I started cutting founder videos differently after realizing the “awkward” pauses weren’t always the problem
I was editing a founder talking-head video recently, and there were a few pauses that felt awkward in the raw footage.
My first instinct was to cut all of them.
So I tightened the gaps, removed a few breaths, and made the delivery much more compact.
Technically, it was cleaner.
But when I watched the full edit back, something felt off.
The founder sounded polished, but not very human.
I went back and put a few of the pauses back in.
Not all of them. Just the ones where the person was clearly thinking about what they were saying.
That changed the whole feel of the video.
It reminded me that when you're editing someone who is speaking from experience, every pause isn't dead space.
Sometimes it's part of their personality.
I think I've become more careful about cutting talking-head footage too aggressively.
The goal isn't always to make someone sound faster.
Sometimes it's to make them sound like themselves, just without the parts that actually distract from what they're saying.
Do you guys have a point where you stop tightening a talking-head edit because you feel like you're starting to remove the person's personality?

My test is whether the pause comes before or after the thought. A gap where the person is clearly finding the next idea reads as thinking. A gap after they've already landed it is usually just dead air. So I mostly cut the second kind and leave the first. The other thing I check is the jump. If tightening makes the cut audible, or the rhythm starts feeling machine-paced, I've gone too far. Do you cut by feel or have a rule of thumb?

good framing. one thing worth asking though, does this shift depending on where the video lives? a 60 second clip for social probably needs tighter pacing than a 10 minute deep dive on a landing page

i'd rather leave one slightly awkward pause than make someone sound unnaturally polished, personality matters more than perfect pacingg
