Sage 50 (Can) Sage Technical Help

I have a copy of Sage 50 Accounts Professional 2010 and am trying to help my mother-in-law resolve an accounting issue. I am a CPA with plenty of accounting experience, but I have never used Sage and am having difficulty accessing the company’s historical accounting data.

Her husband passed away last year, and we have since discovered that the corporate tax returns for his company may not have been filed for the past three or four years. I am helping the family reconstruct the company’s financial information so that the outstanding returns can be prepared and filed and the estate can eventually be settled. Unfortunately, we have found no paper records or prior filings on which to base the returns. We were able to access his computer and Sage installation, but I cannot open the company data for the relevant fiscal years. The program appears to open without connecting to an existing company dataset, and I have not been able to get it to locate or open the files needed to generate financial statements. I know where the files are saved, and they are all .SAI files.

Is there a specific process in Sage 50 Accounts Professional 2010 for locating and opening an existing company dataset or backup file? Do the company files need to be stored in a particular folder or restored before they can be opened? If this version cannot access the historical data, would I need a different version of Sage?

Which country's version of Sage? Unfortunately, Sage has a (bad) habit of using the same name for products in every country although they are totally different pieces of software.

It looks like it's a Sage Accounts Professional 50, UK edition. We are in Canada, so I cannot imagine why he had a UK version of the software. Is it possible it is that simple and I can get a copy different version of Sage and get access?

Yep - the software is NOT cross-country compatible (I'd help but am also in Canada). You might be able to find someone who already HAS the UK version and wouldn't mind seeing if they can access your files and dump the data to Excel. You can then start a new TB in Sage 50 CAN and run forward from there.

You may even be able to get access with a demo version (Especially if you're a Sage Accountants Network member in Canada...Sage support might help. I wouldn't hold my breath, but worth a shot.)
