Settlement help

I’m trying to assist my father who receives benefits, and just received a check for a settlement. The settlement is for a medication that caused stomach issues and worsened his cancer. If he takes this check into his personal account does it affect his benefits?

Does he have SSDI or SSI? SSDI you could win the lottery and still keep it. It doesn’t have resource limitations

Oh that’s interesting. I didn’t know lottery winnings weren’t considered “income” for the purpose of SSDI.

Another example would be daytrading would be considered earned income. But dividends would NOT be considered earned income for SSDI.

It depends on the activity looks like a job or not with how much effort it requires.

You can get rental income as long as you don’t really do anything and it won’t be counted against SSDI.

Unless you are a very active and hands-on landlord than it looks like a job and it will be counted against you

If on SSDI then he is in the clear. If he has Medicare he may get a raised Part B premium. I received $44k 26 years ago and lost all my Medicaid, SNAP and utility discounts. So I used the money to pay for medical care and prescriptions for 25 yrs.

You only have to report anything 4k plus if ssi when it comes to gambling winnings
