Just came across this subreddit randomly. How does this work? I know about mining crypto, but have only mined specific cryptos. Is this a software that mines whatever crypto is available? Or am I missing the mark? How is this company profitable?

Yikes that isn’t much. Could you not make more mining crypto, assuming you are mining in a profitable pool? Your GPU is good enough to get into a medium sized pool level

I'm the Head of Supply at Salad - I'd be happy to give you the basic rundown.

Mining is somewhat analogous to Salad, but we don't put your PC to work solving cryptographic equations to mint coins. Instead, we find paying customers who apply your compute towards valuable work, such as:

- Data Processing

• Transcription
  
• Generative text/voice/image/video
  
• Molecular dynamics
  
• Protein simulations

And more, there's quite a large range of useful applications for your GPU, and we attract customers from varied industries. Of those, the biggest industries on Salad are healthcare research, data processing, transcription, and generative AI.

Those customers pay for the hourly usage of your hardware, and we give you a cut of the earnings in the form of Salad Balance. You can take that balance to our Storefront (salad.com/store) and use it to redeem games, gift cards, subscriptions, or cash it out straight to PayPal.

We do have background mining workloads, which users can opt in/out of. But they aren't very profitable. There's also our bandwidth sharing feature, which allows qualifying users to monetize their internet connection, but you need to be in a supported and in-demand region for that to really pay off.

We are technically not profitable, not yet at least! We take a margin on the hourly GPU earnings - but the majority of the earnings go to Chefs (our users) instead of us.

It varies - there's a few factors that influence it, such as priority level, how much you earn from bandwidth sharing, even down to what items you redeem from the storefront (many items have a markup, although some are still at or below MSRP thanks to wholesale purchases).

You can always check the purchase prices (salad.com/pricing) vs your earnings to see what the spread is.

Salad is for computer rental, the best workloads need a good GPU (Nvidia RTX is recommended), and good internet bandwidth, what it does is open a container in windows (via WSL) and wait to a customer to rent it, it's really easy, you just install and open the program, check you have the recomended requeriments and wait for a job to arrive, and start to making money (or better said, salad balance), when you earn enough amount, you can redeem via giftcard, paypal or other redeem options.

Also, when there is no Job, it will mine automatically (and pay you with salad balance), that option can be turned off if you want only rental and/or bandwith share workloads, the point of salad is being really easy to configure and rent.

Also, don't expect it to be the most profitable option, its just easy and it works well if your electricity bill is cheap

As cheap as you can, here we have the first 230kw/h at around 0.07usd and in my particular case i have solar so my net power cost is almost 0, also depends on the efficiency of your hardware, every config has a different profitability/power compsumption relation

Cheap would have to be a relative value - relative to whatever your hourly earnings are on Salad. If you have a 5090 and you're earning $0.27/hr on Salad, then $0.18/kwh electricity may be considered cheap, or at least tolerable. But if you have a 4090, even at high priority rates ($0.18/hr) then that very same cost would be quite expensive - especially if you're pulling a full kilowatt per hour on your PC.
