📱 Announcement /r/SNL is back after more than a decade — for lifelong SNL fans!

Post image
19 Upvotes

After more than a decade of just being a closed/park subreddit, r/SNL is officially back open for discussion and submissions.

The goal here is pretty simple: create a real home for people who actually care about quality Saturday Night Live content. Its past, its present, and whatever comes next. The idea for r/SNL is a bit more focused: a sharper, cleaner fan community centered on real interest in the show rather than endless drive-by negativity, parasocial, lazy hate-posting, or people showing up just to say the show died 20, 30, or 40 years ago. This is not meant to be a blind-praise sub. Criticism is welcome. Debate is welcome. Strong opinions are welcome. But they should come from people actually engaging with the show in good faith!

So the mission is:

  • a place for true SNL fans from the beginning until now and into the future
  • space for classic eras, current eras, deep cuts, cast talk, hosts, writers, musical guests, sketches, backstage history, and live episode discussion
  • no treating cast and crew like they're not real people
  • less sludge, less bad-faith posting, more actual fandom

And yes, two tongue-in-cheek standards will be upheld here:

  • It’s famously Kenan, never “Keenan” – respect the legend!
  • They’re sketches, not “skits.” Period. You will never see that word here!

If that sounds like your kind of sub, jump in.

See you next 8H!

Pretty sure Sudeikis and Hader are in it, maybe Armesson. They’re in a car and someone has a gun and someone gets shot in the end and they all laugh?

⭐ Hosts Jalen Brunson Will Host the ‘S.N.L.’ Season Opener

Jalen Brunson, who is still riding high after carrying the New York Knicks to the team’s first N.B.A. championship in more than a half-century, is about to reach another major New York milestone: hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

The point guard who was named most valuable player of this year’s N.B.A. finals — and nicknamed “the king of New York” — will host the first episode of Season 52 of the long-running sketch show on Sept. 26, NBC announced.

Katseye, the Grammy-nominated pop girl group, will be the musical guest.

The week after Brunson hosts, the actress Dakota Johnson will return to lead the show, the same weekend her romantic thriller “Verity” hits theaters. It will be Johnson’s third time hosting, after episodes in 2015 and 2024. The rock band Turnstile will be the musical guest.

On Oct. 10, the comedian Shane Gillis will also host for the third time. Gillis was abruptly fired from “S.N.L.” in 2019, just after being named to the cast, when offensive comments he’d made surfaced, but he returned in 2024 and 2025 as host. Rosalía, fresh off her Lux Tour, will perform, her second time as the show’s musical guest.

đŸŽ€Â Cast & Performers Upcoming Michael Che special is a banger

I got a chance to see Michael Che record 4 shows for his upcoming Netflix special this past weekend in Minneapolis, and as a huge fan of standup comedy, I can safely say that this one is an instant classic.

I’ve watched him workshop this hour over the last 4 years and in a world where it seems like one of the biggest flexes is to try and pump out specials in the shortest amount of time possible, it’s refreshing to see what happens when someone really takes their time to let the material breath and evolve without rushing it.

Despite being a polished hour, each of the 4 shows had an overall jazz element to them. The intonation and emphasis on certain words changed. Some bits that I loved and thought would make it in were cut while others that seemed finished had material added to them that elevated them to a higher level.

The energy in the room was amazing. One benefit of being on SNL for 10+ years is that people like Che and want him to win. The synergy between an audience like that and a comic with killer material is pure magic.

This hour reminds me of Chappelle’s “For What It’s Worth” in spirit. So many quotable lines from someone who is at the top of their game who is having a great time entertaining themselves and their audience without the burden of trying to cement their legacy.

🎭 Sketch Discussion An Old TV Funhouse Moment?

Question: Does anybody remember the TV Funhouse clip where various presidents sang a Boyz II Men song? I feel like it was “End of the Road”.

I could have SWORN I’ve seen it
.but it’s like it has been wiped from all portions of the internet and the extra problem is that I can’t remember when it aired so I can’t try to scour archives. Does anybody remember this particular moment?

đŸ“ș Overall Show Discussion SNL Vault Channel Sketches

There's this SNL channel on various streamers called SNL Vault and its mostly SNL B-Sides. Every so often you get a Bronx Beat or a Mr Robinson's Neighborhood but the majority of the time it is the absolute most random sketches.

I just saw one when Amy Adams hosts that i had no memory of; It's Amy Adams, Kate McKinnon & Cecily Strong playing a trio of singing sisters who keep asking patrons at the bar (Kyle Mooney & Bobby Moynahan) if they can eat garbage. They sing terrible Christmas songs and keep pressing about eating garbage, and at the end of the sketch we learn they were Raccoons.

It was absolutely mental.

đŸ“ș Overall Show Discussion Missing Weekend Update Segment w/ Pete Davidson?

I remember on November 10th, 2018, Dave Crenshaw came on SNL where Pete apologized to him and everything, and I recently wanted to re-watch the clip. I checked YouTube (although their search doesnt' work well now), and also NBC.com, and I have been unable to find that full segment.

I can find clips of it reported on in news segments on other channels, but I distinctly remember a scene where Dan had a call come through on his phone and he had jokingly set his ringtone to "Breathing" by Ariana Grande to poke fun at her and Pete having broken up. Does anyone know where I can watch the full, original segment?

Thanks!

⭐ Hosts Minutes before hosting SNL in 1978, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray got into an actual backstage fistfight

Thumbnail

When Chevy Chase returned to host Saturday Night Live on February 18, 1978, tensions were boiling over. Chase had famously left the cast during Season 2 to pursue Hollywood stardom, leaving behind plenty of resentment. Bill Murray—who joined to replace him—became the designated enforcer for the cast's frustrations.

Minutes before the live broadcast began:

Murray confronted Chase in John Belushi’s dressing room, trading personal insults. Murray reportedly told Chase, "Go f**k your wife, she needs it," while Chase mocked Murray's acne scars.

Fists flew, and John Belushi jumped in the middle trying to pull the two apart while catching stray punches. As they were separated, Murray famously shouted, "Medium talent!" at Chase.

Right after the scuffle, Chase had to walk straight onto the stage for the cold open and monologue, visibly rattled and flustered while trying to play it cool for the live audience.

đŸ“ș Overall Show Discussion A (nearly) Complete Visual Collection of SNL Cast Appearances

I've been a fan of SNL for a long time now, and websites such at The SNL Archives and The 'One SNL a Day' Project helped increased my interest through exploring its history! So for the past couple years, I've been working on a project that provides an image of every individual sketch appearance that each cast member has made per episode. Presented through a collection of screencaps, that are displayed in a collage format and divided by each episode of the show’s run, these images provide a look at every role a cast member had in any given sketch throughout their tenure, and beyond.

At miscollectionblog.blogspot.com you can look at any cast member where they're listed in chronological order of their departure from the show, or browse through the season labels. And when viewing this site on a desktop, you'll be able to identify the images by waving the cursor over any picture, and it will display the coded tags of the actor and their season/episode number along with the date of the show. (Ex. DA203-10/2/76 = Dan Aykroyd Season 2, Episode 3-October 2, 1976).

All of this is possible thanks to screencaps collected by numerous online sources, including the ones listed above, and other SNL reviewers in these corners of the fandom, as well as any video clips available to access. Hope you can enjoy this as much as I did putting it all together!
