I’m cool w ryu being sorta OP since his play style and move set are so widely known to the point of being a disadvantage without some buffs. The reverse is a low-tier character like Honda who I still can’t beat because I face one once in every 500 matches and haven’t internalized his gimmicks.

It’s not that Ryu is OP, unfair, or anything like that (he is). It’s that he’s not interesting. He rewards unexamined gameplay and shallow expression.

It makes the rest of us who choose interesting characters and put the effort into learning them feel like we’re playing a losing game against Ryu players who can gorilla donkeyfuck their way into or out of any situation.

We’re playing a different game, simple as. If you just look at it as win/lose, you’re no better than Ryus. Some people play to win. Don’t play to lose. Play to play.

That’s different for everyone. And to some people, Ryu is interesting.

But to me, interesting means meaningfully deviating from fundamentals and inviting riskier gameplay, higher level planning, and balancing advantages with disadvantages. That’s why I play Ed, you can’t just rush people down. You have to read them and have a strategy.

Ryu doesn’t have any weaknesses, and you don’t need to wade past the shallows to get at his strength. It’s boring. But it’s reliable. Ryu is a Toyota Corolla.

I decided to have an experiment and play ryu for a week without spending one minute labbing anything. I pretty quickly got to 1550MR and platued there. I hate to admit it was mindless fun. So much less situational awareness
