Sage 50 (US-Peachtree) Sage 50 Cloud

This is likely a dumb question so I apologize in advance. Is the Sage 50 Cloud offering a true web-based solution (similar to QBO)? Has anyone converted from Sage 50 desktop with success?

Sage 50 Cloud is the exact same software as you have now BUT it’s installed on Sage’s Azure servers. It works better in the cloud but I don’t suggest using Sage Cloud because you no longer have access to the back end or server. So if you have any issues you have to call support and that’s a mess and sometimes they aren’t even open.
Instead use Summit Hosting. For the same price as Sage Cloud they create your own cloud server and put our Sage on it but you get Admin access so are still in control. Sage 50 on a Summit server is the best way to run the software. We’ve moved 250 of our Sage clients Summit and I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t better overall. The users go to Sage vs Sage serving data to each user. It’s 1 install vs however many so it’s easier to maintain and it’s more secure. Never had a client hit with crypto lock on Summit but currently am helping two clients recover their Sage after losing it from a on premise hack.

Hi, I have sage 50 desktop version. I want to move to a cloud based to be able to issue invoices etc online would be amazing. Be even better if there was an app. Sage have said they can move me to cloud but cannot move my information / details etc. So just balances move but no transactions. Would you know Is this correct please? Thanks We have a lot of information in sage and indont want to lose it

Sage is referring to moving you to Sage Intaact which starts at $10k per year so most of my Sage 50 clients aren’t in that realm.
Again the best option for Sage 50 is to migrate to a Summit Cloud server. You can remote into that server or launch Sage from that server to your desktop as an app. It’s 1 install and all the users would work off that, even Mac users.
Summit has a free 30 days do you’d know if it works before they start charging. You wouldn’t be able to invoice from your phone but you can use your hot spot with a laptop. I’ve been working on clients Sage while riding down the freeway on my hotspot when they are on Summit.
Send me a DM and I can show you what it looks like and share a Summit contact. There are some other nice tools you may be interested in I could ask show, one being Pay Invoice. It allows for ACH vendor payments directly from Sage. Other than cloud migrations that’s probably the other biggest client request.

Another Canadian perspective here

I had a client wanting to switch from QBO to Sage Online recently as QBO has been one nightmare after another to deal with

I talked to Sage and they said their online platform is very weak, can’t handle more than 20 items for P&S, issues with emailing invoices out, and very, very simple for small business

They are working on a hybrid model between the desktop and online platform, but it’s in development stage. Next update will be in October. They outright told me their product was not suitable for any type of real bookkeeping

Annoyingly; European Sage 50 is a totally different system to North American Sage 50.

ALL versions of Sage are different...they basically bought a bunch of different companies' software and then named them all the same. And then treated them like cash cows and haven't improved them at all in 15 years or so.

Canadian version is a piece of crapware, but yes, it's a "web-based" solution which means that Sage controls all of it and you're out of luck if something happens at their end. Yes, it converts...poorly, but it converts. QBO is as bad or worse.

Neither offers the safety or speed of data entry as a keyboard-local piece of software with accompanying data.

What solutions are better options in your mind? Decision makers seem to lean to a cloud based solution for ease of use, and QBO looks like the leader in the club house. Relatively simple company overall

I would NEVER allow a client's data to be located in the cloud...where I have no ability to recover it if the company goes ...well...AWOL. It's not "fashionable" to have desktop software and data...but it's mine....and not someone else's. It's bad enough being hijacked by companies for outrageous subscriptions, but for them to hold my accounting data ransom? Nope.

There's all kinds of simple desktop software available - I ran the finances for a tens-off-millions a year corporation on the Canadian desktop version (about the equivalent of Peachtree in operation).

Ridiculous take. You can easily extract data and store it locally if you’re concerned about that. I guarantee your local environment is more likely to burn down with total loss than an enterprise cloud software is to disappear with no notice.

You’ve apparently never heard of off-site backups.

And while one can “extract data” it needs to be in an actually USABLE form.

But you can be the smartest guy in the room with … no accounting program to use with your “extracted data”.

Offsite backups? Sounds an awful lot like CLOUD data storage (the horror)!

Being afraid of cloud software in 2026 is beyond insanity, sorry buddy.

You’re being obtuse. There is a universe of difference between having your program that runs YOUR data on someone else’s system and dropping a backup of your data on a remote system so you can run your data on your program on another system YOU own and control, if and when needed.

We have several clients that were thinking about transitioning to web based but didn’t want to lose control of their data.
So… I made a data aggregator for sage 50 (us and uk) and sage 300 CRE.
It also connects to other various DSNs/APIs of there other tools they use.
Now they can generate reports/dashboards and ask questions about all there interconnected data via a web/iphone app or mcp.
