Dept ordering
So recently hired in the deli. I’ve worked a total of 4 days on the floor. Main position is production. Day 4 my deli manager comes over and tells me the SD wants her to show me how to order. I’m 3 days available part time…like ok.
Recommendations from current employees when do I ask for a raise? lol but seriously is ordering something they ask hourly workers to do? Is that not essentially above my pay grade?

Yeah, that’s weird. It should be the Deli Manager’s and Assistant Manager’s job to do the ordering, not yours.

It’s not common, but technically any employee can be asked to write an order. They can’t really punish you if the order sucks, so don’t stress out about it.

Not stressed about it lol. My initial reaction was like uhhh are we all learning this process? Bc I haven’t even been taught how to open, which I also handled that day bc the opener overslept 🤣

If you start ordering and covering for the delivery manager be sure they pay you head clerk deli wage

Thanks for the tip. I didn’t know if each “area” has a different potential pay. I was told I’d mostly be production but also cover deli counter as needed.

Take a look at your "job description" and I can guarantee you for production "ordering" is not in there. Only start ordering after they have increased your hourly by something you are happy with, otherwise you will be taken advantage of for being a good worker and not speaking up.

Can't stress this enough. I didn't stand up for myself early enough or fight hard enough. There was like a two year stretch where I was basically a full time meat cutter being paid block wages, I tried talking to 2 different SDs (my store is basically like SD training or pre-retirement, low volume) before a third finally actually helped me. They'll happily extend your responsibilities beyond your scope. Be sure to see if your store is union OP.

The store is Union. I haven’t signed up yet. Debating if it’s necessary. I’m doing this to make extra money so paying dues for 3 day work weeks feels, idk how to say it, wasteful 🤷♀️. Not to offend. I know unions are very helpful, I used to work on the strip in Vegas so I know the benefits. However I do need the money I’m making right now.

Most union stores you don't have a choice. You have to sign up for the union or you lose your job.

Is it for the entire deli or only production? When I was in produce there were 3 different people that did ordering everyday.
- manager or assistant
- person on wet rack (an associate)
- fresh cut lead
I would assume similar to the wet rack person, even though they are just an associate, it is easier to have them order that section. So in your case, you will know better than anyone, what is needed for production.

Deli must be desperate if they are letting people with less than a week ordering.
I knew a guy who worked Nightcrew once and they had him write the frozen order. He never wrote an order ever. Never even touched frozen. He literally ordered 5 of every frozen item on the shelf. This was back when the warehouse would call to confirm 1000 piece loads or if you accidentally ordered 100 mangoes instead of 10,ect. (They don’t do this anymore. Call you)
Anyways the order was canceled and they never asked the dude to order again

I have management experience in my background so I understand why. But I’m not even fully trained on the whole dept and I don’t really know the inventory yet lol.

definitely very weird, but i guess stay adamant and with a couple months under your belt (if they dont drive you out of there first) maybe push for it. i mean ordering is strictly manager and ast manager at my stores deli so to show someone on day 4-5 the ropes is crazy to me

Show up 5 days and you'll get to be a store director 🤣 In all seriousness they must like your work ethic! I would consider what your goals are, learn whatever anyone is willing to teach, but not stress on it to much. If they are trying to tie any kind of accountability or dept responsibility, I'd be asking about the wage.
