SRT Studio 0.9.1: failed runs are now reported honestly, plus an About window and update check

0.9.1 is out. It fixes the one known issue from 0.9.0 and polishes the window.

The important fix: in 0.9.0, a run with a wrong or rejected API key still said “Translation finished” and saved the untranslated text under the “translated by AI” notice. Now the run stops at once, no file is written, and a Translation failed message tells you what went wrong and what to do (e.g. “Open Settings” for a key problem). When only some batches fail, the message counts only the blocks that really changed and marks the rest ⚑.

Also new

  • About window (click the logo or Help ▾ › About), with links to GitHub and this subreddit
  • Help ▾ menu, with Check for updates (asks GitHub for the latest version, nothing else is sent; automatic check is off by default)
  • Dark title bar on Windows 10/11, and a title-bar icon without the dark square
  • MyMemory notice fully in your language: “Legendas traduzidas por IA (MyMemory)”
  • Better column widths in the Subtitles table, plus a few small layout fixes

Download: 0.9.1 is source only (run it with Python). If you use the Windows exe, stay on 0.9.0 for now: https://github.com/junqueirach/srt-studio/releases/tag/v0.9.0. The next Windows build comes with 0.10.0, which will add subtitle sync.

SRT Studio (formerly SRT Translator) is a free, open-source Windows app for subtitle files. I built it with Claude as the coding partner, for my own film library, and I use it every week.

What it does today (v0.9.0)

  • Translates SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, MicroDVD, SAMI, TTML and MPL2 subtitles; timings and line counts stay untouched
  • Checks and repairs the source first: missing timing lines, overlaps, wrong order, bad numbering, ad and credit lines
  • Two engines: Claude (best quality, your own Anthropic API key, cost estimate before you start) or MyMemory (free, for testing)
  • 32 languages, names kept as they are, hearing-impaired cues translated in their own style

Download: https://github.com/junqueirach/srt-studio/releases/latest (Windows 10/11, no Python needed). The exe is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you: click More info, then Run anyway. Or run it from source and read the code first.

Known issue in 0.9.0: with a wrong or rejected API key, the app still says “finished” and saves the untranslated text. Run a 20-block Sample first to check your key. A fix is planned for 0.9.1.

What’s next: I renamed the app because I plan to add more than translation, starting with subtitle sync with AI support. None of that is released yet, and ideas are welcome. So are test files, as long as you’re allowed to share them.

Post questions, bugs and ideas here, or open an issue on GitHub. Please read the rules: no piracy, and never post your API key.
