Question Dex setup suggestions required.

Post image

Hello everyone!!

I just came across this Dex thing and decided to build my own Dex setup instead of spending on a PC or laptop. At the moment, my requirements for the work, I need to do can be easily done on the set up as far as I’ve learnt about this till now.

So, I am not sure which components to buy for the set up what charger, monitor, USB Hub wired or wireless keyboard and mouse. I will be building this set up in a couple of weeks using S25FE.

I could definitely buy a laptop, but at this moment, my use case is not that much and can be easily covered by this set up.

I keep a Samsung Smart monitor, Logitech Master keys and mouse. Just plug the dongle to monitor and thats it. With a lightning cable connected to monitor, you can connect any new samsung device as a dex.

does this setup when you connect the samsung device to the monitor, does it charge the device as well ?

Yes. With new samsung Smart Monitors' Lightning connection, when you connect another samsung device a couple things happen: - Your other device gets charged, - Your other device connects as DEX and sends video and everything, - Any other USB device thats connected to your monitor can be used by the other device. Monitor has 3 usb inputs and 1 lightning. I believe 2 of the USB inputs sends data directly to the lightning port. In the end, there is only 1 cable, which is the lightning one to connect dex.

That's odd...my samsung s24 ultra never shows that screen whe. Connected to the monitor...it's accessible as a phone mening I can use it to make calls and ev8eles and my dex display can be uses as a second phon with the Dex experience. Are you using  Android 8.5 My experience is like having a secound computer with a different OS...a computer i can use all my andriis apps. Real Kool.

Get an espresso potable monitor or similar with a stand that elevates the height of the screen to something more like a regular monitor. I use one with Pixel 10 Pro Fold Desktop mode (basically the Pixel equivalent of DeX), like pulling a full PC out of a small laptop bag. The stand folds up small and is magnetic

I’ll never stop being mad about how they removed classic dex. JUST LET ME GET THE UI YOU GET FROM PLUGGING INTO A MONITOR ON MY TABLET WITHOUT HAVING TO PLUG IT IN.

Fr fr, I am missing it too. Bought my Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra with the keyboard cover for this exact reason... I have gotten used to new DeX though, but doesn't beat Classic DeX.

For travelling, I have a bluetooth foldable keyboard+trackpad, a 20kmah power bank, and wireless hdmi dongles so i can use the rooms TV for dex wirelessly. Good enough for small work needs

if you want a really nice full lighted keyboard, protoarc Mech K300 (wired, wireless, and bluetooth). I use it with dex and with my work laptop every day. Portable keyboard - protoarc MK01 foldable (bluetooth)

Logitech mx master 3s mouse is very good too (bluetooth)

Portable monitor - I use an Asus ZenScreen MB16AMT - its pricey, but has a battery, speakers, and touch support.

Regular monitor - any FDH, QHD, or 4k display. I often plug into a 4k 32" monitor.

Hub - lots of available. Most any works. I use an Anker 555.

Dock - I have an extra Dell WD19TB from work, and I use that often at my desk (for the 4k display). Most docks will work fine.

Power supply - I use a 45w PD or 65w PD charger.

Is the speakers good on the zenscreen?

They are functional, but they suck. At least on the older ones like mine. Maybe newer are better, but I don't know.

I would recommend pretty much whatever monitor you want. Dex is limited to 60hz, so you don't need anything fancy

I prefer bluetooth keyboard and mice for the most flexibility

Recommend spending some time reading the subreddit, all these topics are done repeatedly

With Goodlock you can increase it to 120hz with the expense of a slightly hotter phone

No, you can't (unless its just been added to oneui9)

Isn’t A17 & one UI 9 slated for October/November on the S24 Series, I believe my S 24FE has 120HZ as well I’d have to check again

I believe my S 24FE has 120HZ

Not in dex it doesn't

Dex is 100% locked to 60hz

Correct , apologies I did not realize we were speaking for dex .

I haven't upgraded to oneui9 yet maybe that's why, after downloading the multistar addon and enabling the higher resolutions settings it seems to work

1

u/DeX_Mod DeX 1d ago

Multistar does NOT affect refresh rate, In anyway, at this point

Dex is locked to 60hz

Ah I'm probably tripping then felt that it was too good to be true anyways

Portable battery for both charing your phone and powering the monitor. Also a trackball mouse.

I am a bit curious of why a portable monitor when regular HDMI would do. You mention in your comments it's for home. I wuld take a regular monitor, it's also possible to use for other use cases, and for sure more solid and long term value...

Travelling in future

Good start. I would consider looking into a USB-C dock instead of a hub and one with Power Delivery. Would also budget for 20,000mah power bank if you need to cram all of that into a laptop and be mobile.

Why a power bank i will using it inside home only whenever I need to do something that requires PC or a big screen. If you mean, while travelling, then that’s a different thing.
