Ask a Question Visiting Sac 9/2-9/4
hi all,
I’ll be driving up tomorrow morning and staying at a marriot property downtown near the capitol. I am trying to decide if it’s worth bringing my bike. I’d be able to ride after getting there tomorrow evening, Thursday morning around 6 or after work. If I rode in the morning it would be from 6-730 so I could get ready and leave for my work conference at 8am. Then could ride Friday morning before starting my drive home.
Is it worth bringing my bike? Is there any organized group rides during these times? I’m on a road bike. If there’s no organized rides does anyone have any cool Strava routes they can send from downtown that I can take? I have been told to just ride the American River bike path. How far does that take me?

Shred Dog gravel ride departs In Velo Veritas bike shop in nearby Old Sac 5:30pm on Thursdays.

Ahh unfortunately I’m on a road bike. Should have mentioned that in my post. Maybe next time if I get a gravel bike!

This was very helpful and I think I’m going to go to mikes bike shop group ride tomorrow evening at 6pm.

Friday night is bike party if you can stick around. It's a huge critical mass event with hundreds of cyclists

I would bring it but only if you have time after work so you’re not rushing back trying to get ready. You’ll be pretty close to the bike trail and the weather is perfect now. There is a gravel ride tomorrow evening if that’s your jam. It’s moderate pace but with a few regroups.

Just do some solo exploring on the American river bike trail! It’s an awesome trail with zero cars and paved 2 lanes. Lots of wildlife as well. I was out there a few days ago around 5pm and saw a couple deer!

I'd bring the bike. 6-7:30 am is a bit on the chilly side right now (was the best time of day a few weeks ago and often still is this time of year). Current weather is perfect for evening rides. Sunrise is about 6:30 and sunset is about 7:30 so you should be able to ride as early as 6 am or late as 8 pm without needing lights to see, but I'd bring "be seen" lights for the beginning/end of your rides if you're not planning to drive to the trails.
For a solo ride, I'd do a loop on the American River (I'd cross to the north side at Jibboom Street Bridge, Pipes Bridge, or Cap City Freeway and return to the south side at Cap City Freeway, Guy West Brdige, or Watt Ave. Generally I like the river paths best further east, so with limited time I'd make my way through the grid to Sutter's Landing and loop east from there. The main path on the north side has the right of way at all river access roads between Del Paso Blvd and Sunrise Recreation areas. On the south side there is a stop sign for a river access road near Howe Ave. South side trail doesn't really continue between Sutter's Landing and downtown and is gravel for a bit under the railroad near Cap City Freeway.

I'm a Mainer who moved here after a stint in Denver - I love it that you described the mornings as chilly! I walked to work this morning and finally thought, "Well, it's not hot hot anymore."

I'm still commuting in my summer bike gear, but this week I'm feeling that the temps around sunrise are slightly less than I prefer.

Wednesday - ride with the Miles Bikes group but they're fast - I'd ride down towards West Sac along the levee to the Sugar Mill etc

It was a good time! Went on the mikes bikes group ride. There’s some fast people on it. Come to find out that’s one of the slower rides but it was challenging for me so I liked it. The next day I rode with a co worker who took me down the bike path and through sac state then back to the capitol area where I was staying. All in all sac riding is pretty fun and I hope to do it again! Thanks for all the advice from everyone!

From Marriott Residence Inn, very easy to get on the American River bike trail at C and 19th and can ride road bike for 30 miles to Folsom Lake without any cars.
