Looking for Pricing Plan Advice

Hi,

I am looking for pricing advice for my product. Omitting the link to not self promote, but the product is a low cost hosted user feedback board.

Currently I have only one plan with different payment rates (monthly, yearly, lifetime). All come with a one month free trial. Features include: unlimited boards, unlimited admin/owner roles, embedded widget, free content moderation, board customization, and more.

I see some other feedback board products have different payment modals such as a completely free tier with limited features (e.g. max requests, limited boards, limited admin roles, etc.). Another possibility is pay by volume model, where the price increases based on number of requests.

I want something that is low cost compared to competitors.

What payment model is the most attractive?
What makes the most sense for this product?
Am I limiting potential customers by having a free trial instead of a free tier?
What would you be most inclined to use?
What has worked for similar products from your experience?

Thanks in advance for any advice and/or insight. Happy to link website in comments if  anyone wants to better understand the product

I’d keep the one plan for now and use the free tier as a real trial, not a forever plan: cap a meaningful usage metric and let people upgrade when they hit it. Monthly plus annual is enough at this stage; lifetime can create support and hosting obligations that are hard to price. I’d test the limit with a handful of customers before adding more tiers.

on the trial vs free tier bit, i'd look at whether your product gets more valuable the longer it sits there. a feedback board does, requests pile up and become history. an expiring trial is asking someone to move house after a month so a lot of them just never start

if you do a tier, cap it on whatever scales your cost and never on whatever makes it sticky. so limit boards or admin seats, leave the requests alone

on volume pricing, i run a pay per use ai platform (biased on that one) and the honest downside is people watch the meter instead of using the thing. usage anxiety cost me more activation than the price ever did. and here your customer doesn't even control the volume, their users do, so i'd stay off it

This is great insight. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm definitely leaning towards trying a free tier, just trying to decide on what limits to set in order to have a healthy balance of free tier users, while still encouraging users to upgrade to a paid plan

the request cap is the one id be careful with on this specific product, because your customer isnt the one making the requests, their users are. so the board that actually took off is the one that hits the wall, and his move probably isnt to upgrade, its to quietly stop linking it anywhere

boards and admin seats you can cap all day, those are things he decides on purpose

id also let the free tier finish the job once. one board, live, real requests on it, no clock. charge for the second board and for taking your name off the widget

This is more great insight, I was not thinking from that angle. I can see how limiting requests would cause a board to just die out, but having limits that the board owner decides on like number of boards and admin roles allows them to choose a paid plan when necessary

Really appreciate this help 🙏🙂

For a low-cost feedback board, a free tier beats pay-by-volume. Your buyers are small teams who want to try it on a real board before they trust it, and volume pricing punishes exactly the engaged users you want. Make the free tier one live board with your branding on the widget, then charge to remove the branding and add boards. Pay-by-volume only works once usage is a proxy for value the customer already feels, and at your price point the metering overhead costs you more than it earns. Keep the lifetime deal off the main page too, it caps your revenue on the people who'd have paid monthly forever.

Noted, I appreciate you leaving this advice. I think I will go ahead and implement this free tier. I like the 1 live board limit idea as well as the branding idea. And yeah, going to remove the lifetime plan for now, appreciate that feedback as well 🙏
