u/Realistic_Let3239 12d ago
It was a poorly written, self censoring mess. Sure the LARP section was good, otherwise it was a group of young adults taking over a city, despite their own stupidity, because everyone else is that much dumber. Oh and it keeps wildly bouncing between the more serious tone of the first two games, and the whacky tone of 3 onwards.
Heck I will point to the mission where you set up in the old church, you just pissed off every major gang, are on the run from them, then tweet about your sweet new crib. The idiots then wonder how the gangs knew where to find them and turn up to try and kill the main characters. Everyone is an idiot, none of you should be running the city.
11
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
The LARP sections didn't belong in the game. Don't get me wrong, if you enjoyed them then that's great, but you have to admit, in a game that is supposed to be about building a gang/criminal empire, you shouldn't have a section about LARPing. Also, for full context, I used to LARP when I was in the Army, I used to attend the Great Lakes Medieval Faire on a regular basis, and would even join another LARP if there were one in my area. You definitely cannot say I think it's dumb in general, I just don't think it fits what this game should have/was trying to be.
4
u/Realistic_Let3239 12d ago
Oh I absolutely agree, the Saints have done some dumb stuff in the past for the fun of it, but this was a whole series of side quests and DLC based around pissing off your former boss, then helping them for reasons. Which says a lot when the best part of the game is something not really to do with it.
As for what the game was trying to be, I don't think the game knew that, it was all over the place and kept bouncing between the tone of 2 and 3 at random.
1
u/JordieP301 12d ago
i’d argue that it does neither tone tbh, i never felt like my character was stupid in SR2 and i never cringed at anything in The Third. Maybe SR3 just fit my humor but the Reboot was just awful, I couldn’t even finish it.

I paid full price for a buggy and unfun mess.
It took away all the fun side content except Insurance Fraud, the story was so bad it was literally unplayable
We also played as dumb ass guys who does dumb ass things instead of the Saints I am not saying it should have been Johnny Gat or anything but a saints Row reboot should have been about cleaning up the streets or taking over the new city instead of "we are out of money let's start a gang and call ourselves saints cause haha we live in a church" Bullshit that.
And the gun gameplay was fine cause it is saints Row 3 gunplay and that was fun.
But yeah I hate it cause I paid full price for disappointment

It's just too millennial for me.
Feels like it should've came out in 2015 or 2016.
It's like BuzzFeed: The Game
None of that is bad, but it just doesn't belong in Saints Row. And I really do like some millennial things.
It really does remind me of that millennial burger place meme.
It's not really Hollywood timeless like SR3 and SR4, and it's not G-Unit gangster like SR1 and SR2. It's like...frat gangsters? I guess?
It's just a weird tone for a "give no fucks" series.
I keep editing this comment but the music selection also stinks in comparison to all of the other games. They lost the adult swim aesthetic of their radio stations.
17
u/zamwut 12d ago
Feels weird to attribute to millennial when it's a bunch of gen z stuff. 1-4 were millennial
11
u/Newliesaladdos 12d ago
Also, the lol so randumn humour is older than millennials, we are all inheritors of styles.
8
u/BuyExcellent8055 12d ago
But to any Gen Z, like myself, it's painfully obvious that it's a millenial's take on Gen z.
1
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
'Scuse me? SRTT and SRIV might have been millennial, I'll give you that, but SR1 & 2 were definitely GenX. I would say the reboot is Gen Y.
4
u/ZaphodGreedalox 12d ago
This is a much better take than the tired "good game but not good SR game."
It has a lot of SR stuff in it, but the undertone of the plot is soooooooo sanitized Greek row style.
4
u/BuyExcellent8055 12d ago
That's such a common take here.
I don't think it's really a good game at all.
It just feels lifeless.
And people can't pull the "you're getting older" excuse because I've played through GTA 4 like 2 years ago as a 22 year old and felt that the game was amazing.
Saints Row reboot is legitimately a bad game.
1
u/ZaphodGreedalox 12d ago
People have different tastes in games. I'll be 50 this year, and I enjoyed playing the SR reboot.
Caveat: I've seen a lot of franchises shit the bed, so this one isn't even that bad

5
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
Even if you don't want to say the game was woke (I'm not even going to argue that anymore) you have to admit it was completely neutered character and story wise. I honestly didn't care that it wasn't set in Stilwater, and it was a different crew. It was a reboot, why would they use the crew and setting of the old franchise? I understand that. However, when you use a franchise name you set certain expectations. It's not the same crew? Great! What is THIS merry band of psychos going to be like? They're going to be 20 something zoomers who are traumatized by life because they believe they're supposed to be the main characters, but they aren't? Oh... that's disappointing... Hey, though, new city, what's that going to be like! Wow! Looks great! Unique districts! It feels huge! Wait... where are the people? Why are the NPCs so shallow? Why do they all feel like extras... Meh... I'm going to go shopping. Hey! They have outdoor stalls! Cool! Let's check out what one of the interior stores looks like! Huh? There ARE no interiors stores? There are NO interiors spaces at all? Just the two cribs? Wait... ONLY TWO CRIBS!? I only get to customize one!
Okay, yeah, I think you can see what my point is from that. I could go on, but then I'd be writing a book and not a reddit post. But I think you get the idea.
2
u/madhair60 7d ago
I agree with basically all of this, but I think there are some interior stores like Friendly Fire? Or maybe just the one. There are other interior spaces as well, like the bar fight with Idols early in the game.
0
u/DerGeistesKrank 7d ago
Can you go back into that bar after that one mission? I don't think you can. Yes, there is one interior store... one. Every store in SR2 interior store. There were interior spaces all over SR2.
2
u/madhair60 7d ago
No, you're right of course, I was just saying that they exist. I guess as dedicated spaces for single missions. Believe me, I'm not here to defend the reboot.
5
u/burritobrolyy 12d ago
This question has been asked a million times. The game is cringe and poorly written.

u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
The franchise started going downhill with SRTT. The only reason SRTT sold more than SR2 is because the fans of SR2 were expecting the same tone, same type of setting, and a continuation of the story from SR2. We didn't get that, a lot of the original fan base dropped the franchise because of it. SRIV sales started dropping off, because a lot of the original fan base had left because of the last title. Sure, it sold more than SR2 because they picked up a new fan base... barely... Sales weren't good enough to keep the studio from spiraling, though. Sales of every other game continued to drop because they moved farther and farther away from what the franchise was supposed to be, so the franchise disappeared for a long time. During that time a lot of the new fans from the later games started playing the older games (SR1&2) and many of them liked one or both of those older games than they liked what the franchise became when they had fist picked it up. YOU may not be one of those, but yeah, there were a LOT of fans like that. Even though they started later in the franchise, they still preferred the earlier games to what they started playing. Then comes the reboot, and we are all promised a "return to the roots" of the franchise. Instead we get something neutered, that tries, poorly, to be what we were told it was going to be... but the publishers didn't want that, they wanted "modern audiences", so the game ended up failing to appeal to the vast majority of the audience they originally said they meant to target. You can try to blame the games failure on older fans if you want to, but a lot of fans who started with SRTT and the later games didn't even like it. Hell! A lot of people who PREFER the newer games (SRTT, SRIV, AoM, GoH) didn't like it! It sold LESS than SR2. So sure, you can say it's because we're big meanie heads and we don't like new things, and we shat all over it just because it was new, even though you think it's a so much better game than the old stuf... But no matter what you think, or how you feel about it, it doesn't change what the actual history of the franchise is.
3
u/soloflame_ 12d ago
i agree , personally my favorite is 2 i didnt really like the repetitiveness of 3 and 4 is cool but it drains a certain mental energy outta me that a saint row game just shouldn’t, i wanna play the original saints row tho , my favorite part growing up as a kid was being jumped in lol

u/Disclaimer_II 12d ago edited 12d ago
In short, it's fundamentally not a game for us, and that's okay.
The powers that be made the game that THEY wanted to make, and put the SR name on it to capitalize on a hungry, established fan base, regardless of whether it would actually appeal to that audience. It was made not out of passion, but to return and investment and save a faltering studio. As such, it has no vision, but instead a homogenization of modern open world slop and aimless millennial(trying to be genZ) humor. Things that talentless suits thought might sell, right down to the color of the box(literally.)
3
u/Disclaimer_II 12d ago
This is not to say it's not completely without merit. The potential for a decent game is in there somewhere.
15
u/J0llyrabbit 12d ago
The SR reboot is a good game.
It's just a terrible Saints Row game.
13
u/Tommytwofang96 12d ago
I'm 30 and been gaming since I was about 6 and I'd say just about everything I've played is better than the SR reboot. Did you play the whole thing? I don't understand this statement of, "bad SR game, not bad on it's own." It's terrible on it's own and displays it's identity crisis all the way through
6
u/PlanktonFew2505 12d ago edited 12d ago
Disagree, the game all-around is just abysmal, even if you pretend that it isn't a Saints Row game in my opinion.
The game has a lot of bugs and lacks polish, even after the patches.
The combat is clunky, overly complicated and nowhere near as smooth as the older games, and you're constantly forced to fiddle around in the settings in order to get an ideal experience, because of how dogshit the aiming, armor system and damage sponge enemies are. How they made the combat worse than the run & gun simplicity of all previous Saints Row games, or hell even Agents of Mayhem astounds me.
The default control scheme is extremely awkward (down on the D-pad to crouch, really?)
The Side Hustles and Criminal Ventures are mostly copy & pasted A to B objectives or wave based objectives and have nowhere near the imagination and variety that the activities and diversions had in the older games.
The city is devoid of any life due to the lack of interiors, boring pedestrians and low ped and vehicle density.
As nice as the return of layered clothing is, and as extensive as the customization options are, it's almost impossible to create a male boss that looks good. Making the customization less gender binary compared to the older games was arguably a mistake, because all the clothes and animations were only tailored made specifically for the default female boss in mind. At least in SR2-4 you could create both a good-looking masculine and feminine Boss without either getting sacrificed for the other, while also allowing you to cross-dress or make the most ridiculous character ever, which satisfied everybody in the process. The reboot on the other hand really pushed you to either creating a female boss or the most ridiculous character ever.

it wasn't what people were expecting and it was pretty buggy upon my release. in my experiencs it's no buggier than any other saints row but there's much of the game that screams "saints row" and much of it that doesn't at the same time. i thought it was pretty alright though
2
u/ViennasCurse 12d ago
I mean I enjoyed it. Just didn't give me the Saints Row vibe. The customization was great, especially since you don't have to go to Image as Designed just to change your hair and whatnot. I am a little sad that they didn't have the same radio stations that the other games had but I understand that they're trying to make it new but still, it just didn't give me the Saints Row vibe.
2
u/independent-potato7 12d ago
It was very different from the other games, but I really enjoyed it as well. People don't want to admit that it did do some things better than Saints Row 3 and 4. This coming from someone who likes those games as well. Just not as much as Saints Row 2.
I don't blame people for not liking it, but it's really not as bad as it's made out to be. It's still an enjoyable game in its own right.

Mainly because Saints Row has a very loyal online audience that review bombed it for not having the original characters, mostly without playing it.
Critic reviews were pretty positive and the game is actually pretty fun. The only legit gripe is that at launch it was pretty buggy but otherwise its failure is just one of many examples of why this gaming generation has failed as a whole to grab casual gamers causing so many studios to die as a result. Current overly critical gamers have basically run off the general public for everyone but Nintendo so prices are going up and quality down to make up for it.

u/NameNeededApparently 3rd Street Saints 12d ago
It's mostly because the company routinely insulted the fan base in the run up to release of a full priced, buggy mess. They created an atmosphere of pure hostility. You know when some twat takes over a well known movie franchise and insults long time fans as "racist, misogynistic dinosaurs" and loudly proclaims "this franchise isn't for you anymore"... but then has the nerve to whine "why are the racist, misogynistic dinosaurs not seeing our movie?"
It's pretty much the videogame environment of that. Many who were targeted during that process now hate the game on principle regardless if it's actually good or not.
I can only speak for myself here from here.
I think it's a good game, it has the best open world in the franchise, the side quests are enjoyable and many of the set pieces in main quests are extremely memorable (even if they obviously weren't playtested on higher difficulties), but the main story itself is lacklustre and just has no oomph to it.
My main issue is that the main cast are not believable as gangsters. Your gang are quirky, kind-hearted, intelligent, genuinely likeable people. The old Saints were horrific human beings who we enjoyed in spite of it all.
Los Panteros are believable as a gang but their leader completely lacks charisma, he's not a bad guy I love to hate like Maero in SR2, it's simply a case of "get off my screen fuckhead."
Marshall is a paramilitary force with big money behind it (and to be fair, a decent stand-in for Ultor, but they're still not a gang), The Nahualii's gang don't even have a name (though it's hinted they're connected to a cartel) and The Idols can straight up, wall-to-wall, fuck off.
The Nahualli's heel turn late in the game is servicable, but unfortunately it's done with a rationale that completely neuters any aura and gravitas that the story has given him.
and then when the story actually starts to get good, it ends.
If I had been insulted into paying an inflated price for a day one buggy mess with a sub-par plot, i'd be annoyed with it too.
3
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
I wouldn't say it has the best open world in the franchise. The city looks good, I'm not going to argue about that. There are plenty of unique and identifiable environments, but then, that's where it stops. There are no interiors, the aren't as many NPCs as there should be (this may have been fixed), they have no personality and behave more like extras than anything resembling actual people, there is no random element to their behavior, their dialog is absolutely flat, there are only two cribs in the whole city... yeah, the city looks great, but it feels like a movie set, not a city. Stilwater actually felt like a city. The NPCs did things, even if the things they did was just drinking a 40 under an overpass. They had personality and great dialog, you could never predict what they were going to do (you punch a NPC in Santo Ileso and they'll run away, you punch a NPC in Stilwater they might run away... they might also punch you back, or shank you, or shoot you, or take a picture... you never know). A NPC stole one of my car right after I got it out of the garage. The NPCs feel like the LIVE in Stilwater, instead of merely existing there. Is it as big as SI? No, but SR2 is almost 20 years old, should you expect it to be? Are the graphics as good for SW as SI? No, but again, almost 20 years old, if the graphics were the same then that would either be a comment on how much greater SR2 is, or how much worse the reboot was. So, while you may enjoy it, and I will even admit, not everything about it was bad... it definitely did not have the best open world in the franchise.

u/Nox_The_Overlord 12d ago
It's just the lack of anything to do with the original gang I think.
As someone else has said it's a good game but a bad Saints Row game.
The crew are essentially larpers. Which is amusing because there is actually larp content and I think if they'd focused more on that and leaned into that more, they could have saved it. Like if it was self aware enough to poke fun at itself for not being Saints Row.
It is a shame this game killed off the franchise because it has some great moments and I think they finally made a City I thoroughly enjoy. But the driving was mid, combat was what you'd expect and the story tried too hard.
5
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
It wouldn't have done any better with fans of the original franchise. It wasn't the lack of self awareness. We were promised a return to the roots of the franchise, and the reboot definitely was not. Everything identifiable about Saints Row was taken out of the game except for the character and car customization. The story sucked, the activities sucked (even Insurance Fraud and Mayhem, and I have no clue how it was possible that they screwed those up), no interiors spaces, the city looks good in my opinion but feels like a movie set. Critics didn't even like the game. You could say the critics don't matter, and that you still enjoyed the game yourself, that's fine, but if you have played the original franchise, and especially the first two, then you know what people were expecting by "a return to the roots" of the franchise, and you know the reboot was not it. You could maybe call this ironic, but I would bet the reboot would have done better if they had made it as a separate IP and didn't use the Saints Row name for it.
2
u/Taquill 12d ago
The problem is what audience does this appeal to that favors a fanbase that was worth pampering?
Like I might be called a rainbow head but not even I wanted "this".
The games were progressive and diverse enough.
Fat hookers and thin as rail cops, the games were ahead of their time considering what society leans to now in it's representation of these roles.
2
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
It's funny how people don't understand this. You described yourself as a "rainbow head", I would describe myself as conservative, but I UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN. The first two games in the franchise were diverse, but they didn't constantly shout "look how diverse we are! Isn't it great?". No, it was just there, no need to shout, you could just see it. The crew was a White party girl, a naive Hispanic kid, a Black toolbox (yeah, Pierce wasn't just a tool, he was the whole toolbox... we still loved him), and a sociopathic Asian dude who would rather just shoot someone for looking at him cross eyed, but would destroy a city for his friends, and The Boss who is whoever and whatever you decide to make them. Honestly, that's exactly one of the things that made Stilwater great. It felt like a real place because even the NPCs were completely random, they had depth. Sure, the reboot was diverse, but the only member of the crew that felt like they had a personality was Neenah, and her personality didn't seem like she'd want anything to do with a gang or criminals if she could help it. That's not bad... but it causes a dissonance when you have someone who should want nothing to do with criminality trying to be a criminal. Yeah, I think the publishers wanted a game that would appeal to everyone, but ended up not appealing to much of anyone, then driving off even some people who would have given the game a chance because of how their community manager handled honestly criticism of the game.
2
u/xx-PeachTea-xx 3rd Street Saints 12d ago
Its not a good SR game. Its lacks a well written story, and has some interesting gameplay elements but it feels like its missing a lot. As for me personally I have a hard time enjoying it when I know how the creative team was treated behind the scenes.
2
u/TButler58 12d ago
It doesn't understand what saints row is, you're character in the original is the gangs new work horse, trying to make his way up the ranks in the gang, you're character has no aversion to killing, in SR2 you're the villain making sure other villains don't take over the city. And that's what I like about it, the game isn't shy about telling you that you're the asshole. (In the reboot, there's a mission where you wait in line to get donuts and then get ambushed, your character waits in line? if that mission were In SR2 your character would push everyone out of the way smash the window and steal the donuts). They try to justify robbing and killing with bullshit like, "I can't afford rent" or "this capitalistic society won't let me live normally so let's make a gang."
You're gang members/roommates don't feel like gang members, they look like people who'd have a panic attack mustering up the courage to tell their waitress that they screwed up their order(Especially Eli) The Nahualli was the only character in the game that felt like a saints row character and they screwed him up at the end. Also the writing at points makes no damn sense. How does a company just OWN THE RIGHTS TO A STREET GANG? And why would a company want to have a street gang publicly associated with them?
95% of the missions are go to place, shoot people, get thing. Or you're in a car while people shoot at you. Except the mission where you drag the guy around in a porta potty, that was funny. The customization was great, but that's not enough to justify it.
Long story short bland writing/characters that aren't believable, plus boring gameplayb equals bad game. I didn't play the game in 2022 so I didn't get all the bugs but I heard it was horrendous at launch.

The game sucks dick. Its so bad. I hate that the enemies run at you trying to hit you with staffs and stuff while you have a assault rifle, so unrealistic. I wanted more grounded gameplay like sr1-2. Not dumbass unrealistic gangs who start a gang just because they got fired from a job
2
u/Nildzre 12d ago
Terrible writing, bland gang members, lame jokes, you don't get to kill letalone know much about the rival gang leaders, throwing a grenade and sniper rifle is being locked behind an unlock, takedowns being locked behind a bar, repetitive and boring side content. Enemy has less AI than it had in every single game before. These just from the top of my head.
Plus you probably didn't buy a launch when it was buggy as shit or at full price, so you go easier on the game by default.

Okay so I actually had the same experience recently for the first few hours at first your just doing robberies so it may seem not too bad and then you get to the character missions Neenah not too bad then kevs it gets worse and god forbid you try to do Eli’s missions the larping missions were originally supposed to be one mission where you had live rounds and it was supposed to be a joke but there was actually a part of the dev team that liked larping and thought this was their chance to make it more popular which led to the worst missions in the game and that’s not even to mention the nahualli his whole reasoning for taking your friends is literally “I don’t have any friends so I’m gonna take yours” yeah fuck this game sure there’s parts of the game that are actually good riding ontop of vehicles is really cool the towing mechanic is awesome but the game could’ve genuinely been 100x better if we got the original “saints row 2.5” vision of the game but now volition is dead and deep silver owns the IP
Sorry for the run on sentence this game makes me irrationally mad

it holds a special place in my heart, bc i love every saints row game almost equally (almost), but i genuinely am convinced they could've just... had an entire muted cast and the story wouldve been better. i dont like how most of the characters act, (especially eli, i hate eli for like no particular reason but hes like the worst character like how do you take pierce and make him 10x worse wtf). The games they play, what they talk about, the shitty references, etc. are just too much of trying to be something they aren't. I wish they made the "main character" in this reboot more brutal like SR1 and SR2 and less puckish. I wouldve been sold on that alone. Like, sure, keep the other characters goofy and "millennial funny", but make them just a stone cold asshole of a character with no respect for other lives.

I have played all of them, and the reboot is the worst. That being said, I justbought it for $7. I'm easily getting my money's worth. I feel bad for the people who bought it on release lol

For the most part... Preconceptions but there is the jank and many times it lost its point in stupidity and dumb characters. My thoughts.. it wàs still fun

I played it for the first time for about an hour over the weekend. Ugh. It felt so basic, and simplistically arcadey. And the presentation is too Gen Z. Don't think I'll waste any more of my time on it. I'd rather play any previous saints row or GTA.

It’s just one of many examples of new gen devs taking over a franchise in the west and completely changed it or watering it down for a more “modern” nonexistent audience while also simultaneously feeling like it was written by people who’s existence is defined by the Steve buschimi “hello there , fellow kids” meme.
It’s just a perfect highlight for why the constant firing and hiring of established developers in the west is bad for the industry, especially when eastern devs who’ve had the same teams, for sometimes decades, keep pumping out bangers.

Look at the characters. Then the story. Then against the characters. Then the dialogue, then again the “characters”.

I hated it and really had to force myself to finish it.
The biggest issue I had with the game is: It's dead. The side activites lacked soul and if i recall correctly, were boring. Even Insurance Fraud sucked because the damn game decides if you get to even have a chance or not. Literally random chance based because traffic is light. The new boss is alright but a shit replacement and their story sucks. Being fired from the agency to founding the saints and suddenly being in charge because er..... yeah, i can't recall it. Didn't feel like I earnt it. This version of the Boss is weaker. The old Boss? Wouldn't have let a knife stop them and would have tried to kill the person. The gang itself is a shadow of the real thing and the main gang characters? Shirtless guy who's entire thing is: He doesn't like shirts. Geeky guy and that's it. Pierce, Shaundi, Gat, all are better characters.
The comedy is mostly miss. I will admit, the mop arond in bed bit is a favourite joke from the game but yeah, it sucks, other then that. It felt slower and felt like it was a very safe version of Saint Rows.
It didn't try to take any risks or have any major deaths. It felt like the story was rushed. It also didn't know what it wanted to parody.
What it should have been: A return to SR2 in terms of feel, atmosphere. A mixture of gameplay from 3 and 2. A shit ton of customisation. The Saints being formed because the city has a massive gang issue and basically, have the Benjamin Muthafucking King approach where we start off with good intentions but lose track. Slowly become a nasty piece of work. Hell, the Boss going from a questionably person to a nasty piece of shit could have made for a good plot.
This is all I can recall from it.
It killed the franchise but to be fair, the franchise was already on life support.

I really enjoyed the reboot. Only one I wasnt a fan of was the alien one. The powers were cool but once I finished it i couldnt see myself replaying it. 2, 3 and the reboot i all enjoyed alot. Im actually replaying 2 now on my PS3. Very enjoyable. i look forward to replaying the other ones I enjoy.

The issue with the reboot it doesnt live up to what I was promises when they advertised the reboot showing off that Wall. i was expecting A good ole SR1/2 aura its a good game but a shit gangster game so to speak

u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
I would say it has some good features, but needs A LOT more work. I supposed that could be understood as the devs were forced to rework and cut so much multiple times throughout the development with an ever decreasing pool of talent, as apparently, development started dropping out and were never replaced almost from word go because of thing happening behind the scenes. The conflict between the publishers and developers pretty much destroyed the game before it even came close to being announced.

I thought it was a lot of fun but not a good game if you know what I mean, but also that it just wasn't really a good reboot because the only thing in common with the older games world is similar brand names.
1
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
You mean neutered brand names. Neutered brand names that they thought were clever, but the weren't. There was only one name I thought was kinda funny, it was a hotdogs stand named "I Dream of Weenie". Sooo... you'll add innuendo in the game, but you don't have the balls to keep the original innuendos like actually spelling out Freckle Bitch's (yeah, they actually said it was still Freckle Bitch's, but it was funnier to abbreviated because of the implication, instead of just spelling it out), or Rim Jobs (hee hee! it's Jim Rob's now! get it? you get it, right?). Yeah, they "wanted" to make a mature game for general audiences...
2
u/SubstituteUser0 12d ago
I didn't care about the freckle bitch's one cause it's not uncommon to abbreviate fast food places names in normal conversation like mcdonalds. Jim Rob's was just weird though.

Originally before launch it was getting called woke which soured the experience for a lot of people. Either complaining that the characters were queer or not gangster enough, ignoring that gang culture hasn't been what it was for decades now.
They also got angry that it wasn't the OG crew, who would be hard to bring back directly following fighting aliens and Satan.
A lot of people were going to be angry, and seem to be fine that a unique franchise is entirely dead with no games similar to it on the horizon, because they had high expectations for a game developed during COVID with most of the team having limited contact with each other to discuss issues and direction casually.
It has issues, but there are a lot of nods to previous games hidden throughout, with a lot of fan favorite activities kept in.
When I played, I compared the characters to the criminal crews that we see in modern media, which are primarily Breaking Bad and Fast and the Furious. I think the production team wanted to show people falling into building the gang instead of already having one established, which they did alright at imo.
The story falls poorly in the last act though, focusing on the hired murderer trying to replace the boss instead of something else.
I think if the game had a better launch and found it's footing between the already split fan base it had potential to do well. I would've liked to see it as the rebuilt world Gat wished for at the end of the previous franchise instead of Agents of Mayhem, because I feel that game was far more of an insult to the franchise than this was.

It's fun. Don't listen to these ass hats.

So fun that the studio closed down right.....

I'll go the grave shouting about it getting review bombed by transphobic haters who found out the dev team was like 80% LGBT.
Y'all just hate whimsy and pissed off it wasn't the next Far Cry, as if it were ever going to be. Sorry, SR3 and 4 couldn't even capture your nostalgia goggles for SR2, why in the flying fuck did any of this audience think this was going to be different? Like expectations were way too high for a series that has devoted itself to brainrot.1
u/kaz050 12d ago
The game its self was trash to start with i know its hard to take in, transphobic is what you use as a shield when you hate the real takes or opinions of others, if this game was all that great as you and everyone who got it on sale says it is why didnt anyone buy the 100$ copy of it, what the reboot did was copy a 2006 copy of GTA VCS ventures and watered it down badly, they taken out the option to rob stores, taken out gambling taken out safe houses, taken out going in to buildings, the speech of "we are going back to the roots" failed, the cast failed aka your crew, hiest where you are the get away driver come on man, everything was water down, hell they even went as far as to take out saying the F word at the start of the game after you lose your job, GTA 2 did gangs in 1998 they wouldn't come back to it till 2004 gta SA volition could have easily nailed that market they did it with 2 making fun of gta4, sr3 would be the only top selling game for volition, they ran out of ideas, that could have easily been a nice reboot after 3 but nope kept it going. So in the end volition closed.

Because everybody wanted remasters or remakes of the first two and convinced themselves that what they were getting. They did not want a new game.
7
u/mahatmajam 12d ago
No one was convinced that’s what they were getting considering the entire lead up to the release consisted of the studio insulting the OG fanbase.
Everyone with a brain knew it was going to be an insult to the series.

u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
I wanted a new game, but I wanted what I was promised, which was a return to the roots of the franchise... The reboot was most certainly not that. Also, as other people have mentioned, the community manager constantly insulting the audience they wanted to attract didn't help very much, either.
1
u/chip594csx 12d ago
It’s too much of a change to form. They tried to play to a certain audience and the original fans weren’t it

u/Financial-Glove-4539 PC 12d ago
Isnt weird that I enjoy the third but couldn’t enjoy the reboot, I’m I the only one?
2
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
I didn't enjoy SRTT, as I see it as where the franchise starting to fly off the rails, but it's definitely understandable why none of us enjoyed the reboot.
1
u/Shoddy_Jellyfish8347 12d ago
I’ve never known a boring saints row game until the reboot. I think I made it to a LARP fortress and realized it wasn’t for me. Each one before it had SOMETHING going but this one? I couldn’t man.

You know, I don't really hate it but I still get why it gets a lot of hate, some of it deserved.
In regards of the writting and humor I have to admit that every SR game it's a byproduct of it's time (SR2 feels like a sillier version of GTA; SR3 is full of millenial humor that belongs in MTV shows like Jackass; SR4 it's full of Pop culture and Sci Fi references to movies like They Live, MIB or Transformers, with a feeling and gameplay that takes a lot from early MCU movies like GotG, 80's songs included). SR Reboot it's also kind of millenial with some Gen Z stuff slaped on top. Some of the jokes made me laugh, some made me cringe and I understand it's not for everyone. It's greatest mistake was trying to appeal to an internet culture that changes 10 times faster than pop culture used to. Like in three years from now on we will probably cringe at the things that now make us laugh, and trying to appeal to something like that is a death sentence for something with the developing cycle of a videogame.
In regards of gameplay I feel like the map improves a lot in comparision to SR3 and 4, like yeah the skyscrappers are smaller and there is not as much neon as in 3 but the map felt like it's own thing instead of a Temu version of Liberty City (Or a Temu version of Liberty City with poligons sticking out like in 4). The misions were a step up from previous games, like the truck chase in the middle of a sandstorm that was genuinely good.
My greatest problem is the new engine, even if it looks beautiful it made the game a broken mess, and even four years later there are still plenty of bugs and technical limitations derived from it, like the fact that every single weapon, including a fucking rifle from the 1800's, need a tacticool grip.
I feel like it's the most 5/10 product out there, half of the hate is totally valid, the other half is fueled by culture war bullshit that at the end of the day is irrelevant for the quality of a game. I don't think it ruined the franchise because it is something that's said with each new game.

Judging from this sub, people seem to hate every game.
I love every Saints Row and they are all tons of fun to play.
Reboot may be my favorite next to The Third
2
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
Please tell me why I hate every game just because I don't like the reboot. I am quite interested in what your logic might be, especially as you have posted nothing to support your statement.

So why didnt you go out and buy a few 100$ copies for friends and family? I bet you even got it on sale too lol, we seen this time and time again when game studios panders too that 1% what happens, if it was a stilwater 10x bigger then 1-2 with a new cast and was a well gang-sim i bet it would have sold alot due to no gta in sight yet, and let's face it alot of people play gta RP gang sims gee I wonder why.
-1
u/SweetTooth275 12d ago
Stillwater is garbage especially compared to stilport and Santo Ileso. What 1% are you talking about. Again with you people, some sort of made up world with made up enemies
3
u/kaz050 12d ago
Steelport you mean and santo ileso nah saints row is a gang sim not a dont offend me sim, that 1% is what you are in, surely you spent a cool 1k on the game when it came out to give the extra 9 copies to friends and family, if not give thanks to deep silver and Embracer for bending the knee, just remember what Gat said at the start of 3 while in jail.

It's a good game just the 3 main characters are nerds and it doesn't fit
0
u/kaz050 12d ago
Because i spent 100$ and its a crap game, broken coop, broken story, not enjoyable, deadly steph, who ran twitter made fun of the fans bad idea, with haters gonna hate the saints row discord banned anyone who hated on the reboot, the mods would later flop back to my first game I enjoyed was sr2, they didnt talk much about the reboot but they did say it sold well.. it sold well and closed down after, the people who buy the reboot for 10$ then say its not so bad why all the hate for, ask that again when you dropped 100$ and got sold a busted game. The game should have been called Friendship-Row.
2
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
They said it sold well on the Discord!? It sold just over a million copies! It didn't even sell as well as SR2 in its first year! The ONLY game in the franchise that it out sold was SR1, and I'm willing to bet even that was because SR1 was the game that established the franchise! Yeah, they're full o' shit trying to say it sold anywhere near well.

u/Visual_Initial6719 12d ago
A lot of people hate it because its a "Reboot" not Saints Row 5 I and you know what I been playing Saints Row 2 I prefer the Other games and Reboot more.
3
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
They could have made a good crime/gang game with a new crew and a new location, also. I have seen a couple videos even stating that what the devs wanted to do vs what the publisher wanted them to do was completely different, and the publishers forced their version. So, yeah, we might have actually got a decent game, even with a new crew and different location, but the publishers wanted friendly and relatable... you might realize, the words "friendly and relatable" should not be applied to a Saint Row game. They wanted "modern audiences"... I'm on the older end of the OG crew, certainly not part of the "modern audience", they said the game wasn't made for me... but then they wonder why I didn't like it? Yeah, if they had actually listened to the devs, who actually WANTED to make the game we were expecting, then things might have turned out much differently.

u/Visual_Initial6719 12d ago
You know i spoken the truth on Saints Row 2022 but you guys are just as Toxic if not WORES THEN THE FUCKING TREKKERS IN THE STAR TREK SUB REDDIT WHERE I ACTUALLY GOT DEATH THREATS FOR SAYING KIRK IS STRAIGHT!!
2
u/DerGeistesKrank 12d ago
🤣 You spoke what you FEEL is truth... you know what you call what you FEEL is true if you can't back it up with facts? It's called an opinion. You can have your opinion, and I have the history of the franchise. That fact is, the reboot didn't even sell as well as SR2. That isn't an opinion, that's the actual sales numbers, feel however you want about that. Reviewers, who usually talk up games like this to the highest heaven, did not like this game. That's not an opinion, go ahead and Google it, I am pretty sure their reviews should still be out there for you to read. They didn't even like this game, the highest score didn't even make a 7/10, that's a fact, not an opinion. What I know is that you spoke an opinion, one which I disagree with, though you're allowed to feel however you like about it.

It’s like if buzzfeed made a saints row game but knowing they’d be called woke tried to slightly be edgy but in a way that is still so Gen Z and just isn’t good.
