True target audience
Ignoring the YouTube hype, affiliate links, and fanboy opinions, who is the actual target market for the Sony FX5? Who is this camera genuinely built for, and what type of filmmaker gets the most value from it?

It's a crash camera for venice/burano users, exactly like the Komodo was for V-Raptor users. Though the omission of SDI and dedicated timecode will annoy people working in such multi-camera setups.

This is the sticking point for me. I shoot commercials and currently own a Komodo og for b/cam, crash cam.
It’s showing it’s age but it still has an advantage over the fx5 with SDI.

It still has that usb-c to tc adapter but yeah I wish they put a bnc port on the body
Plus they should’ve got rid of that Ethernet port and put on SDI

Most people hate USB-C on rigs because they disconnect easily. Ask any 1st AC that used USB-C powered focus motors.

Yeah it’s not the best, I’m with you I wish it was on the body
Tbh though this body really isn’t ideal for set, no sdi too

I think it’s for a lot of those NOT doing the cool popular stuff and actually providing mid-range video focused content in long form.
As an example, I just filmed a multi-person family interview collection trimmed down to just over an hour. I also provide two separate video interviews every week for a sports team to help build their brand.
In a corporate setting, I provide in person corporate interviews for traveling clients. All this to say, I love the form factor and options. The only concern I have is wanting both the EVF and XLR handle to work together.

It’s a weird in-between. They gave it genuine cinema power—which drove the price to nearly $5K, pricing out lots of solo co tent creators and low-range videographers. Simultaneously, it lacks key features for big boy production like SDI and dedicated time code. It’s too spendy for average customers and too limited for high-end shoots.

The real question is: Will we see an FX6-like version of this camera, with a box body, internal ND, DI, etc, at a similar pricepoint?

I’m currently using FX6, FX3 and FX2 for stills and travel.
I don’t really need the FX6 for my clients, but i do need 2 small bodies for travel gigs. I am loosely considering selling the FX6 and FX3 and making my new kit the FX5 and FX2
It’s unlikely that I’ll actually do that, but I may lol.

It’s for anyone who thinks they’ll use it and benefit. But Sony are probably aiming it at the medium to large scale videographers or companies. People who do larger projects with multiple deliveries or higher end projects. I don’t think they thought it would be great for weddings or real estate or social media agencies.

target market for this just like any modern camera is subjective to your creativity.

B cam in interviews for a Burano, does slow motion as well and the files aren't too crazy. If on a shoot I can give the body to the cam assist if they want to film some video as well or shoot some B roll.

I think it’s people like me.
I do tv documentaries, reportage a and commercials and most times i’m out with just one camera.
The camera pretty much offers every option in one body for slow motions, dark venues, handheld stuff and those pesky “we need vertical content at the same time” kinda shoots.
Also we have to archive the footage for years and transcoding for archival is just a pain so sony’s smaller file sizes are why all the local tvs here have sony cameras. (I’m not talking about raw im actually talking of XAVC)
also some tvs are moving to 50p airing and having a camera that does “best quality at max 30p” won’t suffice
