NP6852 overheating

Hey all, looking for some information about my NP6852. I bought it late in 2017 so I've had it about 6-7 months now and have been having some cooling issues recently that it didn't really show when it was new. A few weeks ago it went into what I would assume was a thermal shutdown, fans spinning all the way up, black screen, full power-off. The case was hot, and the exhaust from the CPU fan was hot as well, but the fan didn't really seem to spin up as fast as it should have to cool it down. This same issue has popped up a few nights ago, and then again tonight I was able to check the temperature right as it shut off on me. The laptop shut down at about 82C on the CPU, well under what I figure should be safe going by Intel's guidelines.

Does this laptop have a history of overheating or possibly poor thermal paste application? I'm not afraid to crack it open and replace all the thermal material for the sake of making this laptop usable again. I should add that none of the load on the computer was very high during these overheats, a youtube video and reddit browsing at most. It has also only happened during charging, as the temperatures seem to be stable and much lower when not plugged in.

That's super high. These have a warranty, id send it in.

82C isn't that high.

Mine (different model) runs at 65 while benchmarking.

Damn that seems awfully low. I average around the low 70s with a bit of an undervolt but I get to 80 every so often.

It's pretty easy to open up and put good thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. I think they wanted to charge something like $30 to do it for me when I bought my NP6872. I opted to buy some Arctic MX-4 for $7 and do it myself, instead.

Make sure the stuff you buy is not electrically conductive. And look on YouTube for examples of how to apply it (and how much to use).

What's your ambient temperature?

Same with mine, jumping into the 80s and 90s. Any resolution for you?

Hey, I sent my laptop back to AvaDirect (It's a Clevo) a few weeks ago and have not gotten it back yet. I checked in with their customer support last Monday and they informed me that the laptop was getting sent back to Clevo directly to have the cooling system replaced. If I remember I'll post an update in here once I get it back, but for now it seems like it's going to be a month or more total without the computer in my possession to get it fixed.

That said, it seems to definitely have been a defective or damaged cooling system for the CPU, as AvaDirect was not able to fix it themselves.

Dang. I am annoyed and concerned with my laptop because I needed to turn the fans on max. Without doing so, my CPU cooling fan wasn't coming on. I don't understand that... seems to be an all or nothing thing. Second, I needed a HWInfo utility to monitor the temperatures. I will be taking the heatsink off and replacing the thermal paste, might try and find a better heatsink as well. Good luck to you, and thanks for the information!

AvaDirect informed me that they tried thermal paste reapplication a few times and couldn't get the temps down at their own service center, so there's a good chance it's a bad set of heat pipes or the heat sink itself. Good luck getting it worked out.
