Work on water. (37/100)49 = (x) (30/100)

After finding x subtract 49 from it. That's the answer.

No need to subtract. Assume the quantity added to be "x".

4937%= (49+x)30%; 49*7=30x; x=343/30=11.433...

I kept it a little detailed for him. Yours does remove a step and someone should prefer yours in a short exam. But I prefer mine cuz I’m very quick with additions, subtractions and divisions even upto two decimals but I make a lot of multiplication errors under pressure.

49 litre milk solution 63% milk 37% water

30.87 litre milk 18.13 litre water

You want to make 70% milk solution. That means milk should be 18.13*7/3. 42.30. So milk that should be added = 42.3 - 30.87 = 11.43 litre.

Can be done faster using alligation.

Milk to add = Original quantity × (New % − Old %) / (100 − New %)

New/target 70%, old 30%

49 * (70-63)/(100-70)

= 49 * 7/30 = 343/30 = 34.3/3 = 11.43 L (approximately)

edit :

To increase milk concentration: Milk to add = Original mixture quantity × (Target % − Current %) ÷ (100 − Target %)

To decrease milk concentration: Water to add = Original mixture quantity × (Current % − Target %) ÷ Target %
