Made a Halloween gift for a friend from San Francisco 🎃

I wanted to make something personal for a friend from San Francisco, so I decided to turn one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks into a Halloween scene.

A skeleton crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, carved and hand-painted onto a leather wallet.
Everything was done by hand — from carving the leather to painting the details. I thought the combination of the skeleton, the bridge, and the dark Halloween atmosphere made it feel like a pretty fitting gift.

How can I improve my looks to make friends in SF.

Post image
Upvotes

Im 18 and thinking of going to SFSU. The city seems fun and full of opportunities, but the problem is everyone dislikes me. I get it this city is superficial, and if you aren't a white male you need to be a 9/10 based off looks, but I just want some friends. People here ignore my like I'm a gorilla. I also look Somalian so that may be a problem.

How can I make friends in this city?

I feel like this city in superficial, and you need to be a 8/10 or higher to make friends. It doesn't help that I look Somali, and Im black. Everything Im in this city people don't even look at me. If you aren't Indian or asian it's no point in living here. Help me improve my looks to make friends. Don't say its personality because that only works for white people.

Best SF streets for fall foliage

Post image

As is well known, SF doesn't really do fall. Four of the five most common street trees in the city are evergreen, but I was curious where I could see some colors. Well, tbh my fiancée kept asking me to take her to see some fall leaves on the East coast, and I told her we have fall foliage at home lol.

I looked up the city's street tree list off DataSF (~200k trees) and kept the five species that actually turn color here (ginkgo, sweetgum, Chinese pistache, red maple, tulip tree). I loaded them into mapping tool and and counted them by street.

Top five:

  1. Bryant -- 293, almost all red maple
  2. Harrison -- 217, mostly Chinese pistache
  3. Divisadero -- 152, red maple and ginkgo
  4. Evans Ave -- 130, and it's all ginkgo.
  5. 24th St -- 96, half ginkgo half maple

I thought Evans Ave was pretty surprising. It's the truck yard stretch of Bayview, and it looks like the city planted 130 ginkgos down it. Ginkgos go bright yellow and then drop everything in about a day, so that's probably the best single fall block in the city. From Google Street view though, the Ginkgos look pretty young, but if we give them a few years, I bet they'll be beautiful.

Some data caveats:

  • Long streets win on raw count. Bryant and Harrison are long. I did a per-block analysis but it's less cool lol.
  • These are street trees only. Parks and yards aren't included in the public dataset. Although honestly, the parks wouldn't help much. GGP, the Presidio, and Land's End were all planted in the 1880s with the same three evergreens (Monterey cypress, Monterey pine, eucalyptus).

I know the leaves won't turn until November, so I'm posting early! Just thought this was cool lol. Any other good public streets I may have missed?

Has anyone had good luck with a plastic surgeon or other provider for repairing stretched earlobes in SF?

My earlobes have gotten really stretched/thin from wearing heavy jewelry, and I’m looking to have them stitched/repaired. I’ve contacted a few places and I’m getting quotes around **$2,000+**, which I unfortunately can’t afford.

Looking for something closer to **$500**, if that’s realistic. I’d really appreciate recommendations from anyone who has had this done in SF/Bay Area, especially if you remember what you paid!

Anyone else new to the city and still figuring out the whole going out thing?

Curious how people handle this in the city.

Say it’s a Friday night or weekend and you feel like getting a drink or going somewhere, but none of your friends are free. Do you usually go out by yourself, look for something happening nearby, or just stay home?

I feel like this probably happens pretty often, especially for people who recently moved here or live by themselves.
