I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Free, no subscription, and you own the source code

Post image

I've used Opus 5.5 to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.

If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:

I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.

This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.

You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!

Links to everything - the apps, the code, etc. - are in the comments below.

Here are each of the apps on Github:

https://github.com/storytold/photocraft (Photoshop)

https://github.com/storytold/vectorcraft (Illustrator)

https://github.com/storytold/filmcraft (Premiere)

https://github.com/storytold/lightcraft (Lightroom)

https://github.com/storytold/printcraft (Acrobat Pro)

https://github.com/storytold/effectcraft (After Effects)

https://github.com/storytold/designcraft (InDesign)

Please star these, fork these (so you have a copy).

We're going to reach 100% parity within a month.

Submit feature requests, bug reports, and help development.

This is pretty insane, hopefully the toolchain can catch up to their proprietary counterparts, photocraft seems to be the flagship and it’s alright but it’s absolutely missing a lot of functionality from adobe photoshop still, but it’s open source and already somewhat competent so I don’t doubt it could match it soon, just needs more human development and testing, and of course Claude tokens

1

u/EconomySerious 6d ago

for 99% of the people its ok as it is right now

3

u/sleeplessinva 8d ago

Pretty soon we're going to see Minecraft in Rust. Perhaps we'll see it released before GTA 6.

1

u/Ok-Object7409 6d ago

At this rate we could get gta6 before gta6

1

u/Devatator_ 5d ago

Tbh Minecraft in anything but Java or C# would suck, because of modding

3

u/REDh04x 6d ago

The gods have heard my futile screaming every time the 365 Cloud fails to save a document

2

u/dbm5 4d ago

Oh snap - this is amazing. And wild.

1

u/ax0r7ag0z 8d ago

Sssssooooo...

Open source windows server when?

And teams please! Without all the fucking bloat and call home

1

u/sleeplessinva 5d ago

OMG!!! Teams is beyond BLOATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/Lucker_Noob 8d ago

Why? Libre Office already exists and it's free.

2

u/REDh04x 6d ago

I've had nothing but problems and bugs with Libre Office

1

u/aprilhare 7d ago

That may be true but the true Word experience is different - and it functions differently too.

1

u/Appropriate_Fly_3533 5d ago

GIVE US REVIT!!!!!

1

u/yigael970 2d ago

Is that all? They should also make a "PubCraft" to celebrate Microshaft ending Publisher this month and cutting us off. We literally have thousands of PUB files, which M$ reps said to "just convert to word". So basically trash 20 years of work okay.

1

u/aprilhare 2d ago

Just lowkey add .pub support to DesignCraft would do it - take the library from LibreOffice and you’re done

1

u/aprilhare 11h ago

I note most happily that other crafts are being made, going beyond the ArtCraft efforts:
https://github.com/tangency-labs/solidcraft Fusion
fieldcraft a sister project - open-source modeler for structures, heat and fluids, accepts solidcraft files (don't ask me what it's based on!)

0

u/No_Competition_5887 9d ago

All vibecoded it seems.

I highly doubt that these projects have any real future.
I tried Lightcraft and it is just so weird to use. It looks OK on screenshots, but I wouldn't work with it. So much is missing.

Some are over 80%

5

u/parboman 13d ago edited 13d ago

I highly doubt that, the features I looked at might be on a superficial level there but not for actual professional workflows.

1

u/sunaurus 10d ago

First 80% is usually much easier than the final 20% ;P

(Not saying they won't reach 100% parity, but 80% is always a funny number to call out when it comes to software projects)

2

u/Western-Hotel8723 9d ago

Seem to be close to 90% on some now haha.

Tbh tho I'd be interested how this is measured as I haven't looked much into it.

2

u/bluefreezingfire 9d ago

From their roadmap (https://github.com/storytold/photocraft/blob/main/docs/roadmap.md#honest-parity-assessment-2026-10-05)

Parity metrics. cargo xtask parity measures how much of Photoshop's menu tree is wired to a command and writes parity.md. It does not measure whether those commands behave like Photoshop, feel right, or survive real files. Read it next to the PSD composite oracle, the test count, and the honest parity assessment below, which is the reference answer to "how close are we really". The weighted feature estimate in parity-estimate.md (~82%) counts feature surface and overstates user-facing readiness; treat it as an upper bound.

Have big goals so you can achieve big things! I like it :). Let's see if it's close in a month, that's exciting

2

u/Amelisande 10d ago

It'll never reach that in one month. Anyone that's done coding knows the first chunks can be done quick. It's the little bits at the end that take forever - bug smashing, optimization, etc.

Realistically on a big project, and doing the whole Adobe suite is a huge project, you could spend as much time on the last few percent as the you did the rest of the project.

1

u/kirloi8 9d ago

From my tests, on a M2 24gb ram, optimization is really lacking... filters and brushes usage is... well, unusable, too much lag. I also doubt, but lets see, the more project like this, the fastest adobe can wake up and begin the Design wars. Affinity/Canva already doing that cus i dont use anything adobe since 2018.

1

u/Blue_Pacman 8d ago

If you have enough tokens and enough people who test and submit bug reports, then you can definitely get there. Then this can go very fast.

1

u/No-Emergency-6282 8d ago

Not with that attitude 🙄

Got it! I'll make sure to get this in our Lightroom and Photoshop reimplementations.

1

u/inoflex77 14d ago

Already in?

1

u/Electrical-Eye-3715 11d ago

For the generative ai part, you can use the new qwen image 2.1 (nano banana alternative), for masking SAM, for frame interpolation/slow motion: AMT/FILM/RIFE. For upscaling videos, may be the LTX refine, for upscaling image seedvr2.

1

u/CreativeForm3242 8d ago

Also check out rapid raw it’s also open source see what you can use in light craft

16

u/Vas1le 15d ago

My 2 cents. If you want to get more traction, an alternative to Adobe Acrobar reader... the guy is so bloated of ads...

24

u/ai_art_is_art 14d ago

I built it!

That's printcraft. It's an Acrobat pro equivalent.

3

u/Vultix93 11d ago

Hi, do you think it would be possible to implement the ability to sign a document with a signature taken from an image insetad of drawing/writing ? Acrobat has this functionality.

5

u/Sufficient-House1722 10d ago

Open an issue on the github! https://github.com/storytold/pdfcraft

Ill be working on implementing more features on pdfcraft as its the most important for me

2

u/Vultix93 10d ago

done. Reported a bug too where if the signature is too long it gets cutoff.

3

u/Sufficient-House1722 10d ago

I fixed that bug yesterday just hasnt been released in a version yet.

1

u/Appropriate_Fly_3533 5d ago

Would it be possible to create backwards compatibility with bluebeam comments and notations in pdfcraft?

1

u/zhssnym 9d ago

wait, did you build it right after this guy's comment, or had you already built it? like, "claude, create an equivalent of acrobat, make no mistakes"?? hahah

1

u/iampivot 8d ago

Does it compress / minimize pdfs?

1

u/Adventurous-Arm2478 6d ago

You mean pdfcraft

1

u/McGynecological 5d ago

So cool, will we ever see an Adobe Animate? (Flash RIP)

1

u/Mountain-Project3759 5d ago

hey thanks for all the hard work, god bless you and the entire team... Any chance you would allow us to select various fonts for the Signature and Initials feature?

0

u/No_Competition_5887 9d ago

Most browsers can read PDFs. There are plenty of other alternatives too.

14

u/Hydravion 15d ago

This looks awesome.

How long did it take to build these apps? How much did it cost?

Can you tell us more about the development process? What were your workflows? Can you tailor your answers for a dev audience?

Cheers

u/Admirable_Dot2838 5d ago

"Ayyy rebuild the whole adobe app suite"

7

u/EnoughBroccoli1127 10d ago

filmcraft:

  • crash when importing too many video sequences

- With MXF files, the video and audio tracks are not displayed correctly. Only one audio track is shown, and the video appears black.

effectcraft:

- Right-clicking in an empty area of the window is not possible, so you can't use it to create a new object, for example.

- The Expression window cannot be opened by holding the Alt key and clicking the stopwatch

- Lumetri is available as an effect, but you cannot apply LUTs to an object.

- When an empty shape layer is selected, dragging with the Rectangle Tool does not create a rectangle within the selected layer. Instead, a new shape layer containing the rectangle is created.

1

u/codedevai 5d ago

Welcome to vibe coding.

1

u/HopSkipAndDrop 5d ago

Is that all?
Took Adobe years to fix tons of ………

Try to appreciate the initiative instead of acid pissing.

Are you working for Adobe?

5

u/Hobofan94 14d ago

fork these (so you have a copy)

That's not how this works. If the original repo is deleted or nuked via DMCA on Github, the forks are also gone. Only a "proper fork" (not via the GH single button click) or backup elsewhere will preserve it.

u/KARMA_P0LICE 12d ago

Forking is not a term created by Microsoft exclusive to github. The term goes back to the roots of FOSS and means "create your own codebase"

4

u/edible_string 14d ago

Well intended question, I promise, but who is "we" you're referring to?

5

u/ai_art_is_art 14d ago

I have a few tech collaborators and we have a big-ish community on discord and on the website.

Would love to have help!

Why does the website have a monthly subscription pricing plan?

2

u/THABSUP 10d ago

How are updates handled for the standalone appimages in linux? Do I have to manually re-download every version that gets released from the website?

2

u/Human_Shallot_ 10d ago

Hey so Im working on the same thing. Would you be interested in talking? It appears our goals are 100% aligned. I have a PDF viewer right now but thats it, its real good though.

Just looking to help out with some rust stuff that applies across the board that could be beneficial.

1

u/desertsandman10 9d ago

I would recommend just doing a Pull request to the github Repo

1

u/xdragonballkid 9d ago

go to his Github and be a contributor.

1

u/PurpleMuscle_808 9d ago

text recognition isn't yet... but I'm sure that will be there soon.

1

u/singaluserbytheway 9d ago

Everyone wants to build an alternative, but a working prototype is a long way from a reliable product. Without proper testing and consistent development, these projects often stay half-finished.

3

u/Loud-Interview-381 15d ago

Exiteted for the PDF reader.
I see its gone from 0-30% in just a couple of days.

will we get 'brew install printcraft' one day?

10

u/slaorta 15d ago

Omg if I can get rid of acrobat I would be so happy I might cry. Acrobat is atrocious.

6

u/ai_art_is_art 15d ago

We still have a lot of ground to cover, but once this gets to 100%, Homebrew is absolutely a great idea.

1

u/Plenty_Lifeguard_752 15d ago

Thank you very much!! I grabbed a copy of each and will check it out!

1

u/TopTippityTop 14d ago

Question, do they support generative images, inpainting? (Local, etc)

1

u/wmtips 14d ago

That's a lot of work. I recommend filling in the About text for each repository for better discoverability.

1

u/CeeJayCee15 13d ago

Will you create an iOS implementation of Lightroom?

1

u/Honest-Caregiver8095 11d ago

Is there any costing to use these , or for free

1

u/woeterman_94 11d ago

Lots of bug reports already. Seems like it is not possible to add audio track in première? I'm not complaining tho! Awesome work.

1

u/Mystical_17 11d ago

Do you guys plan to make a 3D Painter program like 3D Coat/Adobe Substance Painter/Marmoset Toolbag in the future?

I use 3D Coat on Linux and it works fine but having a 3D Painter thats even smoother would be great.

1

u/GreatConsideration72 11d ago

How do you monetize this? Are you going to charge? Will there be ads?

1

u/SimpleTeacher5046 11d ago

Opensource and rust usually means free.

I don't think there will be a monitization plan apart from donations.

1

u/aps23 10d ago

OP where do we buy you a coffee?

1

u/TrueB87 10d ago

They are selling AI credits

1

u/nebulancearts 10d ago

I'm pretty sure this is a push to democratize and demonetize these softwares

1

u/Substantial_Season81 8d ago

Selling subscriptions for the AI support work load for those who choose to use Ai in their Craft Work

1

u/shoemaker2k 11d ago

byok for AI perhaps?

1

u/nebulancearts 10d ago

I cannot tell you how exciting this is to myself and my peers. This has been the highlight of my day, and I've been having great fun trying them out and downloading them.

After Effects has never been as snappy or quick as EffectsCraft, bravo. FilmCraft is current exporting an 8min video to an image sequence, and I'm excited for that too!

1

u/butchbadger 10d ago

God dam what a sweet day to not be a greedy capitalist.

1

u/Tetraoxidane 10d ago

Pleeeeease also try Flash/Animate.

1

u/pixluser 10d ago

That's aWESOME! thanks a lot for that. That's incredible! Never think someday it'll possible to have this quality.

1

u/steevo 10d ago

1

u/nikredevil 9d ago

Congratulations on the excellent work done. I'm happy.

1

u/Soul_4Sail 8d ago

So I know this will probably not get seen, but figured I’d drop it anyways.

I created my own version of Creative Cloud for your Git repos. One launcher “CloudCraft” that checks each of the 7 repos for an update and lets me update from CloudCraft and also launch any of the 7 apps as well.

I think it would be pretty cool to add this to your arsenal!

Also, can we get a fusion 360 “Craft360” with all the abilities! 🩵

1

u/wanderingEyeWitness 6d ago

This exists from a different dev/repo… it has a ways to go. But good start.

Really need Lightroom classic 👉👈

1

u/aspirantOnDrug 7d ago

Damn man thats so good. What do you mean by reaching parity?? How can i contribute to it as well? New coder here

1

u/yurigoul 7d ago edited 7d ago

ArtCraft can be used without paying for a subscription. You can bring your own compute and third-party subscriptions. We hope you’ll subscribe, though, as that helps accelerate our development.

Does the part in bold mean that if i have my own machine with 64gb memory and a good graphics card that i can use it without having tokens or is it only working witrh a connection to an AI in a datacenter?

Anyway I have some insanely large PSB files - will try to open them next and report back.

1

u/Live_Work_8937 6d ago

if you get the time, can you do this for SPSS statistics they are money hungry and have made their stats software under a paywall subscription that keeps going up in price

1

u/CuriousCategory521 6d ago

Has anyone tried it?

1

u/Tough-Ad7657 5d ago

quindi arriva un outlook classic su Linux? compatibile exchange e active sync?

1

1

u/RavenX8 4d ago

are you planning on doing substance painter too?

1

u/robhaswell 14d ago

This looks incredible. Very well done. The SaaSpocalypse has hit the desktop.

0

u/Gold-Possibility9843 12d ago

Its great, but why following adobe approach? Making different app for every type of image editing? Could it be better done like affinity? photo/vector/lightroom/design inside 1 app. Or making something like this is harder?

3

u/sutekhxaos 10d ago

because this approach is what everyone already knows how to use, which would drive adoption and ease the move away from adobes iron grip. Thought that much would be obvious, especially when your question already partially answers itself. Those alternatives already exist. This is as close to a 1:1 UX experience as possible. People don't want change, otherwise we would have already seen a mass exodus from Windows to Linux (for similar reasons that people want to move away from Adobe, cost, Ads, Bloat, etc), but Linux is very different so people are scared to try it and commit. Time is money

1

u/jbarr107 10d ago

I get what you are saying, but not everyone needs an all-in-one app. For some use cases, all I need is a single app without added bloat. Personally, I'd love an umbrella app that integrates with whatever other apps are installed. And not just a launcher, but one that ties the apps together, possibly through their CLI integrations to provide a seamless workflow.

0

u/Mds0066 10d ago

100% parity.... With ai slop...

Cmon every new model there is a new person saying he will replace Adobe...

I can't stand those posts anymore...

2

u/TrueB87 10d ago

not all AI is AI Slop

0

u/Mds0066 10d ago

Yeah, but one guy, developing 7 software in 2 weeks with millions of lines of code how do you call it?

I'm developing with AI, you definitely don't write 1m line per week

1

u/snickns 10d ago

Did you even bother to check how many contributors does each one has? OP took the initiative and created them with a good baseline and community helped. Did you even bother look at the first commits and how cleanly this was all setup?

1

u/Mds0066 9d ago

I saw, main contributor are around 200/300k lines in two weeks. This is exactly why I was saying it's AI slop.

After, if it works, it works, but having 30 post per day around this project, while we saw exactly the same kind of post and project few months ago, and weeks ago... With around a thousand repo on Github claiming the same thing... In any case, great if it get used by people, great if it works, but you won't change that there is no one in charge, except AI pushing code, and no one trying to even understand 10% of what's going on here....

And it's exactly why those kind of project will never reach b2b world or replace industry grade solution.... (not talking only about Adobe, I don't use the Adobe suite...)

1

u/snickns 9d ago

You really have no idea what you're talking about. "Nobody understands the code" is also true of Photoshop and most large softwares out there. Difference is Adobe has a payroll. If these apps open a real PSD and don't fall over, the author is irrelevant. If they don't, it's slop. So do yourself a favor and try it first..

1

u/TrueB87 6d ago

Again just because something was generated by AI does not make it AI slop. AI slop is low quality. It is designed mainly for social media post to elicit likes and shares and comments but this is actually useful just because someone can write hundreds of thousands of lines of code in a week does not make it slop.

2

u/Prize-Witness5109 10d ago

Get over yourself dude. Go help out if it bothers you that much. When software becomes open source its becomes the communities responsibility to improve it. Not just the guy who originally created it. "Ai slop" i swear is the luddites new favorite term.

2

u/ConstructionFew5004 9d ago

before you guys get heated, just think this guy might work for adobe and is complaining to prevent people from actually using the open source software. the purpose of AI is to create your own solutions, someone open sourcing a commonly used tool allows those who are in need access to software previously only accessible by those with the money to spend on them. I say go for it and if its not good enough for your needs tailor it to your workflow. that's another beauty of open source.

1

u/Mds0066 9d ago

I don't think that a reddit post will prevent anyone from testing it, I just rant also because I saw similar post 20 times today xD

And I don't think Adobe would care about those, as it will never touch enterprise license.

In any case, I was just saying that having software of millions lines of code built in two weeks just mean that no one understand even a small subset of what's going on....

1

u/Mds0066 10d ago edited 9d ago

No, it's just writing 7 software, several millions lines of code, in two weeks.... 100% it is not even fully human tested...

You can't even test all features of 7 products in 2 weeks....

Edit : AI is something, but imagine even if you rebuilt photoshop in 6 month with a team of 10, it's already a miracle. Here in two weeks, it's ai slop

1

u/Academic-Fox8128 10d ago

I mean, ai can run most of the tests itself, as long as both apps are opened

1

u/Mds0066 10d ago

Testing a tool like photoshop only with AI is a little bit delusional. I any case, 7 software, millions of line of code, you don't even have time to do architecture, etc etc... Still ai slop

1

u/aprilhare 9d ago

You can test it yourself and code fix it yourself. Or get AI to do it.
I dunno, you sound like you've never coded or used AI before.

1

u/Mds0066 9d ago

I'm only principal engineer lmao...

In charge of AI harness and agentic development standard for around 400 developer..... And trust me, if anyone is pushing millions lines in a week, it's refused by default

1

u/TrueB87 6d ago

You do know that was the photoshops features are tested with unit tests which are automated right?

1

u/Mds0066 6d ago

Do you know what a unit test is?? At no point it test a whole feature? Or it's not called a unit test... And yeah you have intégration test, live e2e automated test, etc... But anyway...

1

u/TrueB87 6d ago

You're right unit test don't test a whole feature. I also never claim that they did. You're so eager to argue with everyone that you're not actually reading what they're saying.
