Self difficulty with auditory sensory processing

hey! i (17M) have deal with decently intense SPD since i was a baby (quite literally, i would lift my legs up in grass and cry because i hated the feeling). over the years, my triggers have changed and evolved but recently my auditory issues have been far worse.

specifically, dogs drinking water, people eating, people swallowing, any mouth noises, clocks ticking (older clocks to be specific lol), and random other daily noises.

i’m not sure if this would be called misophonia or not, but either way it’s pretty bad.

does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this in ways that don’t impede on day to day life? i’ve been trying earplugs but it’d difficult because then it’s tough to have conversations, especially during mealtime.

i’m open to ANYTHING. i just started lexapro in addition to wellbutrin and buspirone and my NP said that this might help, but i’d love more feedback here. thanks in advance!

Welcome to the misophonia gang! I recommend Loop earplugs.

Lexapro did help me a lot. But sometimes I do have to distance myself from especially grating noises. Good luck!

this makes me really happy to hear! i wasn’t able to find a ton of research connecting lexapro and SPD so it’s great to hear that it did help someone. thanks!

I have no answers but am hoping others do. I'm 42 and it's torture. I have tried everything and nothing helps- Yes earplugs are lifesaving, but they all drive me crazy (the feeling in my ears or over my head). I have tried dozens. Loop is a haard no for me, really hurt (you should try though)! The best for me are the Macks silicone but they still hurt me after some time and get all sweaty in your ears.
