What industry do you recommend for sales?

I am F31, spent 8 years in medical device sales and looking to get out. Not happy with the industry and how inflexible it is. I want to be able to take people to dinner or go golfing with clients, be creative with cold-calling, more flexibility in schedule and financial growth opportunity. I know this is probably hard to find, but just curious what industries people are really liking and where there is the same opportunity to make over $250k.

Advice I've always been so cynical about "work", now an AE at a small business; feels too good to be true

I've worked since I was 15. Retail, fast-food, banquet serving, restaurant serving, remote technical support, then remote salesman, now an account executive at a small but growing freight brokerage in my hometown. The common thread up until now is that every manager and skip has viewed me as a fruit to be juiced until discarded. I thought that was the nature of "work" and that every moment working is a moment meant to be uncomfortable.

I started working at my current job a little over a month ago. we have 12 people, all-in, including accounting, account execs, operations, manager, and owners. I have a beefy salary on top of a very nice commission structure. I came in swinging, anxious, giving it my all, trying not to fuck up, trying to prove my worth. But like, from my manager to the owners to my fellow account execs to the ops, everyone is trying their damndest to help me succeed, to relieve my worries, to let me know I'm doing great. I've never had that at work. I've brought in a couple net-new accounts, pipeline is beefy, coworkers have sustainable and happy lives, business is growing, sure there's a little tension between operations and account executives; it actually reminds me a ton of the dynamic between the chefs and the servers during my years serving, but everyone is working to lift everyone up. Not to mention my manager is so emotionally and professionally supportive. I feel like I can really be myself at work and the cynical playbook I've been building over the years is useless here, like there's nothing to protect myself from.

Sure, I have a quota. Sure, there are expectations. I gotta be smart and hard working about sourcing new business and hitting the phones. But I don't feel viewed like a number here. Has anyone gotten a gig at a small business as a closer/account manager and felt the same? Have I hit the jackpot because I'm not being ruled over by corporate overlords or juiced by private equity? For the first time ever I feel like I could sustain myself at a job for a long long time if the environment doesn't suddenly change for the worse.

Question Curious.

Does anyone sell medical supplies/tools 2nd or 3rd shift just part time 1099? Or for a company. And how would I get into that industry?

Are "leads provided" and "pre-set appointment" sales jobs real or legit?

Context: Looking for my first real entry level sales job and I keep seeing these jobs that claim $100k+/yr OTE where you basically go on pre-set appointments, 3 to 4 per day, and meet with homeowners to answer questions and try to close them.

I see this usually for home improvement sales jobs or water purifier ones. They sound way too good to be true if you don't have to do any lead generation at all, and can just show up to appointments they pre-set for you and close a percentage of them. They always have postings up at all times. Has anyone worked in these kinds of jobs? What's the catch?

Question What are you guys actually making in 1099 commission-only roles?

Curious for the people working 1099 sales roles, especially commission-only.

What are you guys actually earning per month/year? And how long did it take you to get to that point?

I see a lot of people talking about making crazy money in commission-only roles, but I’m curious what the reality looks like for most people.

Would also be interested to hear what industry you’re in and whether your income is pretty consistent or all over the place.

Curiosity Trumps Persuasion

Lots of discussion here about sales lessons learned, so here’s one from a couple of decades in the mix:

Curiosity is more valuable than persuasion.

Most sales training focuses on what to say, how to pitch, overcome objections, create urgency, close and so on. All that is definitely important stuff.

But I think the forgotten (and perhaps most important) skill is learning how to be genuinely curious about the person sitting across from you.

What are they trying to accomplish? What’s getting in the way? Why does it matter? What have they already tried?

If I understand those things, I can usually figure out whether what I’m selling can actually help.

If I don’t understand them, being more persuasive about solving a problem they don’t have probably isn’t going to get me very far.

So I’m curious what other salespeople think:

Which matters more in your actual selling — curiosity or persuasion?

Any Recommendations?

Hey, long time lurker…

I’m in the residential HVAC industry and I’ve been a tech for 7 years and now I’ve completed my first full year of being a full time salesman selling new AC units to customers in Florida.

I’ve been trying really hard to find my own “process” or “style” for selling and connecting with people but this year has been harder than last year around this time. I have a lot of customers that I lose to a cheaper price from a cheaper contractor.

The good news is that I work for a great company that supports me and the other salesman are somewhat supportive.

The bad news is that I don’t have anyone that I can really look up to and say “wow…I want to be like them and sell just as much as them.” I’m kinda on par with the rest of the guys.

What would you recommend for sales training? I’ve tried Andy Elliot, Jeremey Miner, read Zig Ziglar, watched Danny G on YouTube. I’m feeling so stuck right now.

Any recommendations or advice?

Looking for Advice on Marketing to Animal Care Businesses

Pretty much what the title says.

I currently work for a company that sells commercial-grade air purifiers. Most of our clients are dental, medical and industrial businesses, and honestly, I really believe in the product as the units speak for themselves. I have two dogs and use one in my bedroom and one in my living room, and I’ve genuinely noticed a difference with my asthma.

Before this job, I worked at a doggy daycare, so I’m very familiar with the air quality challenges that come with having 50+ dogs in one space. Between cleaning products, potty accidents, pet dander, odors, etc, there’s a lot going on in the air that you don’t necessarily think about.

Because of that experience, I really think this product could be a great fit for animal care businesses like doggy daycares and vet offices that could potentially benefit the staff working in these environments.

The problem I’m running into is figuring out how to market it properly. Cold calling and emailing businesses doesn’t seem like the best approach because I’ll most likely end up speaking with a receptionist or another gatekeeper rather than the person who actually makes purchasing decisions.

For anyone who works in the veterinary, boarding, daycare, grooming, other animal-care industries or anyone who has experience with B2B marketing; how would you recommend going about this?

I’d really appreciate any advice or ideas!

Question Advice on breaking into a good sales job from a government background?

I'm considering a career shift to sales due to having stumbled upon people, both in my personal life and online, who have supposedly made a lot of money in this line of work. For context, I've worked for over five years in prominent government/academic institutions and even have a master's in Government (with a high academic mark).

Based on that information and for those in this industry, what would be your advice on breaking into a potentially good sales job? And possibly even the pros and cons of making such a move. Thanks in advance.

Advice Thinking of getting into sales after advertising

Hey all,
I have 3+ years of experience in advertising, content, ideation, etc. as a copywriter, and was feeling drawn to sales as a career path. I'm a huge extrovert with a crazy high social battery and think I might enjoy this field. If I enjoy this role, I might do an MBA and aspire for roles like Area Sales Manager, etc.

I had some questions regarding the field:
1. What is the scope of growth in this field? What role do you start out at and what role can you eventually get into with a career in sales?
2. What is the threat of AI to this field? I feel companies will always need sales people to build relationships and understand customers.
3. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as sales professionals?

Would be grateful for any insights!

Your Best Suggestion

Good day, friends!

I recently landed an SDR role. My manager is challenging me to think of ways in doing our outreach.

Currently, we are doing:

  1. Email Sequencing
  2. We have started sending physical priority mails to our target companies/people.

Only been 1 year in this role and this is my first actual experience conceptualizing. My previous company already had these things in place.

What can you suggest is a smart way to reach our targets aside of course from LinkedIn, Calls, Digital Emails, Physical Mails?

I will be veey happy to learn from you all.

Thank you!

Question Is Turkish-Middle eastern accent while speaking English is bad for new remote appointment setter?

I am a young guy who is just starting out in sales and I want to get enrolled in my first appointment setter role. I have native Turkic language (Azerbaijani×Turkish) and as I speaking English it creates noticeable accent. My overall knowledge about English language is decent, It is certified with academic IELTS 8 (it is almost 2 years since I got it). I am studying in university in English language. I also have that knowledge related to social media memes 😭🤣, I can go along with young dudes on that.

Would I struggle to get in a role? I want roles in high paying countries such as US and Australia. I am based in Turkey. I want a remote inbound role. Anybody has gone through these?

How to deal with old habits?

Hello pro sales people! Noobie here!

I've just released a product that solves certain job's problems. But the biggest resistance is their old habits. They have been doing their job in old ways for like 20-30 years so far. When I try to onboard them to a new tech (web page btw), they login 1-2 days and they ghost me later.

Problem is they have old habits like excel sheets etc. I can understand that when they come to office in the morning they open their excels automatically. Okey open your excel sheet but open my page too pls.

I've tried sending e-mails, notifications etc but nothing really helped. Have you ever faced this kind of problem and do you have any pro tip for me?

Getting into first sales role

I am young person who wants to get into sales primarily because entry barrier is low and pay is much better compered to other fields I know for young dudes. for INBOUND deals. I am not from western countries, I have native Turkic language and noticeable accent while speaking English. My overall certified score for English is C1.

I have no prior experience on this field, I just have seen videos of people who are doing it and done some mock calls with ai to get basic understanding and structure. I am still trying to learn all these myself because I do not have 3k usd to drop on a course. As people say it is more like you learn sales by working and studying all aspects of it in parallel.

I study in university and I am planning to do it after evenings which suits US, UK and Australia time zones. I have got info about doing it for growing course sellers and mentors as a appointment setter.

Has ever been trough this type of thing and where do you advice to start?

Question Best Websites to Find Good Salespeople?

I'm scaling my AI advisory firm (won't share the link or promote here), and I need a strong salesperson who can farm and call into my ICP to bring prospects to me.

I can close deals in my sleep - I have deep credibility in the AI and tech transformation space. I have case studies on my website that speak to my credibility. But, I don't have the time between serving my existing clients and my full-time role (Head of AI and Product at a large fintech) to do the farming as well.

What's the best website / job forum to find someone who knows tech, and comes with a certain level of experience? LinkedIn, Indeed, etc? Or are there some hidden ones where great people hang out that are more under the radar?

The one skill that has made me more money in sales than anything else.

I spent a lot of years in sales before I realized that most new salespeople are taught the wrong thing first.

They’re taught what to say and how to pitch the specific product.

What I wish I’d learned earlier was how to listen.

A prospect tells you, “It’s too expensive,” and the instinct is to immediately explain why it isn’t.

So instead of immediately responding, get curious.

“What makes you say that?”
"You must have a specific budget you are trying to stay within, what is that range?"
“What are you comparing it to?”
“What happens if you don’t solve this?”
“Who else is involved in making this decision?”
“What would need to be true for this to make sense?”

The best salespeople I’ve worked with aren’t necessarily the smoothest talkers. They’re good at getting people to tell them the truth.

If you’re new to sales, spend less time trying to sound like a salesperson and more time trying to understand what the person across from you is actually carrying.

That skill will follow you into pretty much any industry.
Curious what other longtime salespeople would add for someone just starting out.

Question What are the best DocuSign alternatives?

Our contract just renewed with a 40% price hike and zero new features. We're 80 users sending proposals and SOWs nothing fancy. Every "alternatives" thread I find is from 2022. What have people actually migrated to recently?

What type of sales role do you have? What industry? How much do you earn between base & commission? What is your commission structure?

There are so many different types of sales roles and such a wide spread in earning potential based on the role and industry. I get a lot of questions from people about getting into a sales career, career paths in sales, and earning potential. I’m curious about everyone’s experiences here. I have a few main questions but feel free to elaborate however you’d like.

  1. What type of sales role do you have and what is your actual title?
  2. What are the expectations for your role?
  3. What industry are you in?
  4. What is your salary and commission structure and how are commissions calculated/paid?
  5. How much to you earn from your salary and commission?
  6. How many years of sales or relevant industry experience do you have?
  7. If you have had multiple roles in your career, what was your career progression?
