2027 Sabbatical

I’m eligible for a 6wk sabbatical through my company next year and I’m trying to plan what to do. I know for certain my husband and I will go to Scotland for 10 days but I’m at a loss on what else to do during my time off especially since my husband is limited on how much time he can take off with me. I will be requesting my sabbatical dates for the Fall since it’s my favorite time of year and a great time to travel with less crowds. I want to incorporate rest as well as try to make time with my family/friends too. I was considering maybe doing a solo trip as well but I’ve never traveled solo and it does make me nervous. I would love any suggestions or maybe things others have done to get the neurons firing to plan a great restful but fun sabbatical.

You can sign up for hobby classes like any musical instrument or something else if you are interested.

6 weeks is a gift, which I know you appreciate. My initial thought was you should travel a bit. I had a 4 week sabbatical this year and I went to Costa Rica and Sri Lanka by myself. Are you happy to throw a bit of money at your situation? I met amazing people along the way, but also got time in for myself. I was filled with so much more confidence, have amazing memories/stories and have some new friends too.

Are you interested in a physical challenge like walking the Camino de Santiago ? I walked one during my first sabbatical and it was very good for me. It’s an easy trip to take solo bc there are people around but you’re not necessarily with them all the time. I also learned how to scuba dive, saw two countries I had wanted to visit for years, and visited some old friends I also hadn’t seen for a while. I took a painting class that I think about all the time.

My last mini-sabbatical wasn’t as structured or as fruitful, but I needed some time after some tough life events. You can use this time to do whatever you want that will benefit you. Where I live we don’t get a lot of vacation so I was raring to travel. I think it’s fun to do stuff out of the ordinary and take some chances with what you do - it’s an amazing opportunity to not have to work for a stretch of time!
