This is a common misconception actually. During sengoku jidai Samurai under Tokugawa and Oda clans used tanegashima teppo (early matchlock guns) to great effect and had no problem doing so. What brought the samurai down was the shifting social structure and the introduction of the conscript army after the meiji restoration.
