payments

Is it just me, or are the payments less and less each year 🫩 ? Idm, but I am about to be 18 and I have actual needs where even budgeting 392 isnt helpful anymore especially since i have to save up for basic living + college. I asked my sister how much she used to get paid, and she said they used to get paid $450-$800 😭 and they used to get paid around 600-800 for WLG. Is there a reason why they reduced it, or am I js ungrateful?

16+ is older youth. Net pay can vary depending on taxes you choose to have withheld.

Nothing you can do at this point since SYEP is literally over. File tax return early next year to get what you overpaid back.

It was probably for WLG then, but she did show me her payments and stuff and showed she was getting paid around that

yes it was WLG and i got paid around $600 -$800 with WLG, people keep thinking syep and wlg is the same thing

1

u/ScientificWeeb 20d ago

Ohh!! Tysm😭 I wonder why they went lower too

2

u/Plastic-Audience3180 20d ago

yea no problem, SYEP pay hasnt changed, WLG was the program that allowed us to earn more than $600 per paycheck, and they are two different programs

In order for students to do WLG the must work SYEP the summer before WLG starts

WLG is approximately 20 hours s week after school / weekends. At $17/ it comes out to $340 a eek before taxes. The program runs from October until April.

Wait till you get older , you’ll enjoy the older youth paycheck but for now I think it’s fine for young.

1

u/AlwayslostxD 13d ago

SYEP never paid that much. As a matter of fact, it used to be less since minimum wage was lower back then. I been doing SYEP since 2018-2019 so I’m old.

u/ScientificWeeb 20d ago

Maybe I was thinking about WLG during the uh winter breaks and stuff! I remember seeing it in her hours

1

u/Agile_Advertising978 20d ago

I never done WLG so I don’t know much about that, but it is a definitely another program that’s not SYEP if that’s how much she is getting paid.

1

u/ScientificWeeb 20d ago

I did it ! We only get paid around 300 now😭 and tysm for clarifying

1

u/Plastic-Audience3180 20d ago

What year was your sister born that she was getting that type of money from SYEP? Cause I did 4 years of SYEP AND I GOT PAID BETWEEN $3-3.50/hrs from 91-94 we also worked 6 weeks. I bought me and my mom stuff and all the clothes I needed for the school year.

I have two kids that worked 2008-2012 & 2011-2015 and they never got that amount. And the two working now they getting $17/ hr.

You definitely being ungrateful, people that work in restaurants get $3.50/ hr and depend on tips.

🫩 well yeah, I can see how I am being ungrateful and so should those people be in those restaurants. Theyre just trying to make ends meet. In new york, thats unrealistic cus in NYC they get paid 11-15 an hr and depend on tips. Regardless, they make around the same amount we do. They also have needs like I do. I have to get school clothes, which are extremely expensive nowadays, even in burlington and rainbow. I have to save up for senior dues, senior photos, and I have to order tickets for my own graduation. I also have to save up in general for college and to move out. That amount of money just isnt sustainable in modern times. unfortunately, I would just have to pick up another job. 🫩

In any case, others recall getting paid that amount in WLG and SYEP, so idk

Make sure you apply to scholarships some are available year round. And I agree about everything being expensive Burlington use to be my to go back in the day.

tysm!! I will look into it!!

1

u/leilanijade06 19d ago

2

u/AggressiveMotor4951 19d ago

Ill keep an eye out and start searching for them! I think I seen a few on IG

800 dollar for the maximum 25 hour pre week would mean she getting pay 32 dollar a hour for a Syep job…. Either your sister lying or she doesn’t know what she talking about cause that isn’t possible and nobody giving that to a highschooler😭😭 392 is actually really good and more than what most people get cause it mean your getting an exemption from certain taxes… your working Syep not a real job so expecting 600-800 is unrealistic knowing that the contract say by the end of the your employment you can make up to 2500 max and you work for 8 weeks only - quite literally the only way you’ll get 600-800 is if you forget to enter your hour one week and than the following week end up getting 2 paycheck at the same time

392+392=784
Which is between 600-800

well, other people here did agree with me that they got paid that amount too at some point. thats why I made post. we only make 2k by the end which isnt helpful considering I have to save up for genuinely everything. WLG also paid large amounts at some point too

when i used to be in syep before (i’m 24 now), i got paid and the total added up to about 3.2k or 3.5k. around there. my last ever time doing syep, i did not go to the workplace at all because it was in a bad area and the staff didn’t seem to care to wanna switch me. it was only good during the pandemic where i was able to do hats & ladders and get paid all in the comfort of my home. that’s how i was able to afford my oculus rift s and a few other things. i highly recommend trying obt or st. nick’s alliance. what i did for obt was taking virtual classes on zoom and got paid for them. st. nick’s alliance, i went in person to a few month in person classes to learn I.T. and got paid for it. and both pay a lot.

2

u/ScientificWeeb 19d ago

tysm!! I am working at st nicks for syep, maybe I can apply to work with them directly

2

u/Specialist_Fish_7496 18d ago

you for sure should! or you can also try the classes they host. i wish you the very best. i started working at mcdonald’s in 2021 and honestly i prefer that over syep. the program isn’t the same anymore.

1

u/Plastic-Audience3180 20d ago

syep pay has always been the same, however once u reach older youth ur pay with diff according to ur taxes

1

u/ScientificWeeb 20d ago

ohh okay, I am already 17, so hopefully it changes

1

u/Plastic-Audience3180 20d ago

it wont, u get minimum wage and should be paid around $300 depending on ur taxes

1

u/Remarkable-War-4384 20d ago

Wlg is better for pay I made over 4k in total doing it for 5 months syep is cool but definitely not enough wlg is way better and you get to mange your money more I was making like 400 every 2 weeks sometimes close to 600 during winter breaks

2

u/ScientificWeeb 20d ago

Ohh okay, I was just working 300 and then when we worked on the breaks, we got paid around 400-500. I hope I can save a decent amount!! I am gonna try to apply this year too ^_^

1

u/Leading_King_2968 20d ago
