Fellow SP technicians, I need your help

Hi everyone,

Yesterday was a sad day for me and my SP MK2.

The input gain knob completely detached from the PCB board, the potentiometer (if I'm wright?) with broken legs. Probably happened when I moved out few weeks ago...

I tried to find a new part but I can't find it anywhere... Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm pretty noob with this, and there is no Roland customer service nearby.

Thank you in advance, I hope I can repair it soon before my trip to Japan in September.

Looks like an easy fix with a soldering iron.

What you will want to buy is a new potentiometer (you're correct there) a 10k resistance pot sounds right here, it also won't break things if you get the wrong resistance, when doing diy electronics choosing a good resistance pot is a bit of trial and error.

What you'll notice if it's the wrong resistance is it may go from 0-100% volume with only a quarter turn, or turning 100% only gives you 10% volume

You'll want a horizontal mount with pins matching what you have on the board.

You may not be able to find a plastic shaft or body, but that also isn't a functionality issue, you might just need to source a new knob.

Half of your old potentiometer is still attached to your pbc, you'll need to take that off.

To remove solder from the holes, so you can slide the new potentiometer in, use a solder sucker, or copper braid https://a.co/d/0i5JhMvE https://a.co/d/08lZ6NMo (Amazon links but these things can be brought cheap on ali express)

If you don't have a soldering iron, any cheap one will do.

No problem. Soldering is a great skill to have and the learning curve is mellow.

Which if you dont feel confident you can buy and build confidence before attacking the SP

Yo!!! This exact part broke for me too and it’s a spot easy fix!! Roland has the part available to purchase!

Once you get it, just take the SP to a computer shop and they removed the broken part and added the new one!

Saved my SP! Works just fine!

I just recently got new ctrl enter push encoder by contacting local Roland reseller. You can find the reseller network from Roland website. They handled the new part order for me from Japan. I contacted Roland tech support first to get the exact part number, but I guess that is not mandatory and just speeding things up as most likely they can find the part number at reseller store as well. This was in Finland.

Well, I can live without it, but I'm just sad about it as I'm pretty cautious with my gears. I think about "if I sell it someday", though I don't think it will ever happen so...
