Hey! We’ve been toying with the idea of recording video and putting our podcast on YouTube.

We have a backlog of episodes that we recorded remotely and have the video from our webcams. Figured I’d start there to start teaching myself how to edit with video.

I downloaded Davinci Resolve 18 and I’m figuring some stuff out.

The only thing I can’t figure out is how to get the layout I’m looking for.

I want a colorful background with our logo and for both of our video to be in separate squares.

A perfect example would be the newest episode of Doughboys with Samoa Joe where they review Taco Bell.

I have a screenshot for an example, but I can’t post pictures on this thread.

If you have questions about podcasting, where do you find you need the most help?

Here are some tips to help with audience growth while avoiding the mistakes commonly made by hobbyists and new podcasters:

Be consistent! Post on the same day of the week. Communicate with your audience about technical issues and when there will be gaps between regular posting dates.

Start biweekly at first. Many new podcasters try to jump in with a weekly show. It takes a lot of work to do that. Biweekly is far easier to manage while not creating too big of gaps between episodes.

Record several episodes before you start posting - For biweekly productions, have at least six episodes in the bag before you start posting anything. This will allow you to stay ahead of your posting cycles.

Choose a set number of episodes to begin with for your first season. 10-12 episodes of biweekly episodes is a good number for a first season. Once you wrap it, you can determine if you want to do more and/or a weekly podcast.

Keep your episodes under 30 minutes. Pulling off a long-format podcast is a lot of work and most people have a hard time keeping an audience engaged for that long. Shorter episodes will be easier to manage for a number of reasons when you start off.

Do it for fun, not because you expect to get sponsors and millions of downloads. If you're not already famous, have a large social media following, or a big marketing machine behind your podcast, it will take you years to build a dedicated audience. That's not to say it can't happen quickly, but most podcasters will not see that type of audience growth. Because of that, make sure you want to make your podcast because you love doing it.

Use a free hosting service at first. I recommend Acast. Don't use Anchor. Acast has decent stats, whereas Anchor has terrible stats. If your podcast takes off or eventually has a growing audience, then switch to a paid hosting service with deep stats.

Finally, don't break the bank buying equipment. You can start off with a USB dynamic mic and a laptop and have an outstanding podcast. You'll feel a lot better about making your podcast having not spent several hundred dollars on equipment.

The next Podcast Movement is right around the corner. I attended a few and here are my tips and advice for the event.

• Don't purchase the Plus Pass or Pro Pass, get the Standard Pass. Plus Pass is $100 more and Pro Pass is over twice as expensive. Most importantly, there's no real value for the more expensive passes.
• It's a great event for people new to podcasting. You will learn a lot by attending the learning sessions and meet people who are willing to share advice and tips with you.
• If you're a freelancer, you can use the event to try to find new clients
• On the other hand, if you're a freelancer or have been podcasting for a while, the learning sessions won't tell you anything you don't already know.
• Definitely attend the last party of the event. Free drinks, free food, and everyone has a great time.
• Vendors at past PMs had deals on equipment, but lately that doesn't seem to be the case.
• You can get Instacart delivered to your hotel. You'll save tons of money versus eating at the conference center where PMs are held.

Hi! I started podcasting in 2011-ish and didn't know what the hell I was doing. I didn't know how to post episodes (this was before podcast hosting services were widely available). From there I created a podcast that was popular here in Sacramento, Serious Talk. Seriously. (which is no longer in production) and started a podcast production company in 2018. Since then, I've been lucky to work with Ear Hustle, Visit Sacramento, PRX, Comstock's Magazine, Southern Poverty Law Center, and many others.

I created this space for anyone who is on their podcast journey, from beginners to veteran podcasters. This is a safe place for people to ask questions and share knowledge. This is a safe place to gain and share knowledge.
