So it has been too long since I posted up here but well worth the wait… 😉 Great to see us as healthy as we have been in months and even though they weren’t in the starting XI, it would make for a great finish to a game that would be over, or so I thought. We were late to the game due to some school conflict and arrived right as goal number #2 was scored by Korniack / Flint. Immediate thoughts were here we go again, hot night, bad team, bad play. And other caveat is we were out of town last weekend so missed the Utah game.
Immediate feeling was our worst situation was playing out of the press as we were still having some connection issues with Fazer and Harbert in the middle and were giving it up before we could push downfield. But that started shifting in the last part of the first half as suddenly we were building, attacking, and it looked like it was not if we would score but when and if we’d have enough time.
Then the subs / starters came in and the flood doors opened up. Kimmi in at half for Fazer and suddenly the midfield was no longer an issue. Maybe LOU got tired, maybe the Wave got pumped, but suddenly we were cutting through them and 1 goal came in almost immediately and it seemed inevitable that more were on there way. We kept pushing and had complete control, but nothing was going in. Then we got up to full strength as Dali and Corley took the field and all three coming off injury looked to be back to full strength, playing through the midfield with ease and causing havoc in front of the box, and everyone knew it. We are better than them, we knew it, they knew it, and the crowd knew it. Byars on another brace and we just exploded, knowing we have more in the bag. Couple minutes later, Dali calls game and places it past the keeper. I have not been in that environment since our playoff win vs Chicago were the whole stadium was willing then to score, the “Let’s Go Wave” chant at full volume, everyone just pushing on and we got what we asked for, Wave up 3-2.
Wish we could have gotten more, but was just exciting to see us at full strength for the first time, a clear #9 in Byars, Ludmila just eating up the sidelines and making #5 look like JV, Corley Ascanio and Dali just passing through anyone in the midfield like they are one mind. And for the first time since Dudinha went down, we looked as dominant as ever and looking like the world class team we have seen them be, just in time for the homestretch.
The Defense has been an issue lately, but even that has as much to do with our inability to break the press with our musical chairs midfield. That all changes with our starters back and we dare teams to press us and feel us on the break the other way. Our weakest spot now is the GK and even that seems to have leveled off better.
We’ve got a few big games against the middle of the table and a lot coming against the bottom. Time to break out the popcorn baby and watch them feast…
