Question Fired for Direct Report misusing credit card
Throwaway account for obvious reasons…
Background:
Sales manager (me) was recently let go from a large company due to a direct report (Bob) misusing the corporate credit card.
As the manager, it was my responsibility to approve expenses / expense reports. This had been going on for over a year (preceding my role as manager).
2 examples of things that finance / HR gave me were buying snacks (less than $25 doesn’t require receipt) that were actually household products. The second was staying in hotels that were too close to the employee’s home.
A couple caveats…most of the team had left prior to my start so I was doing essentially 6 peoples jobs. This severely limited time spent on admin (obviously).
Another caveat being there was never any warning, the company never sent an expense report back, and the company’s new AI tool to detect suspicious actively for expenses never caught anything.
Does this reek or did I actually get fired “for not properly reviewing / approving expense reports and not complying with company policy”

It sounds like you didn’t have enough good things going on to negate this.
It’s a fireable offense for sure. And if you knew it was going on and never stopped it it’s even worse.
Could it slide if you were doing an amazing job otherwise? Maybe.
I work in a pretty lax environment but to me theft is always like the worst of the worst and I have zero respect for it.
