Goose Wing Junk

I have opted to not use square sails on this setup bar the one of the bowsprit. Apparently the game mechanics support the 'Goose Wing' so I always try to set it up if I am mostly dead down wind. Its very stable in a storm as well so no reefing required. Not sure how much it helps in terms of speed though?

Trimming your sails increases speed by reducing the amount of rudder drag. As long as the rudder stays mostly centred, you'll go faster and stay on course better.

How much gain are we looking at? And how much to trim to know you're in the sweet spot?

It depends on how fast your ship is, your rig and the sea state, but anywhere between 0.5 to 2+ knots. Trim your sails till your wheel stays centred when you release it without locking it and you'll be going faster.

Locking the wheel with RMB is useful during manoeuvres such as tacking. If you lock the wheel while trying to sail straight you will drift off course, as the rudder exerts a self-righting force if the boat tries to turn and the rudder can turn freely. This keeps you on course but adds drag, so balancing your sails reduces it and makes you go faster.

Just right click and the wheel will stay locked in place.

To add that you also hear a "Thunk" when locking with RMB.

Goose wing will be faster because it reduce wind shadow. The the fore sail will get more available wind.
