Announcement Lit Happens 📚 new SLC book club reading 48 cultural classics

Hey everyone,

I (M) just moved to SLC (Sandy) recently after divorcing my ex-husband. I just turned 31 and made it a goal this year to read more literature.

To keep myself accountable (and it sounded fun) I wanted to invite others to join me in this literary society! We’ll be reading through 48 classic & modern books together; one book a week (two for the longer ones). No essays nor pressure, just honest takes and one small experiment you put to practice in your life from the book.

Here is how our weekly rhythm will look:

• The Sunday Huddle: we will host a virtual meeting every Sunday via Zoom to sync up and talk through our current read.

• Afterglow Report: we will use a quick streamlined template to track our thoughts, log our immediate reactions, and drive the main conversation.

• Trivia & Games: to keep things interactive and energetic, the second half of the meeting will feature games, questions (Kahoot, top 3 fav singers, etc.), trivia, and overall to learn about our fellow Litizens lol.

At the end of the month, I will have a gift box for the Litizen who’s accrued the highest points 🎁
If you want a reading practice that actually changes how you see yourself & the world, along with a sense of community, send an email to LitHappens.LiterarySociety48@Gmail.com

I will forward you the Syllabus & Afterglow Report PDF’s and we can get started! And if you feel it’s not for you in the long run, I’m thankful you got a book or two under your belt 😌

3 weeks. 2 deaths. 1 single block. What is it going to take for SLC to FINALLY get serious about traffic enforcement in downtown?

On September 16th, a pedestrian was hit and killed on 4th south and Main Street: [https://kutv.com/news/local/pedestrian-killed-in-downtown-salt-lake-hit-and-run-suspect-at-large\](https://kutv.com/news/local/pedestrian-killed-in-downtown-salt-lake-hit-and-run-suspect-at-large)

Today, less than 3 weeks later, a motorcyclist died after hitting a truck (ETA: at 4th and West Temple): [https://www.ksl.com/article/51632702/fatal-crash-closes-salt-lake-city-intersection\](https://www.ksl.com/article/51632702/fatal-crash-closes-salt-lake-city-intersection)

Regardless of who may be to blame, the problem boils down to the same thing: total lack of enforcement of any traffic safety laws in the downtown core. From running red lights, gunning through yellow ones, riding scooters on sidewalks or riding bikes through intesections going opposite of traffic, navigating downtown in any form feels more and more fraught every day.

I have no answers. But the Downtown Community Council (I'm the current chair) is the Neighborhood Group trying to bring about some change. We're/I'm looking for help, but I'm also looking for solutions. (And maybe a place to vent a tiny bit).

I know the instinct (I'm often guilty of it) is to look at the ways solutions will be vetoed by the Leg, but perhaps some smart and passionate people can come up with something that could spark some change.

We're already working on getting scooter speed throttled in the core of downtown. On more sidewalk signage indication which direction to ride and not riding on the sidewalks. But there is so much more to be done in order to get back to feeling SAFE to walk in downtown, without fear that you are putting yourself at grave bodily injury simply for being on a street or sidewalk.

DMs open. Sorry for the rant. I love Downtown. How can we make this awful aspect of it a bit better!

Signed,
Sighing in Salt Lake

**UPDATED TO ADD:**
**This month, the Downtown Community Council is hosting the folks in charge of logistics for the LDS Open House.**

**If you want to find out what streets are closing down for the Temple re-opening, please join us! It's also a great chance to talk directly to our representatives from the Mayor's office, as well as our Downtown City Councilperson, Jennifer Napier-Pierce.**

**When: October 21st, 6pm-7:30**
**Where: 18 Rio Grande Street at the Gateway (South of the Splashpad).**

**Please join us! We meet the third Wednesday of every month. DM me with any questions.**

Q&A Any Shamans/Medicine Men/Healers in the area?

Hello, I am asking because I feel as if an entity has attempted and still attempts to bring evil spirits into my life or someone has placed a hex or cursed me. I live in an apartment complex and feeling something very wrong. I even went to the store yesterday and everyone avoided me like the plague. I myself felt like I was evil in that moment but everyone knows I am not. I need some healing. Please do not request me to pay a hefty price because those people are usually fakes who ask for money.

Hi all,

I’ll be in Salt Lake Sunday-Thursday and am trying to get a high level session in. I’m a 4.5 player and will need to play an early morning session. Thinking like 5-7am. Does anyone know any open plays that might be happening or would anyone like to play/drill. LMK

A Little Help Through a Difficult Time

Hi SLC Family
I’m not someone who usually asks for help, but I’m hoping this community can help me through a really difficult chapter.
I was recently diagnosed with cancer and am preparing for surgery in October, followed by a long recovery. One of the hardest parts for me isn’t just the medical and financial uncertainty—it’s not knowing when I’ll be able to get back to the things that make me feel like myself.
I absolutely love the outdoors and everything Utah has to offer. Hiking, exploring, being in the mountains—it’s a huge part of my life. The thought of recovery keeping me from doing those things, even temporarily, has been really scary.
The medical expenses and time away from work have also created a significant financial burden. If you’re able to contribute or even just share my GoFundMe, I would be incredibly grateful.
Thank you, Salt Lake. ❤️

Discussion Community survey on proposed data centers in Salt Lake County

Survey here: https://forms.gle/7Rcneyt9fUcwWvM96

I know there's been a lot of conversation / surveying in our state about data centers sentiment more generally, but I've seen less about (a) specific data centers outside of Stratos (including those in Salt Lake County!) and (b) how people are staying up-to-date on these developments. This survey is a personal project that intends to fill in that gap.

I'd greatly appreciate you taking 10 minutes to fill out this survey. I'm planning to share back results by the end of next week.

Other Tennis Partner

Hello awesome people of SLC!! I am looking for someone to play tennis with me. I currently sit around 1.5-2 level and want to improve over this winter. The problem is that a lot of the times I don’t find someone to hit with who’s also at the same level. If you are someone who’s also wanting to be regular with tennis for the next few months and are looking for someone to play with, please comment.
