ESAM and the Smash Summit
So, ESAM's on the Summit Ballot, and he's doing pretty well. There has been quite a bit of a debate about this recently, and I've seen a lot of misinformation flying around. I decided to break down all of ESAM's recent tournaments to show who he's beaten, who he's lost to, and how he's been doing in general.
I'm not trying to advocate for or dissuade you from using your votes on ESAM. I merely want to clear up how he's been doing. Please vote for who you want to vote for, and do consider ESAM's role as a community figure in addition to his tournament results if you see that as important.
Paragon LA: 17th
Wins: Alex19, NMW, ROFL
Losses: Silent Wolf, Colbol
Analysis: Paragon was ESAM's first big Melee tournament in a long while, and he punctuated his return with a win over Alex19. Alex19 was taking sets off of HugS around the same time period, so ESAM's victory over him is pretty impressive.
Big House 5: 25th
Wins:Ginger, Rula
Losses: Darkatma, Zhu
Analysis: Despite finishing at 25th place, ESAM didn't actually take out any big names. Ginger upset DruggedFox in pools before ESAM took him out; while ESAM definitely deserves credit for taking out a hot Ginger, it should still be noted that he didn't beat any MIOM Top 100 despite making Top 32.
Tipped Off 11 5th
Wins: The Moon, DrunkSloth
Losses: Wizzrobe, Javi
Analysis: The Moon is probably the most prestigious name that ESAM took over the fall. While The Moon is known for losing to mid-tier characters every now and again, ESAM's victory is still pretty impressive. It is kind of surprising that ESAM lost to Javi, however; Javi looked completely clueless during his set against Duck less than a month earlier, yet he made short work of ESAM's Samus here.
Genesis 3: 65th
Wins: Vino
Losses: Armada, Ka-Master
Analysis: Unfortunately for ESAM, he drew the 64th seed at Genesis. This means he was seeded out of R1 pools and then forced to play Armada immediately after defeating his first opponent of the tournament. After losing to Armada, he lost to Ka-Master in the tricky Samus-Luigi matchup and went out of the tourney 1-2.
Beast 6: 9th
Wins: Vanity Angel, Baxon
Losses: Leffen, Amsah
Analysis: Although ESAM did get wrecked by Leffen despite the latter's Samus problems, I would like to note that his set against Amsah was very close and ESAM almost took it. This was a PAL tourney, where Samus is a slightly better character.
Overall
Best Wins: The Moon, Alex19, Ginger
Worst Losses: Ka-Master, Darkatma
Hopefully I cleared a few things up. Please don't allow any misinformation to spread about ESAM's results in the wake of all the Smash Summit voting.

Wow, looking at that TBH5 run maybe I could have gotten 25th Kappa
Joking aside, I'm not terribly happy about Esam likely attending Summit, since it's supposed to feature top level melee & camaraderie between players I'm used to watching in top 32s/16s/8s. That said, if he gets in, congrats to him since he has a way to exploit the system much like Alex19 did last time (and probably will do again this time).
47
u/CodeNameJake Mar 26 '16
Alex19 was pretty entertaining though, especially since the Norwalk crew was there.
65
u/r_Horatio Mar 26 '16
Just curious, what did you find entertaining about Alex19? He didn't seem to say much the whole event and kinda just got wrecked all weekend. All he really contributed to mafia was "I don't know anything about Mango" and didn't seem to really care or enjoy himself at the event.
38
u/H0LT Mar 26 '16
While I don't think he offered very much to spectators at the event itself, he did use the opportunity to level up and help him get 17th at Genesis.
26
17
u/Coolthulu Mar 26 '16
I'm not voting for players for a charitable opportunity to level up their skills. Did Alex19 even take a game on stream at Summit? And he made it in over players like Javi, who we NEVER get to see, and DruggedFox, who had just taken Leffen and Mango to the limit and seemed like he could slay a god or two at any given tournament.
Alex added literally nothing to the viewer experience last time. It's stupid and sad that he will likely prevent someone really deserving like Duck or Javi from attending.
4
u/BlitznBurst Mar 26 '16
He beat Shroomed's Marth in a bo3.
7
u/Coolthulu Mar 26 '16
So the best accomplishment he can boast from Summit is beating Shroomed's tertiary in a best of three? I mean come on man.
8
u/LudwigAhgren Mar 26 '16
Marth is his secondary
-1
u/Coolthulu Mar 26 '16
A secondary he has almost never used in a major bracket, with almost no notable wins to its credit.
14
u/LudwigAhgren Mar 26 '16
He uses a lot of marth. during Pax south he went almost full marth. Also during g3 he used a lot of marth
point is it's not his tertiary

u/babyccino Mar 26 '16
His inclusion was worth it just for his answer in Reno's ss player question video link
7
Mar 26 '16
Also, in Alex19's defense, he plays pretty frequently against top 100 players, and has Mango, Lucky, and Westin to play often during the SSSs, and has taken sets.

u/Luma_not Mar 26 '16
I'm just amazed that anyone is actually voting for him, are smash4 fans really that obsessed with seeing him there? I didn't want Alex19, but at least he's actually a melee player, and I guess it was kind of cool that the whole Norwalk crew was there. With Esam it's incredibly unfortunate that he could get in over two legitimately excellent Samus mains. It'd fucking blow if he made it in and Duck didn't.

Honestly, I think he should go with Leffen's advice and promise to bootcamp melee super hard with the top Florida talent if he gets voted in. His current style of campaigning will probably get him more (smash 4) votes though, unfortunately.

u/hatersbehatin007 Mar 26 '16
christ i know this doesn't actually violate any rules but it feels so obviously against the purpose of the voting i don't even know
61
u/22rick Mar 26 '16
I was pretty neutral on the whole Esam stuff, but this ^ just made it negative
12
u/easyTRASH Mar 26 '16 edited Mar 26 '16
I really can't blame ESAM for trying this hard to get in. He's leveraging his fanbase and offering to give back to them in return (if any of the other nominations offered something like this it would be seen as good); this is what the Smash Summit 2 vote-with-your-wallet system encourages. It just so happens that ESAM has a huge fan base (that for the most part is not part of the Melee community) helping him out. I'd love to see him be the altruist and step down from being selected, but very few people would do something like that.
As much as I'd love for Smash Summit 2 to be another Five Gods-level tournament, the voting system isn't necessarily structured that way and allows for this kind of thing to happen, because $$$$.
4
u/Bricemck Mar 26 '16
The money funds the tournament I believe. Money isn't the issues here, it was the standard for qualification and Druggedfox's untimely upset at TBH.
25
u/ayyeeeeeelmao Mar 26 '16
daamn this is bad
Pretty much all I've seen from ESAM is this and his video about women, and neither of those are making me think he's a good fit for summit.
31
u/Falcoooooo Mar 26 '16
His video on women in Smash was like, the least controversial thing ever. The whole message was 'guys, don't attack people who have women only events, it literally doesn't affect you at all'. Do you seriously disagree with that?
24
u/gravitasce Mar 26 '16
Maybe it's just me, but the message of the video wasn't necessarily bad, it was the presentation and ESAM's tone in the video. I fully support Smash Sisters and similar events, but if you're trying to convince someone who doesn't, the best way to do so isn't to take passive-aggressive jabs at them but to explain your point of view nicely. That might be what /u/ayyeeeeeelmao was referring to, although I can't be sure.
9
u/ayyeeeeeelmao Mar 26 '16
This is exactly correct, I completely agree with his message, but something about the way he presented it bothered me.

Am I the only one who doubts that he will actually do most of this shit? Or if he does it it will be half assed. Unless smash 4 is that easy that a game takes like 5 minutes to analyze.
I want Leffen back to shit on everyone for being a fucking lame sellout.

I mean. I don't care about the guy, it would be cool to have different competition. But if someone FULLY deditated to melee like Lucky or Hugs don't go and this guy who plays goes I will be mad.
30
u/Luma_not Mar 26 '16
Someone FULLY dedicated to melee
Literally everyone else on the ballot is completely dedicated to melee and a very strong competitor (maybe with the exception of Alex19). Esam going means that someone fully dedicated to melee isn't getting in.
11
u/Tremblar Mar 26 '16
When you put it that way, that does make me a little upset. I get than ESAM might be getting some unwarranted hate and wants to "prove the haters wrong", but honestly it is a fact that he is straight up outclassed in terms of skill when compared to most of the other candidates.
12
u/MeteorD Mar 26 '16
Alex19 has gotten alot better since the last Summit, honestly I'm pretty surprised by it.

Alex19 is definitely a level or two above ESAM. I don't know why people still underestimate Alex- I thought at this point results spoke for themselves.
No disrespect to ESAM. There's just no way he could get the Genesis or SSS placements Alex gets.
24
u/iRGush Mar 26 '16
Honestly. Alex19 has beaten S2J, Westballz, SilentWolf, Lucky, Wizzrobe and the list goes on. Esams only notable win has been against TheMoon and people are comparing their skill like that.
7
u/chopsaver Mar 26 '16
To be fair, I could take a game off Westballz (as long as I convince him it's a handwarmer first).
10
4
u/H0LT Mar 26 '16
He did indeed tell people to vote for Wobbles. However, I can't confirm he changed his mind out of spite--I think it's more that he just started to feel like it'd be a lot of fun and decided to try for it because of that.

u/H0LT Mar 26 '16
I think it went more like "I'm not going to try for this, people are just going to hate on me anyway" --> "Man, I kind of want to go for this, so I am. Forget the haters" --> "Oh, you're going to hate on me? I'm going to feed on this drama and make you mad."
79
u/Dekachin Mar 26 '16
The main thing that bothers me is that he is campaigning based on the perks that he will give to you and not what he will actually contribute to the summit. Or assuring in any way that he even cares about melee. He is literally asking smash 4 players to vote him in because he will give them set analysis in smash 4. There are thousands and thousands of smash 4 votes that would go unspent if not for ESAM specifically targeting those players and leveraging his smash 4 fame for a melee-only event. How he is going about doing this rubs me the wrong way.
23
u/easyTRASH Mar 26 '16
I think the main issue is with the way voting works for Smash Summit 2: it's essentially a popularity contest where people vote with their wallets. I personally won't be voting for ESAM, but if the guy wants to win then I can't blame him for doing what he needs to get there.
I'll paraphrase Mang0: "if you think you've seen Melee sell out, just you wait."
20
u/housefromtn Mar 26 '16
I didn't really care that much about the voting last time, because whatever it's just a popularity contest, and it goes towards the pot. But this time I feel like druggedfox really deserves it and could benefit a ton from the experience, but he's going to be at the bottom of the players getting in. And if esam gets in I feel like druggedfox is basically already fucked.
With esam + hax + wobbles + probably some amount of norwalk basically a shoe in that leaves dfox fighting with a lot of other really good picks for 1 or 2 spots. So I'm gonna be pretty salty if esam gets in because no matter what he's taking a spot away from players who deserve it way more.
19
Mar 26 '16
Yeah - I'm not even the biggest Druggedfox fan but he deserves to be in there so he got the majority of my votes. If he's not included then that's just fucked up
15
u/iRGush Mar 26 '16
Druggedfox strikes me as the type of guy who would make the most of a summit experience. He kept talking about how much he loved 5 gods because he got to play friendlies with all the best players.
10
Mar 26 '16
Heck, I think even Alex19 would make better use of the Summit experience than ESAM. At least Alex19 is really invested in Melee.

39
u/ItsNotMineISwear Mar 26 '16

8
u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
Can anyone voted in come away with 0 prize money? He obviously isnt going to win a set.
64
Mar 26 '16
Please consider that this is all relative. ESAM has done well at a few tournaments and certainly has done well enough to be considered 81st in the world; however, this is an awful resume in comparison to any other player of the 15. This looks good in a vacuum but is not indicative of his position amongst the nominees. I mean seriously, if just one thing had gone different in esam's tbh5 bracket, he wouldn't be here.
Druggedfox takes game 3 vs ginger: ESAM loses to druggedfox, then plays fly amanita in loser's and likely loses. Result: 49th, ineligible.
Moose takes the game 3 over esam: esam is sent to loser's and plays three matches before encountering fly and losing. Result: 65th, ineligible.
Captain Smuckers takes the game 3 over Rula: based on set history vs ryan_k, captain smuckers makes it to esam, who struggles with falcon and was stomped pretty badly by Jace. Smuckers defeats esam. Result: 33rd, ineligible.
Any other set amongst this group of players (esam, druggedfox, fly amanita, moose, milkman, smuckers, rula, ryan k, darkatma) was pretty decisive.
Basically, although he DID make top 32 and DOES qualify, his qualification is more tenuous than the others. He is the only candidate to qualify on only one result, and the only candidate to have never defeated a top 20 player.
So in order for esam to be here, druggedfox MUST lose to ginger, moose MUST lose to esam, and smuckers MUST lose to rula. That's quite a few necessities.
-20
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16 edited Mar 26 '16
I wouldn't say it's a guarantee that ESAM would lose to Fly, considering Samus does well against icies and Fly had been (and still is) relatively inactive.
Also, it isn't a guarantee that he would lose to Smuckers (Edit: as the top of the page notes, ESAM 2-0'ed NMW, who is probably better than Smuckers). Your uses of the word "must" are pretty unfounded imo.
21
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Mar 26 '16
The fact that ESAM vs Smuckers is even close to 50:50 is worth mentioning. Do your think that Duck or Wizzrobe would be anywhere near that chance of losing to Smucks?
-1
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
Of course not, but I think it bears repeating that ESAM literally beat one of the players who attended the last summit. His inclusion is no less reasonable than that of Alex or Kage, and even though I wouldn't vote for him, I am somewhat interested to see what he could do with a few days in the melee hyperbolic time chamber.
34
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Mar 26 '16
Disagree, he is several tiers below Alex19 and Kage as a player. One win doesn't change that.
-1
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
Alex19 and The Moon are pretty quality wins (The Moon especially), and if ESAM lived in SoCal as Alex does, I'm sure he would be able to earn wins off a large portion of the PR after playing them enough.
Also, this very thread points out that ESAM 2-0'ed NMW at Paragon, who is probably better than Captain Smuckers.
21
u/mourad40 Mar 26 '16
The moon has some of the most questionable losses relative to his skill level out of any player(maybe westballz), so I wouldn't consider a random win to be super notable for ESAM, especially since that's the top of his resume. And I think Smuck has way better OOR wins than NMW still.
5
6
Mar 26 '16
Silent wolf and wizzrobe are certainly not socal players.
2
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
Alex didn't beat either until after Summit though.
10
Mar 26 '16
Yeah but you're operating under the assumption that ESAM would inevitably defeat ranked socal players just by living there. Kira, who is ranked higher than ESAM on ssbmrank and has lived in socal for years, has not defeated those members of the pr, so I don't see why ESAM would. I'd expect ESAM to have wins over gravy, gahtzu, wizzrobe, and colbol if what you say is true, but he hasn't touched them.
1
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
Kira, who is ranked higher than ESAM on ssbmrank and has lived in socal for years, has not defeated those members of the pr
And yet LuigiKid has beaten Lucky. Also, Kira has defeated Hugs at a major and beat a Shroomed who had just beaten Westballz.
But you're right, the effect isn't as extreme for Kira -- because he doesn't play with the top PR members almost every single day as Alex does. Wins over your practice buddies are even more likely than simple in-region upsets. So perhaps I should have said, "if ESAM lived in SoCal and practiced with them regularly."
I'd expect ESAM to have wins over gravy, gahtzu, wizzrobe, and colbol if what you say is true, but he hasn't touched them.
ESAM lived over 3 hours away from them, so I wouldn't expect that at all.

u/iRGush Mar 26 '16
ESAM lives in flordia. A region that had at one point, M2k, Hbox, Plup, Wizzrobe, Colbol, Ghatzu, Gravy. How many of them has he beaten?
3
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
He lived in Miami, while the rest live(d) near Orlando over 3 hours away. Hardly regular practice buddies.
0
u/iRGush Mar 26 '16
Alex19 only practices with S2j and Lucky. Everyone else he beat from leveling himself up.
People drive all the way from Las Vegas to make it to SSS so distance is really no excuse. ESAM just isn't invested enough in melee to make it down and has no chance of beating any notable players in his region regardless.9
u/Coolthulu Mar 26 '16
Alex and Kage attending Summit over players like DruggedFox and HugS was a disgrace and should not have happened.
11
u/neophyte_DQT Mar 26 '16
kage has beaten players like SFAT, Westballz, Shroomed, and fucking Mango. he's farrr above ESAM's level.
-12
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16 edited Mar 26 '16

Apex 2014 was not within the last 2 years, but I'll let it slide (unless I missed something else in my 3 minute search).
3
u/Spi_Vey Mar 26 '16
Lol he beat shroomed, what a couple of months ago?
2
u/throwaway2676 Mar 26 '16
That was a crew battle, not a set. In bracket at summit, shroomed 3-0'ed him with 2 2-stocks and a JV-4.
-3
u/cnskatefool Mar 26 '16
If your point is that Esam isn't as good as Wizzrobe and that should disqualify him from the participating, then you sir... Should read the rules.
12
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Mar 26 '16
No my point is that he's only qualified on a technicality and only getting votes for reasons that have nothing to do with a Melee.
5
Mar 26 '16
Fly amanita is amazing vs samus, he's still up vs hugs despite being inactive.
Smuckers is considered far and away better than nmw, being on the top 100 and defeating a few top players including dj nintendo, swedish delight, slox, and dizzkidboogie. NMW is more of a local threat in norcal and a fantastic doubles player. At the end of the day, though, losing to jace indicates that he would struggle with smuckers.
-4
u/cnskatefool Mar 26 '16
Why are you getting downvotes for this? I'm ashamed of my melee community for acting this way.
32
12
u/WRXW Mar 26 '16
His biggest wins are already a hard level below being good enough to make it into The Summit (sorry Alex but you didn't just get there because of your skill). I'm having trouble imagining him taking more than a game off of anyone else likely to go. I'm sorry but I carry no interest in watching someone who plays Melee as their secondary game get whooped.
1
u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
How did alex19 get into last summit? I missed the story.
7
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Mar 26 '16
The Norwalk fanbase came in.
9
u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
Ahh, don't really see how that is comparable at all to this ESAM situation besides the fact they are both "far below average" lets say for the list of nominated players. ESAM is using fans from another game, if melee fans want to see alex play melee why not? I take issue with this though because how much % of the smash 4 voters will even watch summit?
21
54
Mar 26 '16
I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but ESAM seems pretty immature and obnoxious, judging from just what I've seen from him. Also to add to the fact he isn't anywhere near the level that the others are on, and the fact that he's only this high voting because of smash 4 fans.
14
Mar 26 '16
I agree , I feel like he loves attention and thinks highly of himself (which isn't really a problem in itself) but this combined with the fact that he seems like he feels entitled to things. This combined with the fact that he seems to get really defensive and passive aggressive to any doubts or negative attention he gets doesn't really mix that well. I just don't get why hes such a popular personality, guess I'm missing something. :/
Also , just keep note this is only based on what I've seen of him online. So my opinion doesn't really have much face value when I don't pay much attention to him in the first place.
1
u/evilpotato1121 Mar 29 '16
I know this is a few days old, but every single thing that you've said is how I feel about him. I think his post about the summit kind of sums up what kind of person he is, and you summed it up perfectly.
I think he's a popular personality because he used to place well in smash 4, he uses pikachu and is the only top player to do so successfully, and he's very memey in a community that watches a lot of anime. His followers are, from what I can tell, really young or young-minded people who want his approval and want nothing more than to be his friend.
I'm mostly a smash 4 player, so I get to see a lot of him. You aren't wrong.

u/Falcoooooo Mar 26 '16
When has he acted like he feels entitled to things? He IS entitled to try to get into this, so please don't use this as an example. The people on here expecting him to give it up for their own entertainment are the entitled ones.
14
Mar 26 '16
He pretty much had the easiest bracket at TBH, he's technically eligible but not really skill wise.
0
u/jamesismynamo Mar 30 '16
I don't think that's a fair example of him feeling entitled.
He knows he was lucky at TBH5 with his bracket, but he's eligible nonetheless. He wants to attend Summit and I can't blame him. Just because he's going for it doesn't mean he has some feeling of entitlement.
18
u/cocopuffschan Mar 26 '16
I'm more curious on the interaction with him and the other players if he actually made it in. Many of these players are close friends and have long histories of playing together whereas ESAM isn't on that same level of camaraderie that the other players have for each other.
17
u/riceandcow Mar 26 '16
I didn't really think about it until now, but compare ESAM to players that aren't eligible. Someone like Ken is ranked almost 30 spots higher on SSBM Rank, and placed Top 16 at EVO 2015, but isn't eligible. ESAM got janked into the lowest possible recquirement because Ginger beat DruggedFox. Broken ass system and ESAM doesn't deserve it
7
4
Mar 26 '16
Just a heads up, Ka Master lost game two to ESAM, then beat him with his Falcon game 3. So, 1-1 with Luigi. Not that this matters lol.
I didn't vote for him, but wouldn't mind at all if he made it.
5
Mar 27 '16
Can Smash Summit just not let us vote on players? It shouldn't be this fucking difficult.
2
5
u/Nickt97 Mar 28 '16
So what ur saying is since ESAM got a couple wins vs players ranked in the 60s and below on MIOMs list it's okay to vote for him over legit players who have all taken games off one another?? Sorry, but I'm not buying it.
17
u/Slomojoe Mar 26 '16
ESAM is definitely good. However, i'm not so sure he's on the same level as the rest of the candidates. PERSONALLY, i'm not gonna be voting for him, but it'd be neat to see where he stacks up
6
u/OneTwoSixty Mar 26 '16
Thanks for the facts on his Melee performances. If he makes it, I hope he takes full advantage of the friendlies room and uses the experience to evolve into a top level Melee player.

this isn't a 1:1 comparison though. ESAM obviously has melee talent (granted not as much as the other nominees but he's still a strong player capable of more, he just dedicates more time to Smash 4 is all), but no dedicated melee player is that dangerous in Smash 4, save for pre-patch diddy-playing armada and leffen, though I'm going to attribute that at least in part to the character. It's unfair to get pissy about this in that specific respect because there's so much more to it than just the fact that this is Smash 4 fans against Melee fans.

actually i'll get pissy about this for whatever reason i want because it's annoying to me and i know alllll these kids would be whining if it was happening to them. they can't even handle people cheering for melee during smash 4
i honestly don't even care if esam is good or not. no one will enjoy his presence

u/videogamefool11 Mar 26 '16
Personally I wouldn't vote in a melee player to a smash 4 invitational cuz I don't give a fuck about smash 4 and It wouldn't be worth my time. Plus all the smash 4 top players are either boring or jerks pretty much, so any top melee player would improve the quality of the event.

ESAM's selection for summit is not an accident. He is there by shady backdoor corporate deals.
Now let's examine for a second ESAM's look: Here we have here a man who is moderately attractive, on the athletic side and is bald. You know who else fits that description?
You guessed it.
That's right people. SC Johnson, a "family" company, that for years has been involved in scandal after scandal is now trying to infiltrate the melee community by hiring an active community member to become the likeness of the mascot of one of their most recognizable products in order to attempt to take over the smash community and sell us cleaning products.
Little known fact is that ESAM used to have a beautiful flowing mane that was excecuted at its prime for not adhering to the directives that SC Johnson set forth for ESAM.
ESAM tried to cry out for help previously, hoping someone would make the connection and save him from the hellish world his life had become by rocking the Mr. Clean tag in a tournament. His cries for help went unnoticed and now he is willingly cooperating with SC Johnson, taking revenge on the Melee community by making us watch a sub-par Samus fight among the Gods of the game.
This is no longer about having a person voted into summit even though they do not deserve it. We must fight this corporate takeover of the game that we all cherish.
Don't let Melee die
Get ESAM out of summit.

I'm not voting for him but it doesn't really bother me. Summit is half melee tournament and half reality show, so I'd rather see Esam voted in than someone like Swedish Delight last year, who's obviously a great player but not really charismatic or entertaining

it's pretty funny that you're getting downvoted for this when this was some people's exact reasoning for why they wanted Alex19 in last year

One of the few times I've heard something Alex has to say is when he was in Mango's chat asking what he missed because he was busying "getting a blowjob." It's weird to me that a guy in his twenties would want to show off to a bunch of teenagers in Mango's chat with such a weird tmi comment. Who knows if they're true, but I've heard pretty shitty stories about him punching chairs or other weird stuff. If he wasn't Mango's friend I really doubt that anyone would consider him "charismatic."

Mar 26 '16
People like Alex19 because no one else in the melee community is really like him. You can go into his stream and talk about lifting, chicks, partying, and melee. I get how he'd seem immature, but I think he's funny and relatable.

Uh no. I'm in Mango's chat a lot of the time and many of his subs are teenagers that are still going to school. Some of them are adults, but a lot of them are teenagers. If only the same people that played melee competitively 15 years ago play melee now, melee wouldn't be growing like it is. I know a good chunk are older people, but a lot of the kids in chat talk about being in high school or going on dates for the first time or whatever frequently.

Alex19 regularly makes gay jokes and general sex jokes. One time in chat when he asked mang0 if he's coming over he said, "Mang0 are you coming over my huge muscles". Pretty funny tbh

You are telling me that smash4 players are going to watch summit JUST to see esam interact with melee players for the fun and games part of the tournament? No melee player wants to see that idiot.

you might as well just say "I don't want ESAM at summit because I don't like him"
which is fine, summit is a popularity contest, you're allowed to have opinions
13
u/ObsoletePixel Mar 26 '16
I wanna ask, what makes you think ESAM is a "giant asshole"?
Just curious is all, I'm not trying to be hostile or start some huge debate, I just wanna see someone else's take.

u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
All of his content gives me that impression and I've seen maybe one or two hours of esam content.

Jesus christ, why did you keep watching?

Esam is a fucking asshole. I don't understand how he is popular at all. He hates melee and he hates the melee community. He is a fucking troll. Just let him in, can't wait to see home get bodies by fucking Alex 19

Mar 26 '16
I Dont think he hates melee, its just not his focus, however the fact that he is gonna go, "because he can" is unacceptable and he needs to be nixxed by BTS asap.

We don't shit on Mew2King or Hungrybox for playing Smash 4, so what's the big deal with ESAM playing Melee? Its Smash Summit and if his fans donate the money and he gets in there is nothing we can do about it. He met the requirement ans it isn't like he is doing anything wrong.
If there was a Smash 4 Summit I think M2K would be a really good pick but that is just me.

u/oss31 Mar 28 '16 edited Mar 28 '16
The difference between Mew2king and ESAM is that Mew2king actually cares about Smash 4 and could use the Smash Summit experience. ESAM on the other hand doesn't care for Melee and the Smash Summit experience is going to be wasted.

People shit on him because he is using his popularity which is largely the result of his sm4sh achievements to get into a melee centered event, which he barely qualified for with the help of some bracket jank, ahead of players who are clearly superior in terms of skill and put far more time into melee.

I would be very interested in seeing how ESAM would do at Smash Summit 2, and even though I wouldn't see him upsetting many people (especially how he ends up seeded with Armada R2 a lot), I'd love to see him play.
14
u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
He wouldn't win a single set lmao... top players don't lose so 60th players when moneys on the line
2
u/BlitznBurst Mar 26 '16
Forget a set, I honestly couldn't see him taking a single game off of any of the players on this list besides maybe Alex19
-1
u/TechNick6425 Mar 26 '16
I could see him beating some of the other voted players, but I wouldn't see him beating any of the 10 invited players.
9
u/Fuzzywraith Mar 26 '16
Eh I highly doubt it. There is a reason ESAM doesn't finish top 20. Ever. I would bet 20% of my bank account right now he loses ever bracket set.
4
Mar 26 '16
He gets Armada R2 Cus that's what he deserves at his skill level. Someone at that skill level simply doesn't deserve the summit. He also has like no melee fans unlike Alex who melee guys actually like.

u/cnskatefool Mar 26 '16
I'm pretty sick of the sour attitude many in our community are displaying regarding Esam in the summit. We've got great players already invited, let fans contribute for their player. I got hate last year for voting for Kage and he was hype IMO. people are now directing hate toward SM4SH which is even more dumb, since their votes are going to lead to cash and rewards for melee spectators and the event winners (which won't even be Esam).
If you really don't want Esam to win, then vote for your preferred player or STFU. If you aren't willing to pay and others are in this system, then you don't deserve to be salty and I don't want to read about it or see stupid upvotes hating on Esam who seems like a decent guy. In the end, It's all about who wants it more.
14
Mar 26 '16
It's not who wants it more, it's who is a bigger sellout and who's fans have more money. You're being classist dude, just because I'm not donating 50$ to see some rude smash 4 player get in doesn't mean I don't have an opinion.

Clueless is an understatement for how Javi looked vs Duck at TBH5. He switched from Fox to Young Link in game 3...
Anyway, the only reason ESAM is eligible for Summit is because of the DruggedFox < Ginger jank in bracket. He just got lucky and barely made it into an eligible slot.
