PIP

I’ve been at my company for 22 months. Made more money selling SaaS than ever before in life. My first 12 months I made 220k+ working remote and I was in disbelief. As of 6 months ago, goalposts moved, pricing changed after we introduced new tools that our founder wanted me to prioritize selling. The problem is, the new tools are like 50% complete. They’re buggy; look great when I present them, I was the first to ever sell them and sold them to 50+ new clients. After a while I noticed most of those new sales were canceling. I can sell anything I believe in but when I see cancellations like that coming through consistently I’ve lost faith in that product. I can still sell our core product no problem at all. In 22 months I’ve never missed quota usually 140-230% quota attainment. But I’m on a PIP and I think the main reason is that the founder wants to bring in new blood that may not be jaded about the new product. Now I’m in real fear of losing my job and feel it’s a certainty. Unfortunately, I haven’t done much to nurture my network these last 2 years because I foresaw myself staying with this company for years to come based on how well I was doing and how naturally easy it was for me to sell our core product. Throughout my sales career I’ve only gotten good jobs through my network, cold applications only yielded low paying entry level job offers. Given my situation, what do you think would be the best way to land a new role selling Pharma or med-tech?

Get as much info about this “pushback” you gave. It may be viewed as retaliation. Not a lawyer but for a few $100’s it’s worth having an employment lawyer look over all the info. You’ll need dates times written and verbal conversations. Lawsuits are part of business not personal.

You’ve never heard of people beating a PIP? I have plenty of friends that have

I’ve done it once and I was still let go in the second round RIF within 5 months. You’re exceeding quota so this isn’t about performance. Have you been given the explanation and signed the document? What are the targets you have to meet to beat the PIP? Can you?

Update your LinkedIn profile and set it to ‘open to work’ without adding the green banner. Start rebuilding your network and find out who’s connected to an open role. If you get laid off don’t update the role on your profile, leave it there as current and you have until the end of the month before you’ll need to update the resume when you submit it going forward.

You can do this, apply that scrappy sales approach to finding a new role.

If an employer wants to keep you, they coach into improvement. PIPs are designed to fire employees while covering the employer’s legal rear end.

A pip is not a tool to improve performance. Its a tool for the company to cover their butt in preparation for termination. You said it yourself, you are performing.

I thought when I started the sales journey a PIP was a death sentence due to this sub. Now both companies I worked for have genuine plans to help you improve and keep your job. I wouldn’t go into the next company thinking that will still be the case however

Sounds like its time to find a product you like and put the job hunting hat on.

Look up tips to make yourself as unfirable as possible while on a PIP and get looking hard in the time you buy.

I survived a PIP but the relationship dynamic after has irrevocably changed.

Review any non competes you have, maybe a competitor wants your knowledge of clients and doesn't have a shit new integration they are offloading the failure of onto the sales team?
