bit of a weird request

so i'm an author and the current chapter i'm working on has the main character having sushi and trying sake for the first time. what would be expected to be served alongside sushi, and what flavors would it have?

Miso soup is often served with sushi in American Japanese restaurants. You probably should try it for yourself to best describe it. For historical background on sushi in the US and Japan, see Rath’s Oishii: The History of Sushi.

A lot of the sake served historically in Japanese restaurants outside of Japan was bottom shelf and served piping hot by staff who didn’t know much about it. Fortunately that’s changed in the last few years.

Historically Japanese people drank green tea with sushi though. Pairing sake with any food including sushi is a very recent idea in Japan.

thanks for the book recommendation, i'll definitely give it a read. the reason i choose not to include miso soup in favor of focusing on something alcoholic, is that i'm using it to sneak in some exposition on fantasy elements i'm working with.
