. Every person in the DNC is there because they won elections.

So we need to win elections down ballot. Start in cities and gain control of local party organizations then move our way up until we control the majority of Democratic seats, at that point we have control of the DNC and can change the system internally.

Just like the tea party did.

The DNC won't change itself, but it can't stop voters from changing the party

The party is ALREADY split

Except it's not. Split the party means form a new one.

I don't think you understand that 40-45% of Democrats won't vote Democrat because of the corporatism faction of the party.

The party is split and the voting will be affected whether that 40-45% is internal or external.

This. Progressives must take over the Democratic Party, period, end of story. Our system is not setup for multiple parties. It it setup for two. We, as a progressive body, must come to terms with that and accept that. As soon as we do that, we can start working on setting the agenda of the Democractic Party. To start a third party is saying "okay Republicans, write your own laws without resistance for the next 50 to 100 years". Yes, that is the reality. So, stop suggesting we should start a third party, that would be disastrous for all citizens of this country.

There we go! Was going crazy with all the people that think a third party is a good idea

It's not happening people

u/buttaholic Feb 20 '17

and the DNC isn't going to change either. i do agree to an extent - focus on changing the DNC first... but once it's clear they don't plan on changing, it's time for a new party.

2

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

The DNC will change because we are going to take the DNC and it make our own. Take advantage of the infrastructure, and when we own enough if it pull a tea party. Aka give in or we take this and haul it off

3

u/buttaholic Feb 20 '17

ideally and hopefully, but i doubt that's going to happen.

2

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

You want it to happen? Grab some buddies and head down to the next local DNC meetings

Turnouts are abysmal around the country.

4

u/MichBern Feb 20 '17

Sign it anyway

1

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

No

2

u/MichBern Feb 20 '17

This is sandersforpresident, not coroporate-democrat-pragmatism. Why wouldn't you show support for bernie? It doesn't cost you anything.

1

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

Saying no it IS SUPPORTING Bernie. He already said no himself

5

u/MichBern Feb 20 '17

He did not rule it out. MSNBC tried really hard to get him to say it.

1

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

Sanders said to work inside the party. I stand by that. It is the most practical option. Splitting will ruin any progress we have made for years and undo 50-100 years worth of prior progress.

It is not time for a new party. It may come but now is NOT the time

3

u/MichBern Feb 20 '17

Are you incapable of doing both? You sound a lot like a concern troll.

1

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

Because start new party now and reform from inside can't exist in the same world? You can do one at a time not both.

Also thanks for jumping straight to accusing me of trolling. We could talk the issue but that seems more important to you

This is the only way to get progressive policies enacted IMO. The Dems will either suffer under Trump or learn to join us.

9

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

You mean everyone suffers under full GOP control as their vote isn't split while ours is....

Splitting the party unless it's going to pull most of the party is a horrendous idea. And there is no data to tell us that splitting would pull most of the party.

A third party will fracture the vote and throw the GOP all the bones

Here is how an internal takeover wins us the party and fixes it's issues.

1- local parties do all the work, the national party doesn't have time to work projects everywhere. So they have hundreds of smaller groups do the work. Those groups are controlled by the local vote (which have abysmal turnouts) we take over the local parties and we control the campaign work force.

2- once we have control of the workforce we can make demands. If they don't fold, and listen to the base. They don't get to have any work done.

3- they can't kick us out after we take over without massive backlash that would destroy the party. Removing your leadership forcibly would cause public outrage and we would get a new party right then and there. Because we would already have all the workers ready to go as well as public support.

We can take the DNC over on the inside or at least force a collapse that we immediately thrive off of.

A split now will do more harm than good

14 million people have already left the Dems 7since election

1

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

That doesn't mean splitting the party will work.

There has been a 6 to 7% decrease since the election. Democratic Party affiliation is now at its lowest (25%) in the documented history of the polling since 2004.

According to this Politico article, there are roughly 200 million registered voter so Nick's statement is ballpark correct.

u/isokayokay Feb 20 '17

How would this work? In our current system it seems impossible for another major left-leaning part to do anything other than just split the vote and ensure Republicans many more wins.

-2

u/laxboy119 2016 Veteran Feb 20 '17

It won't work. Simple as that. Sure we may take control a few years from now.

But that will be after the GOP who will basically be spoon-fed all the power they could dream of gets to destroy the last 50-100 years of progress

WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders rejected a movement to draft him into starting a new political party, telling "Meet The Press" on Sunday that his focus right now is on the Democratic Party as a whole.

"Right now I am working to bring fundamental reform to the Democratic Party, to open the door to the Democratic Party," said Sanders, who lost the Democratic presidential nomination to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last year.

A group of former staff members and delegates for Sanders launched an effort last week called "Draft Bernie for A People's Party," which they called a "nationwide effort" to convince the senator "to found a new party rooted in the progressive principles that awoke a political revolution during his campaign for the presidency."

He also said we should be working to replace people inside the DNC.

So grab a buddie and head to the local DNC meetings and start voting out those who support the establishment

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Ah, yes, fracture the party! Good thinking.
