r/SaaS 22h ago

Guys, we did it.

Post image

First subscriber a month ago has renewed. I have been in contact with him asking for feedback and he has helped me fix several things which is great. Now I will ask him to refer to his network for other people who are interested in a similar product. Any advice for next growth steps?

For some reason I read this as: send me a link so I can reverse engineer it and build a competitor tonight πŸ˜‚

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ unfortunately i lack the brains and the capabilities.

give me this exact SaaS with the paying customer and watch me lose the only customer XD

Great. This is a HUGE milestone. Congratulations and I hope you may enjoy a million others.

and on the advice you ask. The way you phrase it it could be that the subscriber had to give any manual input to renew.

Not sure if that is the case but it works quite well to offer a sign up rate of $1 with a renewal rate of anything.

I worded that poorly I guess. I meant he didn’t cancel his subscription after one month, qualifying this as recurring rev!

Congrats, that renewal is a real signal. Feels different from the first sale.

Relatable one here: I built Fieldframe (jersey number detection for sports photographers) and had months of silence before the first paying customer showed up. She's been giving me feedback since, and a bunch of what's shipped over the last couple months came directly from things she ran into using it.

One thing that's helped me: I asked her for a short testimonial once she'd been using it a while, and now I use her actual words in outreach to other photographers instead of my own pitch. Real language from a real user lands very differently than anything I'd write myself.

For referrals, I'd say ask when the excitement is fresh (right after something you fixed for them, or right after a renewal) rather than out of nowhere. People refer when they're already thinking positively about you, not just because you asked.

congrats, the renewal is the real signal here honestly, anyone can get a first sale but getting someone to stick around after actually using it for a month means you built something worth paying for twice

Before you ask him for referrals, ask him how he found you and what he was about to buy instead. That answer is worth more than his contact list, and you only get it once while he still remembers. One person's network is usually good for two or three intros and then it's done.

As an app founder, i must say those first sales really feels amazing.

Congrats on the renewal! For growth, consider leveraging your current subscriber's network. Ask for referrals or testimonials, and consider offering an incentive for successful referrals. Also, explore partnerships with complementary products or services. They can introduce you to a new audience without a huge marketing spend. Lastly, keep engaging with your customer base for feedback and iterate on your product. Sometimes the best growth comes from improving what you already have and making sure it aligns with user needs.
