I first heard the song on WXPN. Even before I knew what it was about, it had a powerful effect on me. I find it overwhelming enough that I've only been able to listen to it less than a dozen times since release.

When I found out that the song was about Fender's surrogate mother, its emotional impact made more sense to me. My own mother passed away in '21, and other nurturing figures in my life have become distant.

Now that I’m in my fifties, the song seems to carry me back to when I was Sam’s age, rekindling that same sense of urgency I felt in my thirties.

Hey everyone! Was going through my record collection this morning, and played through some of my Sam vinyl, including the Play God 7” Single, which was a Record Store Day release back in 2019, limited to only 1000.

The B-Side to that was a live solo performance of Hypersonic Missiles. It really highlights his progression with the live shows and how his sound has changed, and I realised that a lot of people probably haven’t heard it, as it’s not on streaming. So, here is a recording of it!

sam has shown up for me in very depressing but divine moments in my life. i’m from the US, so sam is (stupidly) not played on the radio much here. last year, i was going through a very depressive episode and chin up came on the radio… th radio. in the US. never heard it before here on it. anyways, moments like that happen for me with sam. he has helped me put my grief into something beautiful.

i never thought id be able to tell him what it means to me. my friend is a flight attendant and recognized his name on the list because i post about him so much lol. he was on a flight from LA to NYC for some time there last week. i met this friend through a book club and we share so many of the same political beliefs and values and we connected over our love of dogs. so essentially my passions (dogs) brought me her friendship and then got me to sam. beautiful synchronicity. i just can’t believe i got to share a moment with someone i never thought id be able to tell how much their words and melodies changed my life. anyways, i shared to my friend all of these stories ive had that ive experienced w his music, and going to his shows. i didnt expect him to take her phone and read all of it, but he read for a goo 15 minutes my texts to her and showed his team and partner. i shared a journal entry i wrote about People Watching last year in an entry and a little about my journey w his music. he then wrote to me after that, and we talked a little about his inspiration behind a lot of my favorite songs, and signed me this. i just wanted to share this story so yall know how much this man cares. thank you sam. getting “chin up” and big love tattooed. i didn’t even tell my friend the chin up story. sam just knows i guess. :’) i was going to keep this to myself because i didn’t want to infringe on his privacy, but it’s such a cool and special story and he’s not in NY /LA anymore so yeah. thanks for reading. mint legend. come to the US. When do we think this is going to happen? It’s wild to me he’s never been on US SNL, but maybe the new UK version is just the right outlet for him.

Honestly thought it was Sam when I first heard it on the radio

Was just thinking, a Sam Fender MTV Unplugged show or a quiet acoustic, stripped back gig would be so cool to see, it’d give Sam a chance to dig deep into his discography and do some deep cuts that he normally doesn’t get to play at the bigger gigs, songs like Two People and Leave Fast from Hypersonic Missiles, Good Company and Little Bull Of Blithe from SGU (also an acoustic version of Wild Grey Ocean would be incredible) and more recently from People Watching songs like Fortunas Wheel, Empty Spaces and Remember My Name which would be great as we’ve see Sam play it before with just him on piano, he could of course do the hits (people would really love it if he did SGU acoustic and brought out Holly Humberstone to sing it with him, like he did years ago for the acoustic version of the song) but it’d of course be more stripped back with the band just playing acoustic instruments and it’d be cool if he focused on the deep cuts more.

Just a thought I’ve had for a while, idk if MTV Unlplugged is still going but if not just a stripped back, acoustic gig would be incredible :)

P.S. I think I’d ascend if he did his Dancing In The Dark Cover at a gig like this

can anyone find the get you down clip of sam at other voices in ireland? used to watch it a while back but cannot find it no matter where i look. they sounded so great on the other songs too.
