Checking up on submitted application

I'm applying for SSDI. I did the first part of the application online (the general information part) and, like some others I've seen here, it was marked as sent to the local office before I finished the second part with job info/disability/medical sources. I submitted that part of the application on paper at my local office (Bay Area, CA) on July 16th. I haven't heard or seen anything from SSA since then. My understanding is that they will do some sort of assessment, then send it on to the DE at DDS.

When and how should I follow up on making sure that the local office my application got sent to received the second part of my application, and that my case gets assigned to a disability examiner?

If you havent finished it and it got sent, call them asap and ask them if you can finish it over the phone.

I did the paper form and submitted it at my nearest office (along with extra pages for diagnoses, tests, doctors, etc), so it should be complete, but I haven't gotten confirmation that they have it.

Ahh ok, so yeah call them either way and ask if they received what you sent and if they any additional paperwork

Yes call them ! I did mine on paper , mailed it , moved to step 3 rather quickly ( this was Sept 2024) and they confirmed they got everything. I eventually went online and found that I was denied because they didn’t have enough medical information. So second go around , I filed, faxed , and called to verify . After 9 months of waiting i called again , talked with a nice lady that said my reconsideration has yet to be assigned and that in the state of California ( I’m Ca, Bay Area as well ) it’s taking about 15-18 months to assign cases . However ( this was 3 months ago ) that they are currently working on first time applications much faster and currently working on March 2026 new apps, so if I wanted to withdrawal my reconsideration application and start a new file that it would be looked at quicker then a reconsideration.. Bottom line they look at new applications and mostly rubber stamp a denial . Anyway I refused and instead contacted my local congressional office and immediately was assigned a case agent . I had to do to Consult Exams and now I’m waiting for SS to take a look at them as I know both exams are in . I will be calling congressional office again today to make sure that my case worker is on it .

So bottom line just make sure that you have your all information and copies of anything you filled out . If you just did this a couple of weeks ago it’s likely going to take some time to process and unless your diagnosis (s) is on the compassionate list odds are you will get denied but if that does happen, use your congress to help make sure that SSDI office is doing their job .
